"Riven" generally lives up to its billing

I don't think it is necessary for me to wax poetic about the beautifully rendered graphics that appears in "Riven". Those who have seen Myst will expect them, and "Riven" doesn't disappoint. The live action sequences, especially the haunting scenes of natives relatively early in the game, are well done, and serve to draw you into Riven even more than Myst. (It is interesting to see the remarkable progression of the quality of the graphics from "Spelunx" to "Myst" to "Riven") The puzzles in "Riven" are more difficult than in "Myst" largely because they require you to move between the islands (and are reminiscent of those in a similar game, "The Dig"). However, since the puzzles are built along the same principles as in "Myst", those who solved "Myst" should be able to solve these, too.

Engulfed in Wonder

If you are brave enough to buy the game, do the following: buy an answering machine, cancel your appointments, call in sick, lock the door, warm up some tea of coffee, install the game and hang on. Riven's wonder surrounds you in a matter of seconds. The detail, the music and the story keeps you breathless. But have no doubt that puzzles are challenging. If it becomes frustrating, just do this: relax, point and click at everything and look around. There is always another puzzle to solve besides the one you are on. No, don't screen your calls, and don't answer the door. Just get up to freshen your coffee and grab a quick snack. Enjoy this game, don't ask people for hints, because this game is too precious to solve quickly; you wouldn't run through a museum would you?

Don't get hung up on the "minimum" configs...

I'm not more than ten or so hours into it, but I have no problem running this on my clunky, old, slow (once top-of-the-heap) 6100/60 PowerMac. Sure, I wait a few seconds for transitions, but this isn't a game you're rushing through anyway! You're supposed to take your time, and spend it thinking and observing...

Great Sequel

This is a great game. A true test of the new hardware out there. For those without the newest and greatest, UPGRADE. This will be the defacto standard much like Myst before it!!

I've already said it all. But More ? Yes, this is the Game to get your hands and Mouse on next. None before has had the visual presentation of Riven. Even the sound is far better than anything you are likely to have encountered yet. From the very start the intrigue is foremost and doesn't let up with the puzzles. How long does it take to determine the Base 5 system ? Does every lever and button do something cruical ? Come along and find out. I picked up this game and started right away. 4 hours a day and 14 days later I was on my way to safety. You can't have this much fun in front of a T.V. Congrat's to the designers. Simply Amazing

The Most Beautiful Game Ever

I received the game today and I've been playing it for 10 hours, with little breaks for food. I can tell this is the best game I've ever played. With the most beautiful landscapes ever generated by a computer and a very interesting plot (?), this games takes your time and your "other addictions" to another level. You just forget you are in this world and become completely inmersed in the Miller's fantasies. Hope to finish it soon... but with little playing time I can tell you this is a must-buy product. BUY IT NOW... you won't regret.

Words don't describe it.

It's not often that I buy a computer game, much less invest almost $1000 in a computer system so it can run that game. But after seeing myst, I _had_ to see riven. I upgraded video, sound, and downgraded my OS to win95 from linux, just so I could play it. And it was worth it (not to mention I got plenty of puzzle-solving just getting the new sound card, cd drive, etc to all work :-)). Riven is _beautiful_. Amazingly rendered graphics, resolution that makes Myst look shoddy, beautiful and haunting music. Buy the game. You will not regret it. If you have to, upgrade your computer. You will _not_ regret it. This is a game worth putitng up with windows 95 for.

Riven--Something to Experience!

There is one simple reason why Riven requires a high-end machine--Just look at the game! Vast beauty surrounds the user in every frame, not only in the immensely detailed still images, but also in the video, the audio, the soundtrack. This game is so immersive its scary! Hours will pass by unnoticed! And is it worth it? Well, I'm about ten hours into it and I can definitely say "YES!" If you're looking for something to help you escape from the run-amuck-doing-meaningless-things-for-your -clueless-boss world that we live in, this is the most relaxing, entertaining, and beautiful way to do it.

Obsessive....believe me here...and it's a good thing!

I reviewed this game earlier...but changed my email. I was formerly kaz48@juno.com, but I moved, and with it, got a whole new, but utterly delicious view of this world. Before Riven I was a lost soul, wandering this planet with no direction. It has all changed. I am a new person. I have moved out of my old home, and into D'ni. Actually, to put it less dramatically, my parents have been trying to pry my fingers off the computer since I got Riven. Either I have been playing this game or talking to other fans in a chatroom. I finished the game, was so impressed by the ending that I played over and over again. After finishing those, I decided the real world was no match for this one, so I joined a Riven Mailing list, chatted, online role-played...anything that would keep me in this wonderful vision. I made myself a really cool webpage devoted to Riven...I am totally obsessed, brainwashed, whatever, so you shouodn't listen to my review, but I still say you should buy it! The graphics are outstanding...I use them as desktop images, and people can't believe that they are not photos of real places, which they aren't, of course. The sound effects are awesome, I met the guy that did them, and he explained how they were done, but they also were nominated for an award... The music is just as great, I just ordered the soundtrack about 2 minutes ago. There's nothing to complain about the animation, especially some of the little ones no one notices, like rooms rotating and waves breaking. The actors are really good, and I wish that it was possible to be nominated for an oscar if you were in a game, rather than just movies. The actor that played Gehn, John Keston, is especially good. I have been teaching a few of my friends at school to play it, every chance I get, and I play it. The people all watch me and stare and say "What level is that?" and I have to ewxplain that this is not a normal computer game, you don't go through levels, it's a *world*. You have to live Riven...breathe it, speak it, walk it...do Riven every chance you have...before an entire world is lost.

This Game is great!
