Riven was my first computer game...I'm hooked

I purchased Riven when I read an ad for it. The pictures alone intrigued me to the point of wanting to see what it was all about. From the very beginning I wandered what would happen next, and the tram coming across from the another island almost knocked me out of my chair. I remember turning from each scene to see more and more, and experience all the sounds and all the scenery. Of course, never having played a PC game before caused me to have no idea how to even understand what I was up against. Today, four years later I have about 27 adventure games on my shelf and haven't really seen much to compare with Riven. Even when I saw my first 360 degree game I didn't feel as though Riven had let me down for not having that technology. I just enjoy the experience of hunting and visualising that comes with a game like this. There is no-one to kill and no one is trying to kill me so gameplay is much more to my speed. I was such a newby to gaming that when I told someone how difficult play was she said," try the walkthru". I didn't know what that was and of course now the first thing I do with a new game is download one for the more frustrating moments that I know are coming. Thanks to all those who provide them for us. I'm not game savvy enough to figure out a lot of them. Myst was the next game I played when I found out it had a connection to Riven. I have just ordered Myst 3 Exile and will find if it really connects the two worlds.
I want to live there!

I really loved Riven. After playing Myst, I was so excited to get my hands on Riven. The graphics were just as beautiful as Myst. In fact, in Riven, I got a little jumpy at times. There are parts of the game where you know you arent alone. The story line was fantastic and the puzzles also. Adventure gamers, you have got to own this one. Infact...own them both. You wont regret it.
IT'S GOOD QUALITY!

I believe this book expresses itself more fluently, unlike other get-right-to-the-point strategy-guides. I've always liked it's author's writing. Plus, the RIVEN journal gives you a more real prespective. Not of the game itself, but of the island.
A graphically stunning game

There are four thing's about Riven I think make it a good adventure game. 1.) It has great graphics. 2.) It has very realistic sound effect's. 3.) It has a good plot. 4.) It's possible to beat. I had a very fun time beating this game but after it was over I never had the desire to play it again. I had seen and done just about everything in the game. I had got the multipul ending's and searched the entire place for secrets. What I'm trying to say is it's a good game but it has no re-play value.
Just another one of them notes...

Yes, yes, I know I have already reviewed this product twice. I did the second time by accident. I just had to say that Riven is unlike other computer games in that there is virtually no fast action/violence. The fastest thing is probably the maglev ride, which was very fun. Then, the rest is the twisty plot. Pay no attention to any review comparing this game to others, because the style is just so different that it can't be compared. Forget you ever saw this, but take it onto mind. -Kat

The creators of this game must be geniuses to create such a masterpiece. The puzzles, the sound, and the graphics are far superior to anything I have ever seen. It's like playing a movie. I can't wait for Cyan, and Red Orb to come out with another sequel. Hopefully, by that time DVD will already be the standard so that we don't have to keep changing discs. Enjoy! :)

While it's intriguing for a Mac fanatic like myself to watch various Win 3.1 users shake their fists, I found the idea of a 60mhz Mac running this game a nice idea. I agree that this is one of those times where there's no reason to move as quickly as one would have to in _Quake_ or _Duke Nukem_. Cyan's enhanced _Myst_ and its mythos beyond what I had expected, and the puzzles seem to be a little more playful this time around, unlike some of the more stoic ones from before. This game is well worth upgrading (and, if you haven't noticed, the system requirements are much less demanding on a Mac than a Wintel so you could always buy a used Mac...). If a society is judged by its art, then we are in the presence of what our society will be remembered for long after Duke has shot off his last round and you've crashed that flight simulator for the final time.

I have on occassions dabbled with friends copies of various shoot-em-up style games but always left the keyboard unsatisfied. I took the plunge with Riven and purchased my first 'game' for home use, I have owned it for a total of 48 Hours and my wife is already threatening to lock me out of my own study. THIS is the benchmark for all games in the future, kudos is due to the development team for the excellent graphics and more importantly the playability factor which is so often absent from graphically intense games. This is not for the blow em away crowd, it takes careful observation and concise logic to make your way through this world.
Myst was terrific, to be sure. But this is even better.

1. Much less frustrating. Myst required the player to solve a series of very complex puzzles, one after the other, in order to proceed. Riven's universe is at your mouse-tip, for the most part, from the very beginning. And, some of the puzzles in Riven are easier to understand and solve.
2. More amazing. The overlay of photographic images over the art work gives a very realistic look to the completely fantastic. The seamless integration of full-screen video with the still images help you immerse yourself in this weird, wonderful world.
3. More beautiful. Myst had some truly beautiful images, yes. But Riven expands on the base created for Myst -- and animates many of the images, as well.
I'll be enjoying Riven again and again, for a long time to come.

Riven is definitely the sweetest _looking_ game I've ever played - the gameplay itself is smooth, too - the story is rich with characters and plot. I felt the puzzles were solved too easily compared to Myst, but it still took me about 50 solid hours of gaming to finish. A terrific addition to my library. I've decided to move to Riven if it ever comes on the real estate market... ;-). Thanks Rand and Robin.. take a vacation! You've earned it!
