Couldn't End This Game Fast Enough

Doesn't work on XP. Works great in Me. The Islands are beautiful and it was fun to explore them. They are so complex, so many different secret places to find and things to discover, but the hints you need to get the book to capture Gehnn, are so complex I had difficulty figuring things out even with the universal hint system. (Doesn't sound possible does it, it is!) With the set of hints, it took me three weeks of daily play to complete the game and I was so frustrated because I couldn't do it without the hints, I just wanted the game to end. The island system of pipes and steam and animal signs and colored symbols do not follow the laws of common sense. This is a foreign world with a hidden tribe, who you never really meet other than a couple people. They do not speak English and you have to figure out their number system to get combinations to key components of the game. The storyline was difficult to follow and in the end I really didn't even care that Catherine and Atrus were reunited. There were lots of things in the game that never worked, so I spent lots of time trying to solve puzzles which I could never get to do anything and never added to the game play. You can't really do much, other than get into secret passages, until you find and stop all the balls from spinning. Good luck getting to this point. Even capturing Gehnn was no fun, you end up doing it accidentally, sort of, with no sense of accomplishment. Do not save your game once you get to the 233rd whatever place, u must perform certain tasks correctly or the game ends and believe me, you don't want to have to redo a million tedious things to get back into game play. I did play Myst and loved it. I only needed a couple of hints to complete the game. Riven is light years beyond the gameplay in Myst. If Myst frustrated you, I don't not recommend Riven. If you love being tortured, I highly recommend it. I will not purchase Exile based on my experience with Riven. But, hey, who knows, you may love it!

I think the game is VERY HARD. To you young people, unless you are really smart and are great at solving puzzles, this is not a game for you. It took me forever just to figure out what was going on and I even had to buy a cheat book to finish the game. I also thought it was a little boring, just a little bit. So, if you want a game with extremely hard puzzles and slightly boring plot, this is your game.

Being the Myst fan I am, I got Riven the first day of release. I popped it into my CD player, and was greeted by the intro movie - TWICE. Thats right, every movie in the game played twice for me. Although there was a patch released later to fix the game, such a major bug is inexcusible. Bugs aside, the game world was too big. That is usually a good thing, but Riven had far to many screens and movies to make detailed exporation fun. Most of the screens were there to connect the few important screens together. It took about ten minutes for me to travel from one island to the other. Speaking of travel - there are no explorable ages in Riven, only the five island. The few times you do go to another age, your interaction is pretty well limited to walking around a small room. The fun of Myst was unlocking each age and freely exploring it. Each age had its own "theme," and looked different from the other ages and the island of Myst. In Riven, All five islands are rocky and brown. The water looks nice (it actually ripples in Riven), but the unchanging scenery gets old very fast. Lastly Riven is over five CDs. meaning you'll be pressing the eject button quite often. Changing CDs ruins what little "emmersion" there is to be found in Riven.

It goes without saying that the world of Riven is beautiful, all inclusive and fun to walk through. However, this game is based soley on its beauty. If you love walking through beautiful environments while investigating clues to the book of D'ni, then get this. You find clues, but you don't always know what they mean. This game is utterly confusing and can get VERY boring for most people. I bought a guide to help me and I got very far in the game but still didn't know what I was doing. The guide at least helped me to explore more places that I probably would never have seen.
Honestly, if you can get this game cheap -- any of the Myst series games cheap, do so if you wanted to buy it. I mean cheap like under three dollars if possible, because there isn't much to do in the game and you'll probably play a while, put it away and never look at it again. Not for impatient gamers, non gamers and not for anyone with a short attention span. The puzzles are for naught, they are hard, confusing and don't make any sense. The complete 3D world is really what you're paying for. That's why I say if you can find it cheap, buy it because it's really a waste of money otherwise, despite how beautiful it looks and sounds, there's just not much you can do besides walk around and look -- some interactions, and you may get giddy when you solve a few puzzles, but over all it's just for the fantastic visuals and music.

Riven is an ok game. The graphics are ausome! And I like the plot. the sounds were good to. I do not like the ending though, I thought it was lame, and that it ruined the whole game for me, but that's my opinion my freind say "it's one of the coolest endings." The game has puzzles, and there are only a few possible endings. it was so easy I beat the game in less then 2-days, and that was just because some parts of the game took some time, and the puzzles were so lame, and don't think oh, "that's because he used a stradagy guide." but I did not get help from anything, I did everthing using "my 'noggin'" as my grandfather would put it. But my friend here has been playing it for 3 mounths know and he still didn't beet it, and don't think its because he an idiot because he beat some other game in one week that I have been trying to beat for the passed mounth and still didn't. and one thing I really dislike about the game is you have to do exactly there way or no way there is no "alternate way" as my friend puts it. in other words "you can only beat the game one way you can't take other roads to get there you must take theirs", that ones by me. it is a big improvement over its predisessor "myst". also it takes place in a world that seems ancient, and I like futuristic games better. so what I mean is the game has its ups and its downs.
Fun game, but sometimes boring

Most of Riven is pretty interesting, but not all of it. Some parts I find boring. They could improve the graphics a bit and mabye put better music in. There are only some songs I like. Most of the songs sound the same. There is no point to those songs.
Four thumbs up! (I had two hands attached)

This game is great! It's not as good as Myst, but it's still impressive. This games backs right up to Myst, so if you hann't played Myst, you will have NO idea on whats going on! Somthing thats better the Myst, the grapics. I don't know how good they are on PC because I've got the playstation virsion, but the graphics on that are awsome! My opinion on buying it or renting it is you should buy it if you've played and BEATEN Myst. But Bloskbuster donen't carry this game.
Got some time?

While it surpasses Myst is oh say ALL areas you better be a either really smart or bored to figure it all out. However if you need a spoiler there are many to be found on-line. Anyway, lots of islands rather than ages is nice for because as you explore it's neat to see how it is all tied togather. Dont worry, the scenery is quite varied so it wont get monotonous.
