Best Deathmatch Around

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3
Date: December 08, 1999

I've recently played the full version of Quake 3 and am completely impressed. Without question this is the best deathmatch game out there. Unreal Tournament is very good, but Q3 has a much cleaner and efficient networking interface. In short, the games are fast and furious. The graphics are also second to none. With the proper video card (one of the Diamond Viper TNT2 cards) you can see unbeleivable renderings. ID has improved everything about the earlier Quake versions from the user interface to the gameplay to the enemies. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. You won't be disappointed.

Great multiplayer action, poor server management features

There are two things I love about the game: its incredible multiplayer action and its versatility. However, its lack of server management knocks it down a notch in my book.

When played over the LAN with a good machine, the game simply rocks. I play a few coworkers every day at lunch, and the action is always intense. On the downside, if you want to play against bots at all (whether singleplayer or in multiplayer to add more bodies to the game), they tend to cheat... especially at higher levels. I have noticed the occasional lag when players join in over the WAN, even though their ping times are typically low. This may be due to the game, but it may be due to our network as well.

Server adminstration can be a pain. There is little documentation that comes with the game, and this is especially true when it comes to setting up a server. However, if you hunt around the web long enough you will find some useful sites. Nonetheless, I ended up writing my own programs to run the server and to create a web page for player stats.

Last, but not least, the game will only get better with time. ID released a SDK that allows programmers to develop mods (add-ons) to the game. Some are relatively simple, while others change gameplay dramatically. They are great if you get tired of the same-old-quake and want a new challenge (with the same great graphics engine). There are also literally hundreds of user-created levels and player skins.

another great game

I would say that they did it again. Quake 3 is a very fast paced FPS. Seems like that a lot of people are wondering which one is the better game between Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. If I where to make a choice, even though I love both of them I would have to pick UT (Unreal Tournament). Mainly because it has some great Multi-player options you can play with. Both games run great on my system (Celeron 300A @464Mhz w/128 RAM and cheap ol' TNT) I noticed that the retail version of Q3 runs little slower than the demo did, but still the multi-player is still faster than UT. Well if you want a great fast paced FPS then get this game you will not be dissapointed. Unless you can't run it. hehe. The BFG is a great weapon, the power of a rocket launcher at with the speed of the plasma gun. What more do you want? About the bots, the only reason you have had bots run around you and not even fire is because you need to turn the settings of the bots something a little higher than easy.

Frag the world!

An outstanding piece of junk

Quake was awesome, Quake 2 rocked big time, but Quake 3? People, save your money. The game is always Deathmatch or CTF, I first get the game, play about 4 hours a day, it was great! Stunning graphics, but now it's BORING! It gets boring real quickly. You MUST make sure you have 100% OpenGL support, that is a major thing. I just got a new computer, oops! I don't have the GL stuff so I install the GL Setup and it destroys my computer. I wouldn't put this game in my computer to save my own life. Besides the fact that it destroyed my computer, the worst part about the gameplay is that you can die, come back to life, then get killed 0.000001 seconds after you come back to life, don't even know what hit you. Buy Half-Life, it's much better.

Why does it just go purple....anyone?

On my AMD-K6 300 with a 4mb Voodoo card and 64 mb of Ram this game just doesn't run...I've tried everything...updating my Voodoo Drivers..DirectX amd GLSetup...I've checked everywhere...every Readme file and every F.A.Q...they never menrion this problem...My screen just goes purple all the time. On the other hand my Unreal Tournament runs just like a dream.

I've played QuakeIII Arena on my brothers computer (which is btw a slower computer than my own)...and I we were both really surprised by the lack of quality in this title...It all looks so rushed. The surprisingly bad level design was the biggest problem...There isn't a single level in this game that matches the old Q2dm levels...In fact they're much much worse. I was a big fan of Quake2 multiplayer, but I can't bear to look at this...The weapons are also not as fun as in Unreal Tournament (I always felt that the secondary fire was missing) and they sound like pop-guns. The announcer voice is also very irritating.

The Graphics look good and all...that is if you have a ridiculously fast computer and 3D accellerator. Unreal Tournament runs well on my brothers 200 mhz 64mb Ram voodoo2 computer with some details taken away...Quake 3 just doesn't work well on a low end computer like that. I also think that the graphics in Unreal Tournament are much more beautifull and well designed.

All in all this is the biggest flop I've ever seen in the game industry...You people will probably buy it in tons though....but we will all laugh when no-one buys Quake 4.

Buy Unreal Tournament...It's the best game I've ever played...and the assault and domination modes are just fantastic.

...And if anyone knows why my screen just goes purple...please e-mail me.

I have played the Q3Test for a long time until the Q3DemoTest came out and now I have been playing the bots for hours on end. I have alos been playing the Unreal Tournament demo. I think that main difference between the games is the audience they are marketed too. Unreal Tournament seems to be a lot more violent and has some profanity thrown in here and there. The Q3DemoTest seems to be aimed more towards a scaled down deathmatch and I think they both have there pros and cons. I plan to purchase both games eventually because I love them both. The graphics in each are stunning to say the least. They are very comparable. If you like one you are bound to like the other. I recommend Quake III Arena over Unreal Tournament because I like how it puts you in less futuristic settings and more so in castles and such. It has a much more primitive view. Hope that helps.

Quake 3 is the Best Quake Yet!

All the people saying the graphics arent great and requirements too high, probably haven't set their GL setup correctly. After doing that, it ran SUPERBLY on my system. I don't have a monster system, just a Diamond Stealth S354 video and 450AMDK6/2 processor. The game is ADDICTIVE, the graphics are beautiful and I've played hours and hours without one glitch or crash. The computer AI is the most advanced I've seen. If you play on Bring it on level or higher, you'll be fighting for your life against the bots. All in all, the game is the best I've seen for In-Your-Face fragfest / deathmatch games. Buy IT!

Great game for online meyhem

This game is the best game I have ever played but dont try to play it without an up to date system and a 16mb or better video card the graphics are the best and the gameplay is really fast. But online gameplay is much better than play against the bot's. the A.I. is very predictable and the higher the skill level the better the aim and thats all. they will walk past armor. and some weapons. but over all I found it every chellenging. you do get killed alot in short amounts of time. but thats part of the challenge you have to get a good weapon and kill somepeople in the short amount of time you have between deaths. if you can stay alive against 5 or more people for more than 7-8 minutes you are very goo. if you read those articles slamming quake 3 they either have a crap vid card or slow processor

Finally -- Quake gets some GOOD graphics!

When I first saw Quake 2 shortly after its release, I couldn't understand what the big deal was. The graphics just flat out suck. I was assuming they would have some killer 3D. Nope. Even after Unreal came out they didn't spice it up at all. I have Quake 2, but rarely play it. I'm just not impressed.

Enter Quake 3. I am disappointed that it is just a deathmatch game, but John Carmack FINALLY added some GOOD graphics to it. I love the plasma gun. That's always been my favorite. The health packs float and have shading depending on the light, most all weapons are multi-colored, and the game moves fast too.

I have a Pentium II 450 with a Voodoo2 card and was very impressed. The artificial intelligence seems to have gotten much better too. The biggest deal for me was the graphics. I hate when games just use Direct3D. It sucks. 3dfx or a relative of that makes all the difference. If you still don't have one, you are missing out BIG TIME.

If you are into deathmatch AND want a good graphics show, Quake 3 delivers.

It upsets me that it took Carmack well over a year behind Unreal to get decent graphics involved, but at least he finally did it.

Still, if you liked Quake 1 and 2, but haven't picked up 3 yet, you're going to love it.

Very well done with killer AI and graphics!

Great Graphics - No substance

I Couldn't wait for Quake 3. It was at the top of my Christmas list. While having superb graphics, what should have been a novelty bonus feature is the entire game. The single player missions I enjoyed so much in Quake and Quake 2 are gone. All we get are training sessions with predictable bots for the only true fun of fragging others online. I loved scouring each level of earlier Quakes for secrets. Why didn't I.D. hire someone to write a story about these nice looking alien or human or cyborg whatevers with some continuity between these wonderfully rendered alien dungeons? I guess I need another installment of my regular guy becomes hero games (Half Life, Shadowman, etc.) instead of I.D.'s WWF in space hosted by a Chuck Woolery sound alike.
