My thoughts on Q3 vs. UT

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 5 / 6
Date: January 03, 2000
Author: Amazon User

The graphics on Q3 seems to be slightly (reads very, very slightly; asymptotically so) superior than UT, but that is where the positive comparisons for Q3 stops. UT's map is a lot more creative (including such settings as a moving train, underwater base, and an old wooden ship), and the variety of options other than deathmatch (capture the flag, assult, etc.) puts Q3 to shame. Other than the nice upgrade in sound and graphics, Q3 is just same ole.

If you appreciate long lasting playability and can only buy one game in this genre, UT, I submitt, should be your choice.

5 Stars for me, for others.............

So much to say, so little space (and time). Quake3 embodiesthe greatest deathmatch action period. For me, this is the best gamearound. I will give you some pros and cons for this game. First the pros:
1) The graphics engine is top notch. Written by the man himself, John Carmack, it possess the best graphics engine created, up until Carmack creates his new engine. Unreals engine does come close, but I believe the Quake3 engine would win in a "duel of engines." (I just hate the water effects in the Quake3 engine!) 2) The player models are the best. Period. There are models for everyone's tastes: monsters, humans, one-eyed cyborgs, the whole 9 yards. Each one has its own animation and sound. Very cool when "fragging" (killing) someone. The level of detail up close is astonishing. My hat goes off to Paul Steed, the creator of the models in Q3.. 3) The gameplay is the best around. Unlike Unreal Tournament, I feel like I'm in control of the environment. Games for Q3 are designed for less people (around 10) than in Unreal Tournament, in which about 20 or so would work well. It's pretty hard to explain the gameplay, but the best way to put it would be to say, "it just feels right." The control, weapon firing, is much smoother. I also like the stability of Q3 more than in Unreal Tournament. 4) The MOD (modification of the game. To add depth to the game that was not originally added) community for Quake is the best in the business. So many great MODS are being released, with many more to come. MODS like Alliance CTF (www.planetquake.com/alliance) Quake3Fortress (www.q3f.com) and JailBreak (http://www.planetquake.com/modtopten/jailbreak.shtml) just to name a few, are cropping up to make the Quake3 experience that much more enjoyable! The teams spend months adding to Quake3. They add models, sounds, textures, and just about everything to essentially change the game. I am, however, looking forward to more great MODS in the future. (one note: Unreal Tournament has great MODS lined up, but Quake is the clear leader in the MOD community.) 5) The network code is top notch. Players with 56K and...EGAD!... 28K modems will love the new code. Obviously, having a cable modem makes the experience much better, but the game is very playable with dial up connections.
Now for the cons: 1) Gameplay types. With Domination, Assault, and Last Man Standing, UT is the clear winner in the variety category. In a nutshell Q3 offers straight deathmatch, with 4 CTF maps, for kicks. I believe more attention should have been made to CTF. 2) The bots: boy are they bad. I know a lot of time was spent by the Quake team, but it just didn't work. The bots in UT are much better. Try playing capture the flag with these bots. You'll be heading for the Multiplayer arenas in no time. 3) There is no classic style single player in the game. There is a "ladder" match, but I completed that in about 2 hours. Playing this may help beginners, but there is nothing like playing online, with other human players, and ping times in the 200's. As they say, you'll need real life experience.
In conclusion, Q3 is by FAR my favorite game. With great deathmatch and CTF (it could have been better, but hey, it's still fun) and the MOD community hard at work to essentially add to the game, I give this game 5 stars. I do believe Q3 is geared towards avid fans. If you are a beginner, check out Unreal tournament. That too, is a great game. But for me, I will always be a Quake aficionado. To finish the line in the subject area: 5 Stars for me, for others.......... 1 star. END

This game has the greatest graphics, the best rounds, great multiplayer mode, capture the flag, and more! Play against friends on a network or on the internet. This is a gotta-have if you are an untimate gamer. What an improvement on Quake 2. Even though you don't fight any monsters, you can program a ton of enemies. 500 kills to win, cheats are a little less than before, but overall, a great improvement...

(Only drawback is you need a 3D Card with OpenGL Support...Glad I got it)

Quake3-VERY intense!

First of all, enough of this stuff I am hearing about Quake3 being a bad game. That is foolishness.Quake 3 is the most intense, action packed game out there right now-Unreal tournament is very nice, but Quake 3 is hardcore action all the way.I can understand all the people who wanted a `real` single player game with a story, but I think Id has made a bold step toward the future with Quake 3.This game plays very well, the controls are DEAD on,the graphics are well,AMAZING,the sound effects are vvery nice, and it just feels `RIGHT`-you know what that means if you are a gamer.I play Quake 3 over the internet with a 56k modem, and It plays pretty well,a tiny, tiny, bit of laggyness when it gets intense, but I plan to get a cable modem soon, and I suspect it will play the best it can than.[what online game wouldnt?]PLEASE don`t think it sucks with a 56k modem, because it DON`T,I am just a picky gamer. The AI on the bots you can add is excellent on the highest levels you can set the game to.I always get fragged on the hardest level, and I suspect I will not ever totally master it on that level.I almost dropped dead when I realized the computer bots sometimes `camped` around the map!. It runs pretty well on my pc[750mhz athlon 256megs ram,GeForce]but on my friends pc,it also runs well[Pentium3 400,96megs ram,tnt2].I have seen no bugs in the game since I got it,and I have been playing it everyday for at least 4 hours a day-This is very addicting! In the end,If you like these types of games,BUY THIS,It does NOT,repeat,N-O-T suck.If you don`t like these types of games, please try this one,for it is easy to learn for new players. You can trust Mouse64,because I have been playing games for 17 years,[and i`m 22!]and I DO NOT LIE to fellow gamers, and I have a great respect for ALL games.DO NOT MISS OUT! Quake 3:Arena ROCKS! Signed,Mouse64,A.K.A.`CaptainMouse64`-look for me in deathmatch as Mouse64-if you dare..... :]

Quake-III is a great online game, if you have a P-III with a great video card (TNT-2 32mb or better) and a DSL or cable connection. If you don't, you're just a target for the guys who do. If you have a system like this, or you are willing to buy one to play Quake III, then this is the ultimate in FP-Shooter games. If you're looking for an emersive story line, buy the original Unreal, which still stands alone as one of the best in that class. If you want to frag real people, get a high bandwidth connection, a fast CPU, and this game, and start gibbin'. In my opinion, the best thing about this game is the lack of intrusive copy-protection schemes. Unlike Electronic Arts with Need For Speed High Stakes, ID decided to forgo on-disk copy protection for CD-Key based copy protection. This means you can burn a copy and play on your LAN with a friend to give them a demo of the game, but you won't burn it for anyone else, because if your key hits the ID Master Server, you have to get ahold of their tech support go get it fixed. Very clever way of preventing piracy while still being flexible in allowing a legitimate owner of the game to enjoy LAN games without shelling out $ per workstation. While EA actively gouges their customers, ID seems to have taken a more friendly approach to preventing unauthorized copies of their software.

Open GL

This game requires FULL Open GL support. Which means if you want to play it you MUST have a card with either the TNT2 or the GeForce chipset. A voodoo card just won't do. Voodoo cards do not have FULL Open GL support, and therefore will not work with this game. If they do work (lucky), many of the effects in the game will be rendered poorly or not at all (such as the reflective surfaces). To get any true pleasure out of this game you must have one of the chipsets mentioned, otherwise stick with Q2 or UT. Q3A will just seem like a Q2 mod to those of you without the right card.

Save your money -- buy Unreal Tournament instead

I'm a long time id fan, but in this case they're second best to Epic's Unreal Tournament, which has better variety, better levels, more and better game modes, and better Internet play.

I've played Unreal Tournament, Rainbow Six, Quake 3 Arena and Half-Life. Half-Life has the best single player game, that's not in dispute. Unreal Tournament has all the eye candy and colored lighting along with nifty weapons. Rainbow Six has the grave sense of realism one shot, one kill. But for all and out motion and complete absence of pop-up, bezier curves and moving action, Quake 3 is the archetype for everything that follows.

Unreal Tournament is sophomoric, with its obnoxious taunts and zero gravity jumps. Reminds me of how people used to complain about Virtua Fighter jumps before they toned it down in 3. The character models are rigid and identical in size and shape. It simply doesn't have the same freedom in character models. It feels like a shareware game. The multiplayer server is a joke. It takes me about a minute or longer (usually about 4 minutes) to get into a game. With Quake, it's click click, I'm in.

If you've ever been in a multiplayer game of Q3 with 14 different human players running around like chickens with their heads chopped off, you know what the experience is like. Granted, there is not as much of a variety in weapons as one would like, but this is like the classic set that you learn...

If someone is running around with a machine gun, you can pop them a few times with a shotgun to put them down. If someone has a bigger gun then you, you can run, wait, and then grind into them with a gauntlet around the corner. Getting the last frag in a tight match is thrilling. Jumping off platforms down something like 60 feet never felt more real. The difference between Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament is that one obeys the laws of physics and the other loosely follows them.

Smoother, more refined and much more reliable multiplayer...

That's Quake III.

Quake III Arena

Quake III Arena is a first person shooter, Unlike the first two quake games it is a single player deathmatch game with AI players and ofcourse a really good multiplayer deathmatches. Quake3 has the best graphics i have ever seen in a computer game, Environments look breathtaking, Charecters look really great and the multiplayer maps design is excellent. Sure there are very few orginal weapons but the weapon detail is superb, The firing makes us forget we have already tried them before and the way they shine after picking up the quad-damage is really beautifull. The single player gameplay is good enough to tell players who have never experianced an online or lan deathmatch "This is how a multiplayer deathmatches experiance would be", with an excellent single player deathmatch with AI players. But sadely it is not that much fun for players who have played online or lan multiplayer deathmatches. Quake3 has the best multiplayer deathmatch ever, There is not a single dull moment as you keep seeking and destroying your friends or enemies before they get you. Finally a quake game not having a great single player experiance is ok, But i hope Doom 3 has a great single player gameplay and not just a Doom 3 Arena. Quake III Arena is not that disappointing, It has great graphics and an excellent multiplayer deathmatch and that what gamers expect from a quake game.

Quake III - poor successor to Quake 2, Doom, etc

What a waste of money! After enjoying the battles in Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom 2, Quake and Quake 2, I was sure that Quake III would blow them all away. I was tragically wrong. It is just a single person shooter against very boring bots. There is no exploration, no secret places, no interesting critters, no advancing from level to level, no save and no resume. Maybe if you're in to fragging anonymous spotty boys via the Internet it might have some attraction but I'm not so it didn't. It's utterly devoid of imagination. ID software will not get any more of my dollars. Try the demo before you put down real cash for this hollow shell of a so-called game.
