This game has everything it says it does. It's perfectly balanced for pure skill play, already dozens of high-quality mods have been created that give it incredible replay value, and hundreds of user-made levels are floating around the web. The fan base behind this game is incredible. Many have called this game a step backwards. Having played Q2, I can say it's not. It's a step forward, with id having learned how to perfect the game of deathmatch. Beautiful graphics, heart-pumping play, the best netcode for online play out on the market, a tremendous fan base that makes custom levels, etc. The only game I've played for the last four months
Q3A - seriously underrated

I bought Quake 3 Arena about a week ago and I have played it every day since. The graphics are truly outstanding and game play is riveting.
Unreal Tournament, the major competitor of Q3A, doesn't hold up to Q3A. This is my opinion, but I can understand how others might feel a different way. I think that Q3A has a lot more room to grow then Unreal Tournament.
Unreal Tournament's bots do have a better AI then Q3A, but I barely miss it. Sure Q3A's bots don't act exactly human, but they are still challenging and fun. My other complaint about Q3A, is that it is a little to easy to be fragged. So you respawn and go back at it... W/ UT I spend a lot of time collecting items before jumping into the fray. With Q3A there is no time to wait.
I wish I was playing now.

Quake 3 Arena focuses on the multiplayer experience-- especially death matches-- to the exclusion of everything else. There are no missions or puzzles. It's just arenas, weapons, and shoot-em-up action. The robots are just there to let you practice for playing against human opponents.
Quake 3 Arena puts a much greater emphasis on combat skills, rather than on controlling a level by hording armor and items. The pace of the game is greatly accelerated as a result. The game is well-balanced in that even a player with full armor and mega-health remains potentially vulnerable to a well-executed attack. The game "feels" extremely smooth during play-- more so than Unreal-- and the level of graphical detail is just astonishing. This is one beautiful game.
In short, if you prefer human oppontents, and you love deathmatch, then Quake 3 Arena was made for you.
System Requirements are misleading

Prior to buying this game I spent a considerable amount of time ensuring that the system it was to be loaded on would meet or exceed the requirements as stated by the manufacturer. The system, a PII 400, 128Mb, Matrox G200, NT4.0 does. The game will not run. Activision confirmed that the game will not run with a G200 and NT. If you're considering buying the game you might want to check with the manufacturer to ensure you're configuration will work.

What a disappointment. I've had this game for about two weeks, and have already grown tired of it. I can't even play it anymore. Sure, the graphics are very sweet, but the gameplay is extremely lame. If you have Quake II, then you already have Quake III, just without the great graphics. Go get Half-Life.

This is an incredible, beautiful game. I have also played Unreal Tournament, and I'm going to compare the two. But the final result is this: overall, Quake 3 is better. Quake 3 has many strong points: weapon balance is extraordinary, map design is inspired, and the skins and bots are jaw-dropping. Q3A has over 20 skins to choose from, and many bots for you to fight. The bots in Q3A put UT's bots to shame. They are much (emphasis on much) more distinctive, they have things that they say in the chat box that are unique to each one, and each one has tactics it uses! Unlike Unreal, where the level of skill just determines how well the bot can frag, in Quake each bot has tactics it uses. For example, the highest level bot, Xaero, is the master of the railgun and will shoot you out of the air. However, the bots are not perfect, and they miss, making them sometimes seem very human. Next, the graphics are unbelievable. They set a new level - the effects, animation, curved surfaces - it's awesome. Two place where Q3A falters slightly: one is map design. Now in how the maps are set up; that part of the map design is flawless. However, they are all either alien castles or platforms floating in space. A couple are a little different (such as a futuristic space outpost) but more variety, as seen in Unreal, would have been nice. Also, Unreal has more modes, such as domination and assault. But Q3A's deathmatch and team deathmatch are so incredibly fun you won't care. As for the heart of the game, the multiplayer - it's spectacular. I have a cable modem so I don't represent the majority, but I've heard that play is incredibly smooth with 56k. I experienced NO lag at all, Unreal had a little (very little though). Multiplayer deathmatch is flawless - the purest deathmatch experience there is. It blows UT out of the water. The other modes work very well too. Quake's system requirements are not terrible, but they are slightly more than Unreal. Mostly you must have a Glide 3D card. They're not too bad though, most people will be able to run this game very well. Bottom line: buy Quake 3. I also reviewed UT and made it sound better than Quake 3, but that was when I'd just played the demo and wasn't able to appreciate the game. Sorry. Unreal is a very nice game, don't get me wrong. But Quake 3 is king.

Wow look at the pretty engine. THere I have said everyhting good about this. I swear progreammers are more interested in pretty than contenet. I would rather play Doom than this. Quake3 is all glitz and no depth. Where is the story? Where? It left with Romero when he went to form IonStorm
Why compare to Unreal Tournament?

It is no comparison. Quake 3 is about 10x better than Unreal. When I play Quake I feel like I am "in" the game. When I play Unreal I feel like I am simply watching. It is almost laughable when you hear the comments made between the characters on Unreal. Unreal is a disney land version of Quake.
The sad part is that I almost bought Unreal without trying it first becasue of all the great reviews. I am soo glad I tried it first before I wasted the money. Quake 3 is the better game hands down and is no comparison with Unreal.
Maybe next time...

Quake3Arena looks fabulous, but I think (for the first time) id missed the boat. The game is an incredible delight to the eye, but gameplay has not been enhanced dramatically. Being a loyal id fan since the days of Doom, I rushed out the day this was released and have only played a coulpe times since then. I find the levels grow tiresome after a very short while. Of most significance, some of the weapons have lost their finesse. The new BFG was quite a disappointment. The bot UI also seemed quite hyped. I have had bots run around me and not even fire. However, with a fast machine and a nice video card, the graphics are visually stunning.
Better than UT, and it DOES have team play

CTF is most certainly available as a play option in Quake 3, and since the Quake series is the most heavily modified series of games in computer game history, it won't be long until you see more teamplay mods. It strikes me as odd that people are comparing Quake 3 against Half-Life TFC, and Unreal Tournament - TFC is a MOD (Quake 3 hasn't had a chance to be modded yet) and Unreal Tournament is just Quake with different weapons models, less fun, and less background.
In my opinion (after all, that's what these are) Q3 beats UT hands down. Better weapons models (stick with what works), better accuracy in bullet modeling, better environment and atmosphere, better player support, faster engine, faster network code, etc. And the argument about the bots - Q3's bots are as skilled as, if not more skilled than, UT's bots. I'll readily agree that it's pretty stupid for the Q3 bots to type insults, but it's a hell of a lot less aggravating than hearing the ever-witty "Loser!" and "You suck!" forty million times.
