A must have for all matrix enthusiasts

i must say i was a little doubtful after hearing all the praise this game got from the second disk of the Matrix Reloaded DVD, but after i jacked in and fought an enemy hand to hand for the first time, i was definately hooked. The moves are amazing, with very little practice i was throwing enemies, choking them from behind, and doing sweet kicks with Ghost. I thought this was the best game ever, and then i shot someone in bullet time, the game just got that much better! Other users will have you believe that this game is dificult to run or lags on very good graphics cards but i'm sorry to say its not the game's fault my friends, its yours. You may have a top-of-the-line video card but your pc must be lacking. My graphics are amazing and all i'm running is a 64mb GeForce 2. And they say the environments are blah, well shouldnt a sewer be boring?

I must say I was the most disappointed with the driving part of the game but it is a very small part of the game so i'll let it slide. The hacking option is very exciting, dont let that trace program get ya!! Sparing with Trinity was a lotta fun, too. Overall, all you matrix fans must play this game, or you'll miss out. Good game.

Completely Awful. Even for a Matrix Fan.

This game could have been a mediocre Max Payne ripoff and I would have loved it. But no. This is just one game in a continuing trend where the top priority is ease of portability between PC and console platforms. But you can't just recompile and hope for the best... playcontrol, font aliasing, video rendering all are different on the PC.

But why bother when you've got such a hot commodity as The Matrix? All you need is a name and you can start selling hot steaming piles of CD-ROMs and it'll sellsellsell. The play control works just like the console... which is bad. You run at top speed through everything, just hit random buttons and hope that some good combo comes out of it. I'd like to say I got to try the whole "focus" thing, but whenever I'd hit the focus key the video would keep switching to my desktop every other frame!

And I'm not an amateur PC user. I've got a stock Athlon/GeForce3/WinXP system that's been running great through all my other titles. But the graphics had completely terrible bugs, the models were completely lacking in polys, the levels were altogether pretty drab, and don't even get me started on the little green "typeface" that pops out of people when you shoot them.

Yes, I installed the latest patch. And yes, latest video drivers and DirectX. Doesn't help. Still looks/plays awful.

So basically I just bought a ...CD full of AVI's with film plot. At least they were nice enough just to plunk Divx files right on my drive, so things aren't a total loss. The video: neat. The game: absolutely horrible.

May have to hack your way into installing it

The install was very glitchy. It got though to the final disc and then asked for the first one again. When I put it in, the whole install crashed and it erased 3 CD's worth of installation. I finally got past this by pressing continue while on the final ("play") disc install the first time it asked for volume 1 and then responding normally when it asked again at the very end of the install (green bar maxed out). The support website suggests trying to just copy all the discs to your hard drive and installing from there. A DVD version of the game might work better too. Then I had to patch my video and sound cards plus the game. Got a blank screen... then tried switching the game resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 to match my desktop and it finally worked! Gameplay was okay.. my favorite parts were the videos and the focus fighting (bullet-time) while the driving parts sucked. Still, it was nice to get some extra details of the Matrix story from the game.

Excellent ideas. Mediocre implementation.

The story rocks: these are the highest quality human actor cut scenes in any game so far. The battle system is excellent: there are tons of different moves that you can manifest through different positioning and button combinations. The problem: technology. They haven't paid enough attention graphics, optimization, and control.

In-game, the graphics are sub-par ate best. This problem has less to do with the engine than it does with design. The levels, models, and textures just aren't that creative. In fact, everything but the well-crafted main character models is pretty flat and unoriginal.

They don't seem to have worried much about optimization. I'm running the game at 800x600 (GeForce Ti4200) and lagging when I have to fight more than 4 enemies. I've ran games with phenomenally better graphics (Enclave, Splinter Cell) at full speed with no sluggishness on 1600x1200 resolution.

I admire the rich battle system, but it is the only aspect of the game with solid controls. Movement in general is horrible; it feels like I'm running on fly-paper. Forget about any skillful dodging or even maneuvering if you aren't in Focus mode. Don't even get me started on the driving gameplay. After playing through the incredible hand-to-hand combat, entering the driving levels left me speechless. They have all the quality of a shareware Driver clone (and a bad one at that).

I don't think my review would have been so harsh if the game didn't bear the heavy namesake and had not been developed by Shiny, a development team who I know is capable of creating technologically solid games. My guess is that the quality suffered because of the rush release. I hope they release a patch.

The redeeming factors of this game are the story and the Focus mode battle system. It's worth playing. Just get out the Tylenol when you have to drive or do any non-Focus maneuvering.

A note on stealing ideas: yes, Max Payne was the first video game to incorporate bullet-time gameplay, but where did Max Payne's developers get the idea? From the original Matrix.

Pretty good, yet disappointing...

I mainly bought this game for the hour of FMV footage, but I also expected it to be delivered in a neat package with good gameplay. But with the poor controls, an annoying camera, and countless bugs and errors, it's making it hard to love this game when I really wanted to. The FMV cutscenes are top-notch, and so are the in-game cutscenes. But any time the game is interactive it can be very frustrating.

However, the game is not completely bad... It is fun and annoying at the same time. The only fuel you have for completing the game is being able to watch that hour of extra footage filmed for the game. This game was obviously rushed for the May 15th release date, which is sad because it had so much potential. I would assume this game had a very large budget, but I'm not completely sure as I saw quite a few "cut corners". For example, in the FMV's when they pick up a phone to exit the Matrix, the lights are dimmed as they are transported to avoid paying John Gaeta for that simple animation. I also noticed the Powerade and Pentium 4 ads that were "subliminally" placed throughout the game. In any case, this definately proves that budget will not make or break a game.

The only reason I'd recomend this game is for the filmed continuity of the Matrix sequels.

pc version for only the most powerful gaming pcs

The first thing I noticed is that the process to load the game took a very long time. I have a very fast computer and it was a process that took about 15 to 20 minutes to load. I have installed operating systems in the same amount of time. That aside, the gameplay leaves something to be desired. The PC has never been a great action/adventure gaming platform and this again proves why. The controls for moving the character and performing manuevers while fighting and shooting are a little awkward but the default keys can be changed. It simply comes down to the fact that playing the game will feel a lot better with a gamepad. Many moves require that you hold several keys down at a time and that can become a problem with a keyboard and mouse. While that will not deter hardcore PC gamers, I would suggest going with a console version if you are a casual gamer. When it comes to the graphics I am sure they look fantastic on the lastest 9800 from ATI or 5900 from nVidia, the game runs DirectX 9.0 and if you have anything less than a card that supports this natively I would stay away. I have a ATI 9000 and had problems with the graphics. The speed is not an issue, but there seems to be a problem with shaders and ray tracing when you draw your guns at times as well as other atmospheric effects gone awry. All in all it seems like a decent game, but its performance on the PC was not as good as hoped. If you want some Matrix action you probably would be better off getting a console version, but if you are a hardcore Matrix fan with bleeding edge hardware you can probably afford to by more than one version.
P.S.: This version has a feature that lets you hack the Matrix with a cool command-line interface.

Just not very good

I love action games and the Matrix, so I was really looking forward to this game. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. From the very first time I watched Ghost flail his arms when he ran, I knew this game just wasn't going to cut it. In the attempt to make a workable control system, Shiny has made something that doesn't respond fluidly. Instead, the focus jumps between targets, jerking the viewpoint around and making navigation difficult. Additionally, the game is way too under-challenging. I'm no expert player, but all you have to do is sit still for a few seconds and your health just magically refills. It really sucks the challenge out of the game. Maybe a few patches down the road things will be better, but things are still way too rough at version 1.52

When I bought this game, I had some money to get rid of, so I figured, what the heck, I'll buy it. After I played it for an hour, it was the most fun I have had playing a game in a long time. Enter The Matrix turned into the best 10 hours I have spent playing on the computer. The graphics are glitchy in some of the cutscenes, but the in-game is very nice(especially textures.) The only bad thing I have to say about this game is that the fighting scenes are pretty much automated. All you need to do is click away, and suddenly you are a kung-fu master. The best part is the intricate gameplay, and the hacking program. It allows you to pretend you are in the matrix, and hack cheats out of it. Also has very good replay value. Overall, go spend 50 bucks on this game, cause it is definately worth it!

solid, not awe-inspiring

First, it's obvious that a great deal of hard work and a significant amount of technology went into EtM. As a software developer I have unbounded respect for a team that can pull off anything close to the complexity of something like this. Hats off to the Enter the Matrix developers, artists and support folks.

That said, there were more than a few aspects of this game that made it a 3- rather than a 5-star experience.

Pros:

I liked the intertwined manner in which the two characters' routes was handled. Replaying some scenarios as the alternate character and seeing other new scenarios for the first time was enjoyable and entertaining.

The game is extremely true to the movie, so if you liked the film, you'll also like the game's story content. While I don't think the movie is `incomplete' without playing the game (more on this below), it adds a nice dimension to the Ghost and, to a lesser extent, Niobe characters.

The levels/maps of the game are fun and visually appealing (but suffer for other reasons - see below).

The Hacking stuff was entertaining, but probably only for someone already familiar with DOS-based computers. It would have been nice if the training, image and fmv stuff worked when invoked, however.

Cons:

Compared to the original The Matrix, Matrix Reloaded is lacking in story, creativity and originality. Considering that these guys gave us stuff like Bullet Time and other great effects that were integral to the story, the sequel by comparison is pretty lame - especially looking at how long it took to produce and how much it has all cost.

The game suffers along with the film in this regard. For instance, as some of the action scenes in the film are relatively pointless, so are most of those in the game - they're just things that get us from Points A to B. This is frustrating (in both film and game) - when the only thing at stake is `moving on', as opposed to achieving some critical goal, the repetition needed to get past a given point quickly becomes annoying.

The game's visual appeal suffers because moving through the levels - especially in the car chase scenarios - precludes appreciating the art that went into them. One simply has to move too fast and frantically to enjoy the scenery.

Personally, I hate it when a game moves the point-of-view (`camera') arbitrarily. I know this is necessary to some degree in some game engines, but in most of the fighting scenes this is annoying and disorienting, as the relative motion control of the keys changes along with it. This was the most frustrating aspect of the game, and prevents full enjoyment of the many different hand-to-hand actions, IMHO.

While playing as Niobe, a number of the cutscenes' sound was muted.

The final scenarios flying / shooting through the catacombs were wayyy too long, completely disappointing, and reminded me of cheap, sprite-based games from the 80s. The short UFO chase scenario in The Journeyman Project was more enjoyable, as there was ultimately a point to it.

The game (or perhaps it's the W Bros.) takes itself a little too seriously, and the notion that the movie is somehow `incomplete' without playing the game is pure, unadulterated marketing hype (i.e., B.S.), and the Wachowski's should be ashamed of making such a claim.

I guess the most disappointing thing about EtM was that I'm really not inspired to go back and play it over again, as I have been with games like Unreal Tournament, Max Payne and especially Medal of Honor: Allied Assault / Spearhead.

Overall, it was a solid game, just not awe-inspiring.

Disgusting, just disgusting!
