There is little doubt that this is going to be one of the top games of 2003. The December 2002 Game Informer Magazine gave this a full-length feature, and it left little doubt that this is going to be a powerhouse game. Enter the Matrix is being developed with a close collaborative effort between gaming industry and Hollywood so that they can create a game experience "as rewarding as the movie."

There will be ultra-realistic character movements with the over 4,000 motion captures performed and encoded into the game. We are promised over 200 minutes of in-game cinematics and voices from the actors of the film including Keanu Reeves (bless his heart). You can play as Niobe or Ghost, and you play along side characters from the first movie (Neo and Morpeus). Screen shots look promising with plenty of special effects. Unless the something goes terribly wrong between now and the release of this game, we can expect ONE AWESOME GAME!

This is a section for RE-views. RE as in past tense, meaning you have played the game. How can you review something that wasn't even for sale on the day you wrote your "review". I'd even give you leway had you played the demo but, don't review and put up 5 stars on what is coming.

As much fun as watching the movie

All though I had some difficulty with it at first since I kept trying to do "bullet time" moves from Max Payne, I got the hang of it quickly. The game is alot of fun and is very fast paced if you are aggressive. On easy you can button mash and make it through 75% of the levels. It's a different story on the harder settings. If you don't know all the moves and techniques you're going to have problems.

The story and the ability to suck you into it is where this game truly shines above just about any other game I've ever seen. Only for brief moments are you ever not in the middle of the action. Each "level" is a scene in the story rather than the standard levels that you finish and then leave. In a couple cases though it feels like a weird Matrix episode of Scoobe Doo ( You know when the kids and the monster run back and forth through a series of doors over and over again.) as you run and gun through some areas two and three times being chased by the authorities.

My only complaint is that this game is a counsel game and not a PC game. It has been ported to the PC, and it feels that way. This leads to some annoyance when it comes to shooting/sniping and camera angle. Do not expect Max Payne FPS style shooting/3d person view, it's all auto-aim and auto follow. Though how many times in Max Payne could you kick off a wall and lay out two or three bad guys with a flying round house kick while gunning down two or three more, then run up a wall and do a backflip to safety all without skipping a beat. You'll get the hange of it very quickly.

I'm going to nit-pic the graphics a bit as well. The maps leave something to desire. Nothing fancy, nothing ground breaking, sometimes very basic. In the end this has little to do with the fun factor. People always say they'd rather have game play over eye-candy. Well Enter the Matrix has it by the truck load. It manages to emulate the action of the movies as good as one could hope in a video game. It is this combined with a "never let you rest and catch your breath" story line that makes it a blast to play.

Would I buy it again, of course. If you don't and you're a big fan of the Matrix then you are missing out on the fun.

Almost forgot. There is also the "Hacking" portion of the game which I haven't really figured out yet. Think "green screen DOS" action. Looks interesting.

you don't know what you are talking about

this game is the best I ever played. its really easy to move because its like this: a= strafe left, s=back or down, d= strafe right, w=forward or up. check your keyboard its like they moved the arrow keys onto where the letters are and the view is controlled with the mouse. shift key is focus and space is jump. you play with the a s w d keys as if they are the arrow and the pinky on the shift for focus and thumb on the space for jump its so simple!!!!! you can do a lot of moves in a veriety of cases aginst many opponents and the weapons are realistic. its not too easy because in normal and hard it gets hard to beat the game. on top of all you get the story which tells you why stuff happened on "reloaded" like they did. I'm not a hardcore matrix fan but even after you beat the game both with ghost and neobe its fun to play again in easy mode. Buy it.

One of the greatest games ever.

I played the game at a friends house for a good couple of hours. One word to describe it: AMAZING! The possibility of moves and attacks is amazing, once you get used to the controls you can do just about everything you see in the movie (and more!). I'm going off to buy it soon (i can't wait for the shipping time to play!!!). My only worry is that the game becomes monotonous later on...

Mad cool It had all action. Better than vice city

"You get tasks but you dont know why" - and have you watched ANIMATRX ? In "Final Flight of osiris" theres an explanation why you retrive video tape. The rest is in Matrix: Reloaded ...
Graphic is great, but you have to choose best performance ... Controlls are a bit strange, but after a while (about 30 minutes for me) theyre great, ad now i couldnt imagine them to be different. Oh, and music is awesome ... :) A definitive MUST BUY for all who wants to go deeper into Matris storyline ...
PS
"Hack" mode is a great idea ... :)

From a Matrix fan--WOW!!!

I debated whether to watch the movie or play the game first. As it turned out, I saw the movie first, so when I started playing the game, I knew who some of the characters were. Now I'm onto the second level, and I've already been in one of the scenes from the movie. This is one deep rabbit hole. So lets break this down.

--Graphics--

Though I have seen better, and high resolutions the graphics engine is very sharp. Most scenery is deformable, especially tiled columns. Very sweet. In Bullet-Time, things get a little grainy, but it works out well. The bullet trails are extremely similar to the movies. On lower resolutions, I don't think the game would look so great, so if you are hanging around the recommended specs for the game, might want to upgrade before getting it.

--Sound/Music/Voice--

Due to the tightly interwoven development of "Enter the Matrix" and "Matrix: Reloaded" the voice acting is top notch. All the big screen characters portrayed in the game have their dialog done by the corresponding actors, not cheap stand in voice actors. All of the sound effects are taken directly from the movie SFx. The music is also well done, fitting so well into the gameplay that you almost miss it, until you realize that the fast-paced score is making your heart beat that much faster. Very well done in my book.

--Gameplay--

Here's where it gets a little sticky, and where a number of gamers will be a bit turned off. The controls are pretty standard for normal gameplay, and most of the action takes place in a 3rd person over the shoulder view. You are able to switch to a first person view if you want to or have to at certain points of the game. There are lots of weapons to choose from, in addition to having a martial arts option to combat. You can even mix the two if you choose. There are also an impressive number of special moves, many utilizing Bullet-Time, that can be used for both hand-to-hand and ranged fighting.

There are also parts where you will either drive a car or other vehicle, or ride "shotgun" and take out any enemies that try to get in your way. These parts can be a bit tricky, as the controls may be either too sensitive or not sensitive enough. If you can stick it out though, these parts are short, and the rest of the game should more than make up for them.

Another interesting feature is that you can play the game through with 2 different characters with similar yet differing storylines. While not being revolutionary, the producers do stress that if you really want to understand the story, you should play both characters all the way through.

--Multiplayer/Mods--

None at the moment, but I'm sure it won't take too long for people out there to figure both out. I have money down taht the first mod will be to let you play as either Neo, Trinity, or Morpheus.

--Overall--

If you aren't really a fan of the Matrix movies, DO NOT buy this game. You will not understand what is going on, nor will you appreciate the subtleties of the game experience. However, if you are like me and are an avid Matrix fan, this game delivers. I very much look forward to playing the rest of it. I hope you have found this review helpful, whether or not you decide to buy the game.
