I guess I can understand why this game was rated so high by the "professional" game reviewers you read on websites and game magazines. I doubt they have the time to play the game very long before they have to write a review for it. For the first 10 or so hours I played Black and White I thought it was great. Then I started running into all the many problems that have been discussed in other reviews here. The final straw was the "save game bug" which effectively makes it impossible to continue playing the game. You see, this bug crashes the game whenever you try to save it. And when you finish a land and go to move to the next one the game tries to save automatically. No problem I thought, I'll just get the patch. Turns out there still is no patch out for this game as of May 31, 2001. With the number of serious bugs this game shipped with it is inexcusable for the company that claims to take customer support seriously to not have a patch out after this long. This game was a long way from being finished or properly tested when it was released.
The thing that makes the situation even worse as that the game has some flaws at its core that make it just lack any enjoyment after you play it for awhile. I typically like micro-management type games. But Black and White takes this to new depths. And the "incredible AI" that was touted turns out to not be that incredible after all when you really dig into the game. The enemy gods you battle don't follow the rules at that you are playing under at all for one thing. Incredible AI? No, just cheating AI!
In summary: 1. It's a pretty game with nice graphics. 2. It's got good sounds and the voices are well done. 3. The game is one of the buggiest games I've played in years. 4. The game was incomplete, missing features that were supposed to be there. 5. The tedium factor becomes overwhelming after about 10 or 20 hours of play. These means the replay value is about nil.
Fun for about an hour

I bought this game after reading all the reviews/hype. At first glance it appeared promising, but after about 4 or 5 hours of game play it started to feel more like work instead of fun. The navigation is very tedious as well. Also they market the game as if you can be evil or good and it won't matter. That is not true at all. You pretty much have to do the "right" thing in order to proceed along the quest. You can sit around and rape and pillage but it won't move the story along. All in all I find the game to be very boring. Basically you spend all your time trying to get food and wood for your people and trying to fufill every little whim they have. The beasts are pretty lame as well. You have to like carry him around on a leash and "teach" him stuff. Then the beast is constantly hungry or tired so you have to feed him as well, on top of worrying about the villagers and at the same time trying to complete the scrolls. Like I said, it feels more like work that actual fun. To me it's like they tried to make you responsible for too much of the minor details instead of worrying solely about the big picture. If that's your idea of fun then go for it. To me it's just plain boring. I'm off to play Undying! Now that's my idead of FUN!!!

My interest was first brought to this game by word of mouth. Quickly I realized that my friend and I have completely different tastes for computer entertainment. The sounds were the first thing to annoy me. "We need food", "we need wood", "we need offspring" "we need, we need, we need" Next thing I knew, I was filled with the sudden urge to destroy my own towns out of plain boredom, and annoyance. Grabbing every person I saw whimpering and whining about what they didn't have, and throwing them off the horizon became the only fun that I had with this game (that fun only lasted 5 minutes). The micro-management was boring and a waste of my time. I gave this game away to a nephew, and just swallowed the loss of my 40.00. Don't make the same mistake. Pass this game up, and buy Sim City if you want to be a micro manager.

Fun game to play. Buy it, because it's cheap, and the graphics are good. Sorta hard to play if you aren't an intense gamer, other than that, all around good game. Possible 2002 Game of the Year? We'll see.
Black and White is like the sims theme park.

I love my sims, i have spent a lot of time over a year or so off and on improving them. and i thought i`d love this, but its like controling an entire world but in a childish way. it`s just not adult enough for me. i feel like i`m in a sims theme park. in fact the theme park is really more fun. this just has no challenge and gets too boring... sorry...... you won`t loose much sleep after a couple of days with this one. just so you know i`m 50 yrs old, retired and buy and play action games, mature action games.

Anyone who reads this, just take my advice and DO NOT buy the game right now. Depending on when you read this, check ... and see if there's a patch released for the game. If there is, then most likely you'll be happy with this game. If not, please leave it alone and come back to it later. Lionhead Studios put out an unfinished game and I don't think I've met anyone yet who has beat the game without having to start over due to game-stopping bugs. If you'd like more information, head over to ... and check out the Suggestions forum.
Lionhead does not have any common sence

Basicaly the game is good but it has not been tested properly. There are bugs that will cause it not to work with Win2K at all. I was told to contact EA for waranty Info on returning it. The Patch situation is just as bad as when ME came out. BWgame.com has very little info on patches.. basicily they are giving excuse after excuse. no real sincere apology, or indication that they will deliver a patch soon. Just empty promises.
Great Achievment... still the sims.

Well it is kind of fun. Who doesn't like being a god? You can fling infidels into cliffs. You can send a giant cow to attack and destroy villages.
Resource management is tricky you can't manage it too much or you cripple the village. You can't neglect them or you cripple the village. But other than that it's the sims amped up to a 60 foot cow.
I got bored after the third island and haven't touched it since.
