Overhyped/Overpriced? You Betcha!

I have to add myself to the list of people who were excited by the marketing and burned by the execution. I haven't experienced the technical problems expressed by most ... but I have to agree that the management of villages is overly cumbersome, and the supposedly amazing AI of the Creature is amazing only in how little it truly produces. Add to this an interface that's so intricate it makes hand-looming look simple, and you have the makings of a legendary waste of time and money. This one simply doesn't pay off for the gamer.

This is the ultimate in Strategy Gaming!!!

I've been waiting 2 years for this game, and it is definatley the ultimate in strategy games!!! If you want to buy your kid a game that isn't, usually, violent, and might actually teach them something, this is it. If you buy you child this game you will 1.) teach them to be responsible with their own increadibly intelligent pet 2.) teach them moral values, because the whole game revolves around how you play it, and the whole game world will change accordingly 3.) give them a whole lot of fun with 400 missions/tasks 4.) keep them from begging at your feet... and so on. The definative features of this game are the amazing graphics technology, and the slow, it isn't so fast that you'll start sweating just to keep up, and manipulative, you can do just about anything you want, game play. Also, this game is one of the first computer strategy games to have !!!NO INTERFACE!!! clouding up the screen. This means that everything you do in the game will be done with the mouse. Finally this game doesn't use texture patterns!!! There will be no repetative graphics, because it will create all graphics by blending textures to the exact detail, thus creating increadible graphics. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE IN MANIPULATIVE GAMING SO DONT MISS OUT ON IT!!!

I am sure this game is fun but...

Ok, I read the reviews here and on game sites for this game. It sounds like fun, but my god could it be any harder to play? I gave up on this game due to its overly hard to use interface and overly annoying tutorial!

I am they type of gamer that likes to get to the action not watch 20 minutes of video about the game. Of course the first time I ran the game it crashed luckly I am running Windows XP so I didn't need to reboot.

To do simple things in this game it takes great skill and the learning curve is a pain. Having to remember where eveything is, becuase damned if I can fine a small map to show important things like Age of Empires has.

The concept of the game is really cool, however attempting to play it well that is another story all together.

Not the best strategy game...

At first the thought of becoming and playing a deity appealed to me greatly. However, after awhile the game became dull, repetitious, and so boring that you no longer want to play. I persisted and after spending hours and finally beating the game... I felt this big emptiness...

disappointing

A longtime Alpha Centauri addict, I finally decided to try a new strategy game and, after a lot of research, settled on B & W. I spent a lot of hours playing this game and never really getting anywhere. At this point, whenever I have a spare hour, playing B & W is the last thing I want to do with it.
First, the graphics are really amazingly poor. I've got an Athlon 1.4 with 512 RAM, so I know it's not my system. Most of the ground is composed of nondescript brown smears, and the very cartoonish characters are made up of bitmaps stretched across really simple 3D forms. Secondly, the play is slow and uninspiring, with an awful lot of searching for lost items and moving things from one spot to another. Then there is navigating with the mouse; the game has a very innovative mechanism for allowing the player to move around in the game, but it falls far short of its potential--I spent an awful lot of time either dangling miles above my village or with my face pressed helplessly against a rock wall.
On the other hand, I bought the game because I thought it sounded like it had the potential to be a lot of fun--and I still do. I'm looking forward to a second installment, if there is one. Maybe they'll work out the kinks and the game will become what it should have been to begin with.

A disappointment

The game Black and White has some good ideas, such as being God and being able to control what was going on, but it did not meet up to the expectations. I find it really difficult to get the hang of the mouse controls, and at times it is extremely frustrating. I agree with one of the other comments made, you are following a story. You never are really in control! I find this game disappointing and I suggest looking else where for a game in which you want control.

you are a bore(oh, I mean a god)

What a waste of money. If you love the endless hours of searching for things like rocks, and especially if searching for your lost pet is a favorite thing to do, then for sure buy this game. If you get off on beating your dog, buy this game. If you love to waste money buy this game. Otherwise save your money and go rent spy kids 2, it'll be lots more fun and take way less time.

Does for Civilization what Dungeon Siege does for Diablo 2

Graphically this game is pretty good it was maid in 2001 so it is not going to have the greatest graphics. But for the type of game it is they are good. The premise is you are a god and you determine how a town and they're culture will develop. You can be a good god and tend to they're every need or you can be a bad god and torture and kill them for fun. You also get a creature to raise to be good or evil. Good and he will help you're town bad and he will help destoy it. I played this game for 4 hours then I realized that was the training section. So needless to say this game will take along time to beat. I have played for 15 hours or so now and have barely started. This is a good game for people that like RPG's, Strategy games, and Simulation games. Why did I give it a 4 this game is not for everyone. It does not have a lot of action. When you're creature fights with other creatures it is not like Mortal Kombat.

I just bought the game (aug 2003) and it's been out for quite a while now (B&W 2 is supposed to be coming out before long), however I found the game to still be solid, complex fun!

First off this game has you play the role of a God. You perform miracles and interact with the world to gain worshipers and do various missions and tasks. The real selling point of the game is it's open-endedness. The game certainly feels complex enough, while not being overly complex to play. There is a lot of depth and almost infinite number of ways to play. You can choose to be good and gain worshipers through acts of mercy and goodness, or you can reek havoc on the villagers and gain thier loyalty through fear. Either way... it's fun! You can even do a little of each as your own conscience permits.

The game really pulls this off well. I almost actually felt guilty when choosing to take a villager's sick brother and toss him into the ocean rather than heal him and answer her prayer to me. The game also has some really intricate AI. You get to have a pet of sorts in the form of a creature that allows you to further interact with the world and influence events. You dynamically train this creature by teaching him right from wrong and by him observing your behavior and learning. This is done very well and seems very sophisticated... it really feels like the creature develops a real and unique personality.

I've only been playing the game a day, but have run across only a few complaints. The controls can be a pain and you may want to tweak them (playing on a laptop with a touchpad is a real source of frustation). The graphics feel a bit antiquated as the game is beggining to visually show it's age - although they are still good, just not great - especially by today's (2003) standards.

All in all this game is original and offers a lot of fun. You will play and experiment for hours with this one and there is an infinite potential for replay value.

A wonderful game of playing god, where the people are at your mercy. The bad part about this game would have to be the length of it. Once you complete the game you are left hanging for more. The good part... those five levels are a blast as you raise a creature to be a giant.
