My friend and I went to the mall yesterday and camped out at the store that was to recieve Black and White. My friend was the first to get it, right out of the UPS delivery boxes. I told him "Let's not expect too much, because that only means we can be disappointed". How wrong I was. We installed it, and began playing. Incredible is about all I can say. I didn't know how incredible until just last night and this morning. I played this game for like 10 hours straight. I didn't get any sleep tonight, and unfortunately, I don't think I will be getting sleep for awhile longer. I don't want to go into the details because half of the joy is finding out the little touches in the game for yourself, but make no mistake: this is the game to buy. Im gonna go play some more.
Where's the game?

The first hour or so is fine. However, you'll soon find yourself asking "Where's the game?."
Villagers will constantly whine, you'll learn to absolutely hate a little whisper that says "Deeeaaath" evertime a villager dies, and picking trees for hours will get overly tiresome.
What about monster combat? Well, its my 3rd day in a row and my creature still cannot defeat an ogre. The combat control is ridiculous. When you try to load a saved game before combat, it doesn't even restore the creature's health values meaning, the save game feature is useless.
Peter M. designed a great interface and the idea is good, but the game itself is horrendous. In fact, its gotten so frustrating that the CD had actually been thrown across the room at a high velocity. I honestly want my money back and I've never been so disgusted with a "game" as I have with Black and White.
As an avid gamer and a game developer myself, I'd highly reccommend against anyone spending their money on this "game".
DOES work on Windows XP

Don't listen to the people that say that Black & White doesn't work on windows XP. I don't know what they are smoking but it works better than ever on my XP. There must be another reason that it didn't work for them like not enough memory, or wrong accelerator card. There are lots of other explanations for this problem. I think this game is one of the most original PC games and defiantly one of the most fun. Yes, it can be frustrating and hard at times but not everything is made for the minds of today.
I tried to really like this game...

...but even my optimism couldn't help me on this one. I was really excited about getting this game, I'd heard some good things about it here and there with the innovative AI and all, but I wasn't really that impressed.
Of course there are good things about this game. I love the fact that you can basically do what you want, there's no set-in-stone mission at all times. Now this isn't true throughout the whole game, but at least in the beginning they let you explore and play around.
Its a very challenging game at times. This is both good and bad. The worst part, I think of the whole game is the fact that you're supposed to be playing God, as a human being, but you're expected to be an actual god! I'm not omnipresent and I can't be in 18 different places at once. If I'm throwing wood and food miracles at my greedy worshippers and villagers who are constantly in need of something, then I miss my creature over behind a hut eating a villager and I don't punish him, he'll just keep doing it.
This game is like trying to raise quintuplets while housebreaking a puppy. Its crazy. Then they expect you to take over and manage more villages and get more creatures.
Don't get me wrong, I'm always up for a good challenge, but this game gets so challenging, its broken past the fun barrier.

I loved this game. I first played it in france and I thought they didn't sell it here, but when I found I was so excited and I bought it and it was so much fun. The only thing I don't like is slapping the animal. I seriously had to close my eyes I thought it was so mean. But other than that the graphics are great (besides in the people) The "god" play is so much fun, and being bad, is just plain evil.

This is the most visually stunning game I've ever seen, and I have played in excess of 200 games, so thats saying something. The creatures are wonderfully portrayed at all sizes and the miracles are well, just plain stunning. The camera view can be a little annoying at first, but its learning curve is not very steep, maybe an hour and a half and you'll have it mastered. But above all else is the combonation of the (in my opinion) two best genres of computer games: Real Time Strategy, and Role Playing Game. The only major flaw in Black & White is that when you throw stuff, it doesn't always hit the intended target, but that can be easily corrected with some practice. Also, the insertion of the "Miracles" is a wonderful idea as it allows you to actually become part of the game temorarily. I say, if you like RTSs and you like RPGs, shell out the 20 bucks and buy Black & White. So to quote PCGamer "Buy it, Play it, Enjoy it, your welcome."

i agree with some of the more negative critiques here. i bought this game based on the hype and reviews at the time of release. although it didnt look like something i would normally enjoy, and i didnt, i found the game cumbersome, i didnt like the games control system, and it was all a bit twee and boring. the concept left me cold to be honest, just goes to show dont believe the hype. an expensive waste of a very few hours.
Awesome Graphics! A little boring after a while, tho.

This Game is absolutely wonderful. I love that I get to play God, and that I get to raise a creature, and that I can pick whether or not I'm good or bad! The only reason I give it a 4/5 is because after a while, it gets a little boring trying to influence village after village. It needs a little more action! Over all though, I've had this game for a while, and I still play it....a lot.
Great!

I love this game! Having to play the tutorial with every new game is a drawback, but it's more than made up for by the rest of it. Best for builder-types (if you like SimCity, this means you) are the skirmish games. Most of the time the enemies on those "mini-games" aren't so adamant about getting to you, so you can build HUGE cities ("villages" is not the word to describe how big these settlements can get) before you take over the whole land. As for the constant crying of "must have wood!" "We need homes!", you can SHUT THAT RACKET OFF by going into Options and selecting No Help. It's a great improvement once that's shut down--you can then go within 100 virtual feet of a store without getting bugged. Neutral is the easiest way to play, but I find myself trying to be 100% either way for the challenge. Getting a glowing creature (good) or getting bats to happen instead of doves (evil) both require a lot of discipline, because elements from both alignments come in handy and it's hard to abstain entirely from either type of action. About the only thing that's really not fair is that it thinks you're evil if you blast the enemy towns even if you help out your towns A LOT (I think that should equate to neutral, but it doesn't)!! You've got to watch that your creature doesn't see you doing anything you don't want it to do, or it'll be hard to drive the habit from it. Other than that, the creature is quite fun and he's a lot easier to train than a real animal! Especially potty training! Although it will keep on eating things that make it sick (duh) unless trained not to. As for the tech issues, it works fine on a high-end computer--no problems with XP and a 128Meg GeForce video card. The old cheapie computer had some graphical issues which were a pain, but it was still worth it compared to having to play the other video games out there.

A great game for the power hungry. if you really want an awesome experience, download the "sandbox extreme" map and have a great time. it has all one time miracle dispencers that replenish in seconds. it is great. back to the game, you can cast miracles (such as lightning, heal, wolves, fireball, blast and grow, shrink, andchange allignment of creature [good or bad]) control a creature of your choice (in the beginning its a chimp, tiger, or cow) i would definately recommend this game to anybody who can afford it
