If you liked the first one you will love the second! It's like the firts one, except enhanced to the extreame. More spells than you can immagine, really cool new charecter classes. This game is a must for any ad&d fan.

First, I must say - I'm not what you call a "hard core" computer gamer - I like to play a cool game every now and then but each of these games takes me months to finish. I love the RPG genre - I've been playing those for ages, and Planescape Torment was the best game I ever played (and my first review here), so I had pretty high expectations for Baldur's gate II. I didn't play the first game - it was said it's not necessary and I agree with this claim.

So why am I giving the game 3 stars?
Well, there were plenty of good things about the game - an *unbelievable* amount of spells - up to level 9, good graphics, very cool story - I love the premise of the series. But the game itself is nothing new.. everything I did I kind of felt "been there done that", the same quests over and over again.. I didn't even enjoy most of the combats after a while, constantly having to reload the game. Also, each character had a set of sentences it kept shouting every 40-60 seconds (how many times must I hear "Butt kicking - for goodness"???) .. it started to drive me crazy after a while, until I completely turned off the speakers. (Maybe there is a way to disable this, I couldn't find an obvious way, at least) And last, the game is just too long. I know it's supposed to be a good thing - it is, actually - that's one of the things which originally drew me - but since the quests are so repetitive I really got tired of the game - I think it would've been better if it was a bit shorter.
To summarize - I think BG2 is a really cool game, and would recommend to anyone who just can't get enough of gaming. But if you have a rather limited time like me, and you only have a certain amount of patience for this - you can skip this game (go to Torment, perhaps, which was much better in my opinion). I know I'm not going to get the expansion, as much as I'm curious how the story ends.

One of The Best RPG Games Ever

Baulders Gate 2 has a classic appeal that just won't die. I have been playing newer games like World of Warcraft and Elder Scrow IV with there astonishing graphics and challenging play but theres still something that doesnt rank with the likes of Baulders gate 2.

To me its the plot and subplots of the game that make this game remarkable. The ability to make choses like what quests, who you want in your party, freedom to act Evil or Good. Each chose can change the game and make the game replay as enjoyable as the first. The charactor creation is as good as it gets for an RPG game. So if you want a game that isnt as keen on visual as it is on it overall story line. Get this game it wont disapiont. even if its 6 years old.

This Game is AMAZING!!!, graphics, gameplay, storyline, Everything, if your a fan of the first game or your a new player you will love it, oh yeah and it runs fine on my system - celeron 400 64MB Ram although it can be a bit jerky and slow on the load times, never the less the ability to create your own party from scratch and the different kits and weapons and spells that are available is simply breathtaking, I would recommend this game to anyone it is simply THE best RPG that i have ever played. ...

I know it's nothing new but: THE BEST GAME EVER

I was never a d&d fan, so you can emagine what I thought when my friend wanted to show me Baulder's Gate I. When I first saw it, I was amazed!!! I looked everywhere searching for that game-unsuccessfuly. when I finally found it I immediatly ran to my comp. and played it 'till I finished it. When I heard that there is a new Baulder's Gate I was excited. After a long search I finally got it and immidiatly started to play it. At first it seemed boring, however, that was only the first impretion. After about an hour of playing I started to enjoy it. Eversince the excitment just growed untill tonight (1:45 am) I've finished it! this was a very big dis appointment to me... Now I have to wait about 5 month's to start playing the next game... by then I'll be in the Israely army... coclusion: THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!! (only one flaw-it's too ... short-inspite the fact that I spent over 300 hours of gaming!) If you don't have it yet-buy it(I recomend that you play BG1 first)

An Improvement over the First.

This game is great, while trying and challenging, it is fun and dynamic enough to keep you riveted. The rewards and dynamism of the characters allows you to enjoy the game, as well as the actions of the characters in it. The places you travel to and visit are unique and well thought through as well. You may be stuck in a dungeon for a while, but the reward for success is not too little nor too much, but just right.

Still being able to control each movement and roll down to the core should you choose, no battle is unbeatable. For fans of Baldur's Gate, this sequel is wonderful.

Impossible to have a low 1 star rating as gaming excellence.

Mr. Fox's review is ignorant of the complete overhaul of depth and gameplay in BG2 as compared to the original. BG2 is not exclusively about improved user interface or multiplayer team shootups. First and foremost it is an RPG, and most likely the best that has ever been made based on a RPG world particularly the AD&D Forgotten Realms. Bioware and Black Isle did a Lord of the Rings type effort job in incorporating the immense background from the original FR set in the 80's and the myraid expanded storylines from the novel series , expansion products and even Dragon magazine particularly the SpellJammer AD&D world. This kind of attention to detail is hard to top perhaps equaled by the recent SW:Knights of the Old Republic. I had played a few AD&D paper sessions in the 80's and Balder's Gate was already on the map of Faerun on the Sword Coast. A relatively major town but still secondary to Waterdeep.

One of the best improvements over BG1 is the expansion of the character levels and abilities over 15th level incorportating the known limits of the 2nd Ed. AD&D rules. For example, many 9th level mage and 7th level spells are implemented. I was surprised that there was even an entertaining game version of the "wish" spell in BGII:TOB. Not to mention game balance is preserved and the capability of the 2nd ed rules to handle high level characters in this real-time CRPG was done so well by the programmers. As your character approaches 30th level and above, the sense of the NPC opponents' power in no way diminishes with the excellent implementation of the high level spells. There's a lot of advanced scripting and AI theory involved with the NPCs, a quality effort. The storyline, humor, voice acting and immersion into the plot and world of the Sword Coast and the main character is probably the best since the revolution of the Ultima series of the 8-bit machines. BGII came at time when computers were literally twice as fast and bigger in storage capacity than the pcs when BGI came out. BGI needed 300-500mhz machines while BGII fully took advantage of 1ghz+ machines. Perhaps Mr. Fox still hasn't gotten out of the initial dungeon yet. Keep playing, the beginning is literally 1% of the entire game. Hopefully Black Isle and Bioware return to a fantasy RPG world(not based on the Drow please, maybe even something LOTR) after their current excellent Star Wars:KOToR 3-D efforts.

The standard for RPG game brought to the PC!

I enjoyed the first Baldur's Gate but I was shocked with the sequel! I had no idea that they had improved upon the game so dramatically. If you're not familiar with the Baldur's Gate series, the games are adaptations of the popular role playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. If you're not knowledgeable of Dungeons and Dragons rules, the game may be frustrating at times, but once you've learned the format, this game is one of the most enjoyable RPGs on the PC ever.

Games such as the Ultima series attempted to create a universe that wrapped up the player in a new world. Many have failed in recent years but Baldur's Gate II is one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I have ever had.

Set in a realm of dragons and wizards, you control a character through a set of chapters meanwhile completing quests, picking up adventurers to join you, discovering new magical items and figuring out puzzles. New elements of interaction between your party members (love affairs, arguments, etc.) have been included in the sequel to give it a sense of realism. The sequel has also adapted itself in a more efficient way to keep track of your many quests and storylines.

The Baldur's Gate world offers your character the chance to be good or evil with alternative missions, reponses, party members and other things available to allow you the chance to role play the game as you'd like. Great features such as inserting your own audio files for your character or playing online with other players are allowed.

This game is the standard for RPG titles and you'd have to play an online fantasy game to wrap yourself in a world with more role playing options than this one.

Very good, though not perfect.

As a die-hard BG and IWD fan, there was no question as to whether to purchase this title or not. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but the former definitely rule. First of all, you'll have a host of new items and spells to choose from, many of which never made an appearance in BG or IWD. You'll also be able to choose character kits that will make the game quite fun to play more than once, if just to see how they work. The battles you engage in will be far more challenging than anything in the original, due primarily to the fact that you start at a high level. Complex interaction with NPCs makes for many more plot twists than either IWD or BG, and will reward you with unique quests depending on who is in your party.

On that note, there are many special abilities that NPCs or character kits have, which have never been seen in a computerized D&D game to date. For those that enjoy puzzles and convoluted plots, there are plenty to be found. For those that can't stand the mere thought of such, you can simply blast your way through to the finish and ignore it all. Additionally, some items you find will come in pieces, and you will need to find all the pieces to forge them into a whole. They are quite worth it once you're done. The backgrounds, as always, are splendidly detailed, though a few locations have been 'recycled' from BG and Tales of the Sword Coast. You'll also see some very impressive monsters in the game, including dragons.

On the downside of things, the spell effects are not far improved from BG. New spells of course have new effects, but the old ones will look drably familiar. I find myself wishing the producers had used Icewind Dale's beautiful spell effects in place of the old ones. Additionally, the paper dolls and avatars have been modified slightly. Some might disagree with me, but I personally think they look stupid. They really should have stuck with the old ones. Though a few of the enemies you'll run into are impressively constructed, I can't help noticing the general lack of such enemies as compared to IWD. If you're looking for eye candy in battles, you might be disappointed. The game is also a tad bit easy to finish, likely due to the lofty levels you can push your characters to. Last of all, you're going to have to (GASP) use your brain to get out of some places, and turning down the difficulty won't do anything. You might want to get a guide if puzzles aren't your thing.

All in all, I highly recommend this game. It is worth buying, and then some. At the least, you'll spend a long time playing it, and you won't be disappointed when done.
