An enormous game well worth its price.

I was a big fan of the first Baldur's Gate. So when this game came out, naturally I had to rush out and get it. I was not disappointed. This game is simply epic in scope. It is HUGE! I was glued to my computer screen literally for months. Though it takes a long time to finish, there is never a dull moment in the game. The quests are intriguing, the NPCs interesting, and the dungeon and city areas intricate and detailed. I lost many nights of sleep trying to complete a mini-quest or defeat one of the more annoyingly hard-to-kill monsters such as a dragon or a lich. The important thing, though, is that I had fun doing so.

I also liked the fact that this time around the game provided the option of a full install. No more annoying CD switching. The game for the most part worked fine on my Pentium II 350 MHz. There were never any crashes, but occasionally it would suffer from slowdowns and the audio would stutter. After a while this can become really annoying. I don't know if the patch fixes this or not, since I didn't bother to download it, but for the sake of other gamers I hope it does. The game controls are pretty easy to learn, but it helps if you've played a DnD game before to understand the combat system. Sometimes the game becomes a tad overwhelming, especially when you have to know exactly what each spell does and when to use it. One shouldn't have to memorize an entire textbook-sized manual to fully enjoy a game, but playing BGII I often felt like you were at a disadvantage if you didn't.

Overall, though, I highly recommend BGII. It definitely gives you the most bang for your gaming buck. If you are an RPG fan, this game is a must. If you have never played an RPG before, this is the perfect place to start. I can't wait for BGII's expansion pack, Throne of Bhaal, to come out so the adventure can start all over again.

The best computer RPG in a long while, possibly ever

I got more fun out of this game than just about any other I've played. The world is incredibly rich and detailed. All of the buildings in Athkatla aren't just filler--they actually have interesting things in them. The main plotline is very long, and there are countless side quests to pursue if you want to. Even when you've finished the game once, you can have fun replaying it, since you can choose different party members and accept different quests. I've played it three times and am still not sure that I've found everything.

The game is an enormous improvement over the first Baldur's Gate. I never actually finished that game--I just lost interest after a while, and never really figured out why it was so highly rated. In BG2, the other members of your party actually have personalities, and the plot is more interesting. The graphics are not that advanced technically, but this can actually be a strength. Because the graphics are not 3D, they could be prerendered, and Bioware obviously excels in that department. From the Arabian Nights-like Athkatla to the pseudo-Victorian Trademeet, the areas are very detailed, and rarely drab like in BG1.

There are also plenty of monsters to fight, spells to cast, and items to find. There's a surprise lurking around every corner, at least in the better parts of the game.

Admittedly, this game is buggy, but it's still great. With the exception of Planescape: Torment, there isn't any other CRPG that can match its characters, plot, depth, and replayability.

Sets the Standard for RPGs

I've been an RPG fan since the days of "Bard's Tale", and Interplay continues the classic tradition with this sequel to "Baldur's Gate", which redefined RPG gaming on the PC. In "BGII:SOA", your character continues his/her dark Bhaalspawn legacy. I won't get into the story too much, since you should play both games and simply become engrossed, but note that your lineage is central to the game's constantly unfolding plot. Since you are the child of a god, people throughout Amn are very interested in you and will try to sway you and your party of adventurers to do their bidding...whether it be good or evil is up to you.

TO start, SOA is not easy. Your character starts off at a high level, so forget about the easy random encounters with bandits. Sure, you'll be knee-deep in hobgoblin blood once in a while, but soon, you'll be battling maginificent D&D monsters like beholders, fire elementals, and even some dragons. Thankfully, SOA gives you NPCs immediately to begin your quest. Old friends like Minsc and Imoen are back, and soon, Jaheira and Edwin can join in the fun. Romances are possible, and the added flavor or class-specific strongold quests make the game truly exciting. Paladins can join an Order, fighters can acquire a keep, bards can be the lead in a play, and mages can train to become unstoppable killing machines. Picking your party is half the fun, as race, class, and especially alignment all come into play. Yes, Korgan the Berzerker is an awesome front-line dealer of death, but due to his Chaotic Evil nature, does your Cavalier keep him aboard? In the short-term maybe, but as time goes by, you'll find the intra-party squabbles quite entertaining and perhaps even deadly.

The interface is simply to manipulate, and kudos to Black Isle for finally allowing users to hide all of the panels and work solely by keyboard command to bring up character inventories, journals (which are now tracked by quest too!), and maps. Graphics and sound render brilliant atmospheres complete with EAX, and epic battles never seem to slow down, despite the monstrous size of your enemies. Spell effects are updated and quite amazing as your mages become more powerful.

BGII:SOA will keep you on your PC for hours, and for that, enjoy the ride. There are dozens of quests to keep you going, and with the excitement of finding powerful artifacts, weapons, and armor, your party should glady take on all of them.

So forget about the hack-and-slash of Diablo II. Pick up Baldur's Gate II if you're interested in a game that will thrust you into a world of magic and mystery. You'll find that once you go in, it's very difficult to come back out.

A year from my life...

First of all, I bought BG:1 sometime in October 2000. It was twenty dollars and I had heard some good things about it. Little did I know that I would become hooked. The idea of creating a character and then after beating a game, restarting a new one without losing my weapons and more importantly, my power was a dream come true.
Then I began to download programs to eliminate the XP cap so I could get more powerful.
Finally, I got BG2 and it was even more addicting than the first. The character specialty kits quickly became my favorite part allowing me to play as an assassin or even an evil cleric of Talos. The character specific quests kept me playing on and on, even though I had beaten the game, a rare feat for any game. Finally, a combination of school and life dragged me back to reality, but not before a year had gone by.
If you even remotely love RPGs with great storylines and variability, I recommend this game.
This game is a must have for everybody.
PS: Try the multiplayer online mode. You won't be disappointed.

This game is simply huge. I played through it mainly ignoring all the sub-quests and followed the main route, which took me longer than most games, and I loved it. The plot is top-knotch, the depth is endless and the games features are fantastic, such as 300+ spells, superb NPCs, great locales, epic battles, items and weapons to die for, dozens of good monsters and an excellent main villain. After all that I fired it up for another go through in preparation for Throne of Bhaal. I was gobsmacked at the amount of side-quests you could partake in. It turns out I played about a quarter of the game going through it normally and missed out on some fantastic adventures. This is the best RPG ever made for computer in my opinion even though Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast were classics, this is better!

Eeeee. I bought BG2 on Friday, Sep 22. From that day to this, all I was doing is playing this game. I got a "zero" in one of my projects 'cause I was fighting evil monsters instead of doing the project. :) Cavaliers do not need C programming, right? To get back to the game, it is the best!!! The graphics, the story, the battle system, the environment, all too good to be true. Even the music and voice acting are intriguing. If you think there is no such thing as a perfect game, wait until you've played this game. (It does have a lot of memory leaks though). I recommend that you get the Versus guide book 'cause the number of quests in the game might overwhelm you; you need the book to know which one is optional and which one is required. Now, let me go finish that darn game so that I could get my normal life back. (Minsc and Boo! Rangers and hamsters everywhere. Rejoice!)

WHEN cRPGs TOUCHED THE SKY...

This was the LONGEST the MOST FUN game I have ever played! And, mind you, I am not an easy customer (feel free to browse through my reviews, you will see what I mean...)

The original BG series was excellent in all of storyline, gameplay, music and stability. Now, nowadays, sequels usually mean a graphically-improved expansion (at best). BG2 is a rare exception of the sequel clearly SURPASSING the original. And in the case of such great original, this means a lot!

Words fail to describe the perfect harmony of brilliant ideas, interweaved story-lines and detailed coding that makes this game an unsurpassable classic! Do not let the slightly outdated graphics discourage you. They were cutting edge only some years ago - and you will be able to unleash their full potential even on mid-range PCs!

I have yet to meet anyone who has played it and not raved about it! Hard-core D&D funs will find the character building, fighting checks and balances and overall experience very close to the actual pen-&-paper games.
Casual computer gamers will notice none of the tedious stuff of other cRPGs as the gameplay runs smooth and beautifully.
You even have the choice to turn it into either a turn-based or an action game by tweaking the auto-pause options! I am telling you: this is how computers games should be!

You will let yourself get lost in the deep dungeons of the labyrinthic story; you will be laughing out loud to the humorous dialog; you will be surprised as to who is a double and triple-agent.
There is an evil beyond imagining unleashed and only you with your party can stand in its way.
Party members offer a multitude of unpredictable balancing points and diverging story-lines of their own: side quests, conflicts and love affairs enrich the story in so many original ways!

An unsurpassed classic!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Best Game Ever Made? Or second To Diablo 2?

This Game is Awsome! I Have had it for almost 2 weeks and am 1 quest away from chapter 4. I am a female Paladin and am enjoying the fact that I can use almost any item I want. This game has an easy and understandable gameplay with lots of things to do to challenge avid gamers yet still make it fun for a first time player. I was thinking to myself that this game is THE BEST EVER until I had a quest givin to me in chapter 3. I was offered help by two different guilds who are at war, so I am stuck in the middle of this war and I am constantly chased by Vampires. If I would have sided with the other guild I would have been chased by mage assasins, they are both horrible. So after I received this quest the game suddenly got extremely Hard. I was thrown into something I didn't want a part of and now I am dying a lot more then before. To answer my own question this game is not second to Diablo 2 and deserves at least the: GAME OF THE YEAR title from the magazines. Go check this game out, you won't regret it~!

Possibly the best RPG in the history of RPG's!!!!

I've had this game now for about a year and just beat the game. I'll tell ya, it's an incredible game! There are endless things that you can do in this game. The frist great feature is that u can create your character. Unlike many games where you get stuck with a boring premade character. In Baldur's Gate, you can decide wether your character is mlae or female. What type of race you would want to be(Human, Elf, Half-Elf, Gnome,Dwarf,Halfling, and Half-Orc). Then you get to pick you class. There are also many different things to pick in that. That is one of the best qualities of the game. The gameplay is also awesome. Over 100 different spells to chose from. Multiple lands to go to. Unexpected twists and turns which will completely take you by surprise. There is also many different things to do other than to just kill Irenicus. There are also many side quests for you to do. There are also many types of creatures.

The storyline is great, but the weapons and armor are another story. There are tons of different types of weapons. Some typical, some magical. Each weapon has either a description of how it became or just what it is. You can also get many types of armor. You can also get cloaks, robes, girdles, gaunlets, rings, amulets, sheilds, and boots. All of the catergories have some magical items in them.

I will sort out the pros and cons:

PRO:
1 THE GORE! You can make the creatures body parts fly all over the screen. Of course you can turn it off.
2 Many types of weapons, armor, and spells.
3 Different types of creatures to fight.
4 Multi play!! You can play with other people!!
5 Many shops and temples to go into.
Those were some of the pros. I would run out of space if i listed them all.

Cons:
1 Memory!! If you do the full installation, it takes about 2500mb
2 Each area has to load up.
3 If you decide to go on a slaughtering streak, it may affect some quest to where it cant be completed.
4 Lots of talking. Its not bad but not good.
5 I can be very frusterating.

This is not a game for people that can't read very well. Most of the time key things are scripted. Some times voices will actually say stuff but not to often.

I hope this helped you. If you are a hard core RPG fan and have about 100 hours to spare, buy this game!!
