I agree with most of the reviewers here, in that this game has all the elements of a very good (not great) FPS-RPG combo game. The story line is very engaging, the use of the environment and different weapons/plasmids during combat makes the game a lot of fun and the game is a visual treat. People have likened the story to some of Ayn Rand's work and well I can't complain, after all who doesnt like feeling part of something more sinister and complex than a mere run and gun video game? However I feel that the lack of Multiplayer and co-op limit the game's appeal atleast from a financial standpoint. Is the game worth 59.99, the same amount we are charged for Halo 3 or Mass effect. I think not. Also the gameplay is rather easy due to the ability to regenerate onself in a Vita-chamber while your opponents health stays static. Overall, the game is a lot of fun and would be a better value if it was priced at say 49.99.

Having just recently purchasing the Xbox 360, this is only my second game. The first, Gears of War, blew me away with its graphics and gameplay so I didn't know if Bioshock could live up to all its hype. Man, does it ever! From the very first scene of your character crashing into the ocean and you swimming for your life, Bioshock grabs you. As the wreckage from your crashed plane slowly sinks all around you and you swim to the entrance of Rapture, you know this is going to be cool! I'm an older gamer, 43 yrs old, so I've seen how games have evoled from the old Atari to this masterpiece. I'm only a little way through the game (unlike teenagers who can sit around and play video game for hours, I have a lot more going on in my life)but when I do have a spare half-hour or so this is a great way to get away from reality and immerse yourself into the world of Rature. By far, one of the best games I've played on any console or computer. Must buy, for sure!
Great game, but...

This game was great, but it was a bit short. It drew me in from the beginning, so much so that I had to play it straight through. The only problem with that was how short the game was. I wish there would have been more. The story was great, I just wish there was more of it.
A great eerily suspenseful addition for any gamer.

I recently finished playing this game and was amazed at the amount detail found both within the graphics as well as the storyline. From the very begining the graphics had me hooked. The water and structures were the most realistic I have seen surpassing even Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This amount of detail continued through out the game, although once the game has gotten moving, which isn't far from the beginning, your focus is soon immersed within everything else that is going on around your character, namely trying to stay alive.
In this respect, there wasn't much of a delay as you are pretty much immediately thrown into action, if not a little preemptively due to the music, which I will discuss later on, and the atmosphere of your surroundings. And although the controls take a little getting used to, this can be said about many games and should not be a deterent. One nice feature is the ability quickly switch between weapons and plasmids (which I will not discuss, because they are something that are better experienced rather than talked about). This ability allows you to better battle against tougher opponents such as Houdini Splicers and the infamous Big Daddies.
Concerning the storyline, I often find it hard to get caught up in a game unless it has a decent overall storyline, and this definitely didn't disappoint. There is a series plots and subplots and little twists enough to keep anyone's attention, unless of course you are in the middle of a battle, then there is generally just one thing on your mind, survive. There are also a number of surprises, both intriguing and eerie. The only parts of the story that I wish had been gone into further are the backstory of the Big Daddies and the Little Sisters and the events that led to the current state of the underwater city, although it is possible that I just missed some of the audio diaries along the way.
Finally, I wish to talk about the sound, or more specifically the music. Once again, the music is fantastic from beginning to end. Although I don't remember anything more recent than the 1950s, each song seemed to fit what was happening at the time adding a classic feel to it (with the time period taking place not too long after WWII) as well as superbly creating the creepy feeling that there is something waiting for you just around the corner. Besides the musical selections, the normal audio was also very suspenseful. Between the sound of dripping water, distant falling objects radio transmissions, and the sound of nearby enemies it is like an eerie symphony more effective than any horror/suspense movie I have seen for a long time.
Ground breaking, but...

This is one of the hardest to write reviews I have ever done. I know Bioshock is art, its story and interaction are just amazing. The way the story plays out combined with the voice acting and setting are just ground breaking. I should love everything about this game, that being said this isn't one of my favorite games, and that is just my personnel preference. The actual FPS portion of the game is tried and true, where it excels is the way the story plays out. This is much more than just a game, it is easy to see the political and social ideas that come into play. But it is not necessary to read into it and it can be enjoyed for what it is, a good solid FPS with a great story line. The game play is rather familiar though, there are a good number of 'go and fetch an item' and 'go and kill this guy' quests. To me it felt as if it slowed the flow of the game a bit. The shooting and weapons are nothing terribly new but do have their own feel to them. The plasmas on the other hard are pretty neat, though if you have played a good FPS/RPG that contains a magic system you will be pretty familiar with it. But all up, love it or hate it, Bioshock is a game you really need to play if you consider yourself a gamer.
Good game play...but disturbing story line.

I played the game for like an hour and had to turn it off. The story line was a little too gruesome and disturbing for my taste.

Don't believe the hype. Look at all the reviews on this site that just blush about this game. They all seem a bit too well written, i.e. how amazon is known for selling reviews and promoting such great reviews for products with a lot of marketing behind them.
Back to the actual game. My first complaint. There is just too much going on, the game's environment is way too busy. Most games of this nature would introduce complicated aspects to a game a piece at a time. This game unloads more than a handful of new aspect:, game play, plot structure, up mods (of which there are plasmoids and other such features, of which's ammo aren't named the same but are ADAM and EVE) game mapping all in a matter of a minimum of two hours of game play. The map is just utterly confusing, even with the arrow that points you in the right directon (which it does only at cerain aspects of the game). To help on this confusion they have a number of "diaries" made to unlock glimpses of the plot to you. Playing for about a half hour two hours in I ran across at least five. It becomes so over whelming to have to listen to these diaries to keep up to date on what you're supposed to look out for that they should have found a better way to incorporate them into the game (i.e. You have to find them, recognize them asgainst the several options you have to search for - ammo, money, plasmoids, upgrades, health, etc etc - that to see "oh it's another diary on the microscopic font on the screen" and then hold down A and listen to it while doing everything else.)
Additionally, the setting is so dark - which as a mood setter is good, but for game play is horrible. Someone would appear behind you shooting a tommy gun and it would take more than a few seconds of gaping around before they're actually found. At which point you've lost a good amount of health. Then there's the vita tanks. The points where if you die you're automatically respawned with just about every weapon/item you had before. And if you were fighting an someone, then the damage you had inflicted is still present. Ever heard of that in a game before? Neither had I, and it's there because if it wasn't you toss the game in your closet and forget it.
Did you play Condemned: Criminal Origins? Did you like it? Yeah, I didn't think so. In that case avoid this game, because the fighting style is basically the same. Nameless lackee jumps out from wall swinging wildly in that same clunky manner, running in the same style. And you're melee attack is exactly the same. They may have well as called this game. Condemned: Aquatic Surrender. Thank God, I rented it.

This game is the best I have ever seen, it is a must have check out the demo...you will buy it @ amazon great prices. The game opens in 1960. The player assumes the role of Jack Fontaine, a passenger on an aircraft that crashes into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Jack swims for the only structure he sees, a lighthouse that serves as the above-surface entry point into Rapture - a grand metropolis under the water. Descending into the city using a bathysphere, he learns of the original prosperous history of Rapture through a pre-recorded film, narrated by the founder of Rapture, Andrew Ryan; but upon arrival the Player discovers that the once-prosperous city has decayed into a shadow of its former self. He is quickly led to safety by a man named Atlas, who communicates to Jack over a short-wave radio; Atlas believes that Jack is his only hope in reuniting with his wife and child. After moving through several levels of flooding infrastructure, the player is discovered by Andrew Ryan, who communicates with the player, assuming him to be an intelligence officer sent by either the KGB or the CIA.

There are plenty of in-depth reviews of this game already on here, so here's my advice as a gamer and a fan of the predecessors to Bioshock, System Shock 1 & 2.
Bioshock is a great game. The graphics, sound, and art design are top-notch. However, for all the flair, it eventually becomes obvious that the storyline is totally linear and that there aren't any consequences to your use (or avoidance) of 'plasmids'. Basically, they're just 'magic' weapons, or ability-boosters in the form of 'tonics' instead of 'items'.
I got pretty into this game and beat it in around 12-15 hours. At the end, players will discover that this is, for all its cinematic aspirations, just a video game. There's little replay value when you realize that, regardless of the difficulty level or what bullet you decide to fire at an enemy, the story will be exactly the same.
AI is mediocre (enemies run straight at you unless they have guns, in which case they run at you while juking side to side), enemies are repetitive (big daddies and splicers -- that's it!), and you can easily beat the game using the starting weapon... a wrench that happens to be as powerful as a machine gun.
So give this game a RENT in order to play through and enjoy the initial atmosphere and entertaining gameplay, but save yourself the $60 investment to own it. You'll get more value from an online shooter like HALO 3, or an engaging RPG or strategy game.
I'm FPSed out!!! Lets get something new.

I grew up in the age of Atari, Nintendo, SNES, Sega etc. and i use to dream of games looking realistic and being immersed in it. Bioshock sadly does neither, the pace of the game can get annoyingly quick to were you really have no time to just explore Rapture, unlike say Oblivion where you can pretty much explore all day and not have anything jump out at you. Also the graphics are very good, but seem very doom 3ish. I have been playing FPS games since wolfenstein and DOOM came out, and i must admit they are getting old. I think next gen consoles need to quit worrying so much about creating "just" great enviroments and start creating some great GAMES. Most stuff on Xbox 360 you find is shoot this, blow up that, kill this, mame that, it just gets repetitious after the first 20 minutes of nearly every game you play. We need more platformers, remember games like
Sonic, Tomb Raider, Maximo(PS2), Sly COOPER(ps2), the list goes on, even Gears of War, Lost Planet, and Resident Evil 4 while violent still had more depth than all the First Person Shooters combined. To make a long story short i'm tired of walking around just seeing my hand or arm sticking out shooting things point blank.
Games to look forward to
Crash Of The Titans(definately Different)
A new Next gen MX ATV game wow FINALLY!!! after 2 years.
Assassins Creed-This will own even Halo 3, sorry fanboys:)
Alone in the Dark-Yeah now we're talking the first next gen Survival Horror Game!!
Resident evil 5 whenever it makes it way out.
Indiana Jones-Pysched as hell for this one.
Clive Barkers Jericho-Yes maybe and FPS, technically survival horror though:D
So lets get the variety back in gaming, heck i still play the PS2 more than the 360 just because of all the different games:)
And btw keep Halo 3 it does not look impressive, never understood the hype of that game seek and destroy your enemy, gee that hasnt been done before has it???
