One word, WOW!

This game rules! I was so sick and tired of spending $60 on a piece of crap game but having played BioShock through once already I'd pay double for a game of this quality.

So, what makes this game so good? We for starters you can save your progress at anytime, anywhere. No looking for save points or tokens just click start and save game. Second, the graphics are incredible. Every detail right down to the rusted bolt. The water in the game, the best EVER! Finally, the game play is phenominal! Characters, story, plot twists and never tiring gameplay puts this game in my top 10 must haves. You won't go wrong with BioShock.

I absolutly loved this game, and I rarely review games on amazon. One of the main reasons I wrote this is because I'm tired of people writing idiotic bash reviews who have nothing better to do (one guy even said that the graphics sucked, I had to laugh). I hate it when people pick the smallest things in games and lower their rating to 1-star.

This game is THE game to own.

From the moment the first moments, I was enraptured by the experience of playing bioshock. It was amazing. If you consider yourself a gamer of any kind, you simply do not want to miss this unforgettable experience.

If only all games could be half as good as it is Bioshock! Everything in this game is so beautifully constructed to make your gaming experience so unique and like any other. BioShock has it all...graphics, sound, weapons and oh my ..the story is the probably the main reason why I picked my copy the same day it came out. This proves why games that have a plot and a story that keeps everything together, are such a success. I mean, take a look at Gears of War, Halo or GTA, all those games have amazing stories that are like the glue that keeps everything flowing so smoothly; with BioShock the developers took it even higher to a whole new level. They created a game so interesting that it makes me want to play it over and over again. This is perfection at its best!

Alot of first person shooter games have been coming out for the 360. Mostly all of them are the same. Objective there, kill bad guys, finish objective, done. Many are linear. Bioshock does fall into linear gameplay, but with many choices on how to get from point A to B. The games level of depth on how you can kill your enemies is very impressing. On the back of the box it boasts that, "no two gamers will play the game the same way." And by that statement a new breed of first person shooter is born, driven by individual player choice, morality, and style of gameplay.

~Graphics---9
~Sound------9
~Gameplay---9
~Replay-----7 (Lack of multiplayer, 2 possible endings, long adventure)

A Masterpiece. What more can I say?

A while back, I went to Game Stop to pick up something and as usual the guy behind the counter was trying to get me to reserve every game in the book including Bio Shock which at the time I had heard nothing about. We had about a 5 minute conversation, (with him doing most of the talking) about how great it was going to be and how it was going to hold gamers over until Halo 3 was released. After all that I told him no thanks, thinking to myself just how great can a FPS game be? After I got what I needed I was on my way, and before I left he suggested trying out the Demo. A few days later I decided to download the Bio Shock demo from XBOX Live to see what all the fuss was about. Ever since that fateful day, I have been hooked ever since. The demo showed much potential and I ended up purchasing it a week later.

Before you go thinking that this is "just another FPS", I am here to tell you it's not. It's the originality of this game that keeps me intrigued more than anything. First off while you have space to hold more guns that a real human being can carry, there is also a new element that I have not seen in any other FPS game that I have played. What I am referring to is "Plasmids", shortly in the game, after an incident with a syringe, you DNA is altered in a way that gives you many abilities and new attacks. The first skill you get is the electro bolt which does just that, allowing you to shoot an electric ball out of your hand to stun enemies and to also override malfunctioning door panels. There are many other skills including fire ball, winter blast and telekinesis which should be pretty self explanatory. These are not limited to combat abilities there are other "Tracks" that effect how fast you can hack a machine and the ability to auto-camouflage just to name a few.

In addition this game is not linear which is a flaw of many FPS's. You are pretty much able to go anywhere you want, and the various cabinets, bodies and ice are not just there for decoration, you can actually search them for money, bullets and other useful items. You can also melt ice with your fire plasmid.

The graphics in the game are good, but nothing like the graphics in Halo 3. This does not mean that the graphics are disappointing, quite the contrary; the way you and the other characters interact with the environment is quite realistic, if you walk under falling water you will see water run down the screen momentarily even slightly blurring your vision. If you burn enemies you will actually see their charred bodies smoking momentarily as your search their bodies for goodies. Even when equipping your winter blast tonic, your left hand will spurt blood as the icicles shoot through your skin. The only thing about the graphics that is not "top notch" is the up close detail of the characters. You will notice a little blockiness, but this does not hurt the game play at all.

Bio Shock is a creepy and suspenseful game, and a big reason is because of the sound. Having surround sound allows one to experience the game the way it was supposed to. Walking through the underwater city of Rapture, you will frequently hear the splicers chat with each other or even talking to themselves as they wander around. If they see you, they will occasionally sneak up behind you and you will be able to hear their footsteps creeping up from behind, only to turn around and see that they are not there, other times they will be right in your face trying to beat you to death with a bloody wrench.

The controls are well suited for this game and it only takes a couple of minutes to get used to the controls. One may find switching between weapons and/or tonics in the heat of battle to be a little bit cumbersome. However it is forgiving in that the game action pauses while you switch weapons, so there is no fumbling around on the analogue stick needed, just simply hold down RB or LB (for plasmids) and the game will let you make your selection in peace. Once you are done selecting, the game jumps back into action immediately without missing a beat.

The storyline is also miles ahead of any storyline in other FPS, and as you may already know, it takes place in the under water city of Rapture in the Atlantic Ocean. You will obviously notice by the environment that the story does not take place "now", instead its set around 1959 judging from the "Happy New Year" picture in one of the first levels in the game. This even adds more to originality of the game, usually when a FPS is set in the past it's a war game like COD or Medal of Honor. The reviewer, pattic that mentions that it has an "absorbing story" is absolutely correct. It is quite a refreshing twist on your typical FPS story and it's almost as enjoyable as the game itself; great job in this department.

In summary I really can't find anything wrong with this game that would warrant me giving this game any less than 5 stars in both categories. With all the hype surrounding Halo 3, this game may be unfairly overlooked; and while Halo 3 is also a very fun game, Bio Shock is one of those rare titles that come along every once in a while that raises the bar and blows everyone away with original game play and a great story to go along with it.

A must have if you want a break from your typical "shoot everything that moves" title.

Would you kindly purchase this game?

Bioshock is the best first person shooter of the year so far on Xbox 360 - definitely better than Halo 3 if you compare the campaign modes only, and edging out Rainbow Six Vegas by a small margin. Actually, it's more than just a first person shooter as it combines a lot of role playing game elements too to keep things interesting. The gameplay mechanic is flawless, the graphics/audio are stunning (MUCH better than Halo 3 FYI), and the story line is like the best sci-fi horror - intriguing and disturbing at the same time. My only complaint hence the 4 star review instead of 5 stars is that the game has limited replay value once you've completed the campaign mode twice (10-15 hours each play though). I did play it through a third time maxing out my splicer research but I can't see how I can play it a fourth time any differently. I hope 2K release some expansion packs or something via Xbox Live to extend our visit to Rapture. However, the designers must be commended on producing one of the best single player experiences so far (well until Half-Life Orange Box comes out!!). If you haven't already experienced this game, you should. Now would you kindly purchase this game?

Very well done, must play this at least once

There are so many games who have not taken the kind of time, care and effort to put as much style, gameplay, action and creativity into a game like Bioshock. If you enjoy FPS you MUST play through this game at least once. I enjoyed it so much, I played through it again on a higher difficulty level once I finished it once. Well worth the time and money!

Most Overrated Game of the Year

When selecting a video game the first thing I look for is !!NOT!! a good story. The only place a good story has in a game is the one that evolves through the actual gameplay itself. If I'm seeking a good story I read an actual book. I'm belaboring this point because it seems like the "story" is one of the main reasons people go crazy for this title. Along with the emphasis on story Bioshock contains other RPG elements such as upgradeable "magic" and weapons capabilities, as well as an extensive inventory of more or less useful items. The graphics and sound are nice, but the actual gameplay leaves much to be desired. I had read all the incredible reviews so I finally purchased the game used. After playing it for a couple days I was so disappointed that I returned it to the store. As I mentioned earlier, fans of the RPG genre could very possibly find an enjoyable experience here. Then on the other hand if it's a first person shooter that you're after, best look elsewhere. The combat lacked sophistication and was obviously not first priority for Bioshock's designers. The game contains an abundance of text and narration which has no or very little function in moving you through the game. Upon backtracking through areas (which you'll do frequently) enemies regenerate as do various obtainable items scattered all around. This was a major drawback in that you make no lasting impact on the environment which detracts from the illusion of an immersive experience. Bioshock is a mishmash of styles that ultimately left me unsatisfied on all counts.
