This game basically steps it up for realistics shooters. Hit cover, blindfire, and reload just right to take out your enemies. Graphics are superb and campaigns great, but the only downfall of campaign is it leaves a little to be explained. Multiplayer play is unrivaled on the 360. If you dont have this game and have a 360 i highly recommend getting it, game of the year for sure.
A new evolutionary step in Third Person Shooters, and video games in general

I do not understand why some people are bashing Gears of War. Sure, its another Third Person Shooter, and we all know that we have hundreds of Third Person Shooters(TPS) to choose from on the market.
But, Gears of War is to TPS as Miles Davis was to Jazz. Gears of War re-defines the FPS genre in ways that are innovative and generate massive amounts of fun in the process.
Lets take some innovations from the game and see where they stack up in our already swarming world of TPS games.
The Roadie Run: This is a very unique run. When you enter the run mode, the camera drops down to about knee level and gets very shaky a la wartime movie style. You cannot shoot while running and vision is limited, but you can evade enemies and escape incoming fire.
The Active Reload: Ok, I have never ever played another game where if you time your reloading perfectly you can get a damage boost. Maybe there is another game out there that has this, but I haven't played it. This adds so much to multiplayer and even the campaign game.
"Bleed out" time: In execution mode in a multiplayer match, if you take sufficient enough damage, you will fall to your knees, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. If you rapidly tap A button you can slowly revive yourself before your character dies from blood loss, however usually an opposing player will have already stomped on your head or blown your head to bits.
Ammo situation: Unlike shooter games, Gears of War does not shower you with ammo. Instead you either have to grab what is available(which is not much), aim carefully(!), and grab whatever your kill leaves behind. Even in campaign mode, it is very possible to run out of ammo.
Tactical movements: In both modes of Gears of War (Campaign and Multiplayer), taking cover and being evasive has many advantages. You certainly can go all out and charge the enemy, but that will most likely render you on your knees, ready to be curb-stomped by your adversary. You can hide behind virtually everything, and you also have a run move where your character runs in a sort of crouching position, making you harder to hit and see. Utilizing tactical movements, and your team increases your chances of winning.
Curb-stomp: If you get your opponent to their knees, in campaign or multiplayer(execution mode), you can curb stomp them, which involves smashing their head under your foot. Its a great way to finish off an enemy.
Life gauge: There is no on screen life gauge like in most other TPS'. Instead when you take damage, a red cog appears on the screen indicating your status. The more defined and the more red your cog is, the closer you are to death. However, if you manage to escape a battle and hide away, you will automatically heal.
And, not so original is the behind-the-character point of view. However, this only enhances the game, as everything seems more fluid. I am guessing that the designers did this on purpose, to show off the amazing character models that they created. Another not so original addition, though very awesome and certainly enhancing the game, is impact of bullets to the characters bodies. If you shoot an enemy in the arm or leg, it doesn't really do much to hurt or hinder them. Shoot them in the torso and it takes more damage off. Shoot them in the head, and they are a goner (depending on how far/close you are and what weapon you are wielding).
Ok, now onto the graphics.
The graphics are by far the best achievement in graphical enhancement that I have ever seen in a video game, period!
They got so detailed in this games graphic design, that you can see individual hairs on the human characters heads, their neck and arm muscles, the deep detail in their body armor (the body armor looks truly amazing and very cool), and amazingly detailed environments. Glass reflects light in a very realistic way, as do characters. Brick walls look like, brick walls! Even up close! There ain't no trickery here, everything looks amazing up close as it does far away. Buildings look very realistic, as do each character model. There are even facial expressions!
Gears of War is THE most realistic looking game I have ever played!
A lot of detail and time went into the graphics, and it shows. You will be hard pressed to find a game with better graphics (maybe Halo 3). Everytime I play this game I am amazed and astounded at the graphics. EVERY TIME!
Character models move very smooth-like, and their animations are incredible, especially reloading. Shooters have been around for a long time, but killing enemies has NEVER looked this good!
The sound is very realistic as well. From reloading, buildings being blown apart, to the sound of a characters head or body parts being blown to bits, it all sounds amazingly real, or at least what I imagine it would sound like. When you run over body parts scattered across the ground, you are treated to a squishy sound that is really cool sounding. Reloading a weapon sounds really, really cool. Especially the sniper rifle. Bullet casings ting when they hit the ground. When a member of the COG team runs, you can hear their armor shaking around. Characters breath hard when they run too. When a character makes an active reload, they say a particular saying. The sayings vary with each character. When you kill someone your character may make a comment as well. When frag grenades go off, or when the unique Torque Bow arrows explode, you are treated to the sound of rubble flying against the environment. Overall, the sound does very, very well with immersion and you really feel like you are in the middle of an intense war.
The only gripe that I could find with this game, is that the campaign mode is short. However playing it on Hardcore and Insane really draws the firefights out considerably.
But what you have to realize, is that Gears of War was always meant to be enjoyed as a multiplayer game. The campaign mode is merely practice for what lies ahead on XBOX Live (the real meat of this game). Playing against other real players makes the game so much better, and more challenging. Death Matches get pretty hardcore. The coolest thing about it, is the team deathmatch aspect. You can work together with up to three other people to co-ordinate attacks and bail eachother out of trouble.
There are a few varying modes of LIVE play, and they are all fun, though they all basically boil down to being "shoot the other team and survive" mentality.
One annoying thing about the LIVE aspect of this game, is the competition that arises due to the fact that kills and wins toss you up onto the leaderboard and you can even get achievements for certain weapons. This leads to rather selfish behavior and playing with people who get really angry and upset when they don't win, not to mention those that play the game strictly for achievement hunting. Thanfully Epic added a Ranked version of Online and a Causal version of online. In Ranked mode, kills, wins and losses are tracked (this is where the aggressive and annoying players are), in the casual matches, called (player modes), kills don't amount to anything but its all about fun.
Despite the negative things about this game, the live playing is TOP NOTCH and very addicting, especially if you end up playing with a team that actually works as a team.
Gears of War has literally changed the way games will be looked at for all future releases. It has set the bar very high, almost too high for shooters across all platforms. I've played the Halo 3 Beta, I've rocked Shadowrun (which is very fun by the way), I've played Prey and Perfect Dark Zero, and I have to say that NONE of these games bring to the table what Gears of War does. In terms of graphics - Gears is top of the line, in terms of game play (at least online) - Gears of War is the top of the ladder. In terms of an all around amazing product - you guessed it, Gears of War comes out on top.
The cover system and the roadie run add so much to your strategy that it is really hard to play shooters that do not offer this. Being able to hug concrete and walls galore adds stealth and the roadie run adds evasion. The Third person view is also much better than the common First Person view. I prefer the Third Person View personally, you have a better field of vision.
Seriously, if you own an XBOX but are unsure about this game, stop being unsure! Pick it up! You will not regret it!
Not just a Halo appetizer

This game is awesome! Seems as if the creators were big fans of the terran campaign in StarCraft: Brood War. My first look at this game brought back the same feelings as seeing Mario 64 for the first time (in terms of graphics). Stunning!
Gameplay is very engaging. Its unique style of duck and cover tactics sets it apart from the rest. A large part of this game is learning how to maneuver your character around your surroundings and finding proper cover. The controls can be a little frustrating at first, but they soon become second nature.
THE game for anyone looking for a uniquely styled shooter or anyone that wants to show off the capabilities of their machine.
BLOODY Masterpiece

the first time i played this game was on live and before i knew it there was a chainsaw going through my head and my screen was completley covered with my brains and guts and i was hooked. after playing live for a a few weeks i started the campaign and oh man the graphics and story really draw you in. what is so great is the game is so lifelike, when going through a dark room or building and something jumps out at you don't be ashamed if you scream like a little girl ( i did). i definetly give this game a 10 and highly recommend getting or atleast renting. thanks for reading
Pure fun

If you haven't heard the buzz about this game already then you are probably living under a rock.
Pick it up for a fun single and co-op game. Although not too long, you will fully enjoy it!

lol. I got into the Gears of War craze LATE... but i luv this game so much. I'm grabbing Gears of War 2 the DAY it gets released.
Story unfolds well. Game play is SWEET. I luv the "duck and cover and shoot" aspect. Reminds me of playing paintball. :)
I RPG sometimes. I'm GMing a StarWars game with Clone Troopers. I've already stolen the game plot to use on the group. OH the PAIN they will have fighting "locusts!" lol
almost perfect

Gears of War is a very cool game and I highly recommend purchasing it. It's not particularly deep but the characters, storyline, and graphics are great. The action flows nicely and there were a couple parts that were so challenging that I had to have my wife co-op in. I was also impressed by the game's use of cover, which is effective and unique. The only flaw I found is that if you select a left handed control scheme you limit your ability to run while ducking. I'm looking forward to Gears of War 2.
Easy but fun.

Now, I played Halo 3 before I played this game, so did a backwards comparison of the games. Gears was much easier than Halo, as it was a "move forward and don't die" game. But, half way through, I found myself addicted to the game, even changing my gamer tag on XboxLive to the Gears skull symbol. After finishing the game, it had a terrible ending, but I can't wait for Gears 2 this November.
A must have!

If you're reading these reviews online, there is a good chance you are torn between getting Gears of War or Halo 3. They constantly get compared to each other since they are similar in many ways. And really you can't go wrong with either of them. But if I had to choose and can only get one, I would take Halo... Let's Compare.
As you've probably heard, the graphics on Gears are phenomenal. Nothing beats it to this point. There's a destructive environment, the sounds are very realisitc. You really feel immersed in the game. These features make the campaign mode exciting and intense, much better than Halo 3's campaign mode.
However, where Gears fails to match wits with Halo is in the online matchmaking mode. The Gears of War online mode is awful! They only have three game modes and it takes a long time to set up an online match.
The worst part of it is that there are no skill levels! I kept getting matched up against nerdy kids and college burnouts who play this game non-stop. I didn't stand a chance. I got extremely frustrated with the online mode for that reason. Overall, I beat the campaign in a week and then hardly touched the game afer that.
However, with Halo, the online mode is so well done that I played the game for months even though on the surface Gears looks better. With Halo 3 you are matched up with players of your skill level so you never feel overwhelmed. That way the game remains fun and challenging but not challenging to the point where you want to throw your controller through the TV screen.
If you got the money for both, get em both. But if you can only spring for one, go with Halo.
