Great Way to Waste A Little Time

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2
Date: December 22, 2007

My four year old loves this game. It's a fun way to waste a few minutes waiting for a table at the restaurant or a little bit of down time before bed. While sometimes I find it frustrating (it can be a little less than sensitive to some of the stylus movements), in most cases it is intuitive and fun to create little meals.

I also think that it is a bonus that you always `win'. Mama may get annoyed and tell you that you failed through burning eyes at each step, but if you make it through all the steps to make the meal than the meal gets `finished' and you see the final plate. This works well for my daughter who does not quite understand the grading system. When she goes to bed, I work at earning those gold medals!

It is what it is. I wouldn't expect to become so engrossed in that you simply can't walk away, but I would expect a fun game that is appropriate for a wide range of ages and skill levels.

Fun, but don't overplay it or it gets boring

This is really fun! You can cook tons of both weird food, and normal food. But I'm warning you, if you play it too much, it can get really boring, really quickly. If you're looking for a fun game for the Nintendo DS, then I suggest buying this game.

No so much, Mama.

"Cooking Mama" is overall...OK. It's a little slow and it can ruin your touch screen if you are not careful. I would recommend getting a cover for the touchscreen before you play this game!
The music is annoying after an hour of playing but I have learned how to make a few new recipes. Some of the recipes seem a bit off from what I would make in real life but I am tempted to try some of the recipies in my own kitchen some day!

I only played the game for about 2 days and then my boyfriend has played it more than me. It's not an exciting game or something that I would recommend to everyone. I was a little disappointed by the game. Don't expect anything spectacular with Cooking Mama! It's a good game to add to your collection and gets you used to the touchscreen.

One of my nine year old triplets got this from Santa. She really likes to cook. She loves this game! Out of all the games they got, the two girls like this one the best! I have even found myself playing it :0)

Its okay

Its okay....it gets a little too repetative for me, but I still play it.. Not as good as I though it was going to be though..

Not for lefties!

I had read previous reviews about this game and noted that people had commented that the game isn't very left-handed friendly, though some reviews said otherwise. I decided to go ahead and try it out because the game itself looked intriguing. The majority of reviews were right--this game isn't for lefties! The set-up of the kitchen and the direction that items need to be added or moved or chopped is all completely backwards and at times difficult to maneuver with the stylus in the left-hand. As a lefty I am used to this but I was hoping for something a little better.

As for game play, the game is OK. The graphics aren't much and the mini-games get repetitive very, very quickly, however the game itself is addicting. If it weren't for the bronze, silver, and gold coins awarded based on performance, I would have stopped playing this a long time ago (and I just got the game yesterday).

I see this game being good for young children as it (and other DS games) develop fine motor skills used for writing (though some reading is required). I can see how younger children (7-13 or so) would love this game.

Game too picky about stylus movements to be fun

I love to watch to food network, so I thought this game would be a fun way to bring that to the ds. What I found was that although my screen was clean, and I was using an almost new stylus, the ds had a hard time registering when I would peel the carrots or potatoes. It became more frustrating as I would try to do other things (trim the fat from meat, cut lines, whatever required an exact mark,)and it acted like the stylus wasn't even being used. I had my husband try it, thinking maybe I was just the one with issues. He agreed that it was a bummer game. We finally resorted to just doing the practice sessions so that if it didn't recognize the movement we could try it over...and over...and over without Mama flaming her eyes at us. Yes, she gives you a "burning eyes" glare when you mess up. I play a lot of video games, so I'm not some novice trying out my first touch screen. Maybe other people are having better experiences, but I can only give it a single star. I sure do hope that Cake Mania will be better. It'll be a different kind of cooking game, but I'm sure it'll be a whole lot more fun.

Fun while it lasts

Cooking Mama is a fun little game and I admit my most-awaited game of 2006. Sadly, the game didn't live up to my expectations.

The game is a collection of cooking-based minigames. Or, rather, quasicooking. You don't actually learn to cook anything (besides maybe making a sandwich, one of the few things I already know how to do).

Second, it gets repetitive rather quickly. The recipes are varied but a lot of them are just duplicates, with one having a different kind of sauce. It doesn't exactly make you want to finish all of the game.

Third, the game claims you can "combine recipes" as you wish and then get graded on them. In my mind, if I combine a lasagna and a pizza, I'd have a pizza with delicious lasagna toppings. What you actually do is make a lasagna and then make a pizza. My hopes of delicious and unconventional ice cream dumplings melted like French Vanilla in a wok. There would be no Iron Chef-styled critiques of my brave and bold mixtures by Mama.

Fourth, there is absolutely zero multiplayer in this. When things get dull, it always livens things up to have another person around, doing the same thing as you. In this case, that's not really possible.

Sure, the game is only $20, but the collection of mini-games in New Super Mario Bros. far outpass this in depth and variety AND that game has an extensive single-player mode.

I wouldn't avoid it, but I also wouldn't recommend it. My hope is that some of these things are rectified in the Wii sequel.

Nothing But a Gimmick

I bought this game with a lot of enthusiasm, because I love games like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. The box description reminded me of reading the back of Animal Crossing: "So basically you just walk around a town...it can't be THAT fun, can it??" But it really was. So when I read that all you do in Cooking Mama is make different foods, I figured it would work the same way as similar games with simple plot descriptions.
However...in this case, the box really says it all. First off, there is NO PLOT. None at all. I mean, even Mama is unexplained. You turn on the game, press start, and pick something to cook. At first this is cute and fun, but the entire thing is so one-dimensional that anybody over age 8 ought to lose interest in a couple of days.
Yeah, you get to use the stylus. And that's really innovative. But how many times do you have to go through the same steps in different recipes before this gimmick stops pulling the weight of the entire game? Because it would be one thing if every recipe is different. But there are about 70 recipes and only around 20 different abilites. You have to measure water for a LOT of different recipes, and this gets old really quickly. I kept waiting for something new to emerge, but now that I've completed all of the listed recipes and nothing has changed, I'm really disappointed. Couldn't they have had you enter a cooking competition at this point? Couldn't Mama give you some more difficult recipes? There's just not enough to it.
In conclusion, this game is great for kids, wretched for most teens and adults.

cooking mama is one of the games i was excited about getting for my ds lite since i love anything associated with food. so, i thought this would be a cool game to have and play. the stylus is your handy dandy kitchen tool that you use to add, cut, pour, slice, stir the ingredients and adjust cooking temperatures. there are different little dishes to choose and make. the game is easy...follow the directions and make sure you complete the tasks within the given time. try not to burn or spill anything. it's a very cute and fun game.

current goal: to be the cooking mama master.
future goal: get a regular time slot for a show on the food network.
