I have been an avid strategy gamer since the days of Dune 2000, Warcraft I, and the original Command & Conquer. I have extensively played the most popular RTS games out there, such as Warcraft II and III, all Command & Conquer titles (with expansions), Starcraft, and Brood War. However, after playing all these both online and single player, I have to say that C&C: Generals is a contender for the best RTS I have ever played.
The graphics engine has vastly improved from Red Alert 2, and it is now on par with (if not better than) Warcraft III, bragging fantastically detailed 3D units and buildings. The size scale has also been realistically altered, so that now tanks are considerably larger than infantry, and buildings are considerably larger than tanks. The game uses a Warcraft-like bottom-of-the-screen command bar, which is an improvement from the right side command bar. The flashy FMVs have been replaced with cinematic in-game scenes (again, like WCIII!) which are very well done. You'll notice a few Matrix-style slowdowns and freezes in order to capture the action in these cutscenes.
The game is fairly realistic, taking place a few decades from modern times. The sides are the USA, GLA (Global Liberation Army, terrorists), and China. Each side is relatively balanced and vastly different in their strategy. The USA has a huge airforce and is technologically superior to the other two sides. China has strength in numbers and its units get bonuses when grouped, but it also has several unique technologies such as nuclear siege weapons and flame tanks. The GLA excels in hit & run technology, boasting such units as Bomb Trucks and Terrorists (suicide bombers) and several vehicles that use enemy parts to upgrade themselves.
While some may find the campaign a bit drab compared to other games, I found it very enjoyable and realistic. The difficulty is challenging, and there are many quirks that make it even more fun, such as reinforcements coming in by train and POWs that need to be rescued. However, if you play Skirmishes, or standalone battles, you will find yourself occupied for many hours. Online play uses a matchmaking system, and a world builder utility is included with the game, so you are practically guaranteed many sleepless nights of campaigns.
There are plenty of other features that make the game worth playing, such as the General system, but I need not say more. You won't be disappointed if you like strategy!

I recommend this RTS game to anyone who would like a very good strategy game. The ability to play different sides that all have special weapons and units. Chinese have powerful tanks and nuclear weapons. USA has airforce power. GLA focus on stealth, explosives and biological. The GLA is a group of people that are considered Terrorists, they do NOT have a country to defend they are a global liberation, they think everyone should follow a certain living path. They also have some of the funniest comments

Its a basic rts game, stragetic is not requried as it boils down to over running the enemy base with tanks or whatnot, there is not point in trying to be tatical, i.e hidden troops and stuff as it the computer AI, is great at cheating and will know where you are, who you are and what kind of sweaty gamer you are, be warned THEY KNOW YOU!!!
Well ok, maybe not that much, but ya know what i mean!
The missions are straightforward and simple, get from point a to b, destroy c. Occasionally there are missions with no base for you which i guess requires some logic in completing the level, basically there'l be 3 routes, choose route B and die, choose route C barely make it, choose route A for survival, you know.
The game is predictable and the movie sequences, dull boring and repititive, much like the gameplay.
However it is still fun to play, especially in multiplayer, where i was able to go on the hardest mode against multiple enemys and still win. Its funny being America and fighting america etc. You'll get lots of satisfaction about going the GLA and being somewhat sneaky in your fighting. Even more enjoyable is how easy it is to defend your base and build 9 nuclear missiles (each group has there special nasty weapon, to then release 9 missiles of nuclear devasatation on a big build of the enemys troops. (all they do is clump together), sheesh.
Other good factors are the point system, you gain expierances and have access to special attacks, like parachuting troops and whatnot, whilst troops and tanks gain expierance fighting the tyrany of their enemies.
This game is nothing without the exspansion pack, if you loved playing the multiplayer mode for the humouros effect, then you'll love having a level 3 star autogun macine (chinese) trooper take out a tank or even a friggan overlord, or sending atleast 50 suicide motorbikest into the enemies base.
((Lots of people think this game is racist, its a game, nothing more nothing less. it uses sterotypical views on different ethnic groups, americans, chinese, 'terrorist'. Ok, we know not all terrorist where balaclavas and their leaders torture prisioners, pfft. if people have to rant about the ethnic rights of this game (kinda like i am ¬.¬) then its pretty sad, enjoy the average game.
Very Entertaining!!!

Well Bonjour, everyone! I come here all the time to read the reviews before I actually go and buy the game. Some how my friends telling me "That game rocks" just isn't convincing enough. So now I thought I'd drop a few lines about C&C Generals. Well like the other respected reviewrs have said, this game is more like Warcraft than it is like C&C. So if your a die-hard C&C phsyco fan, then you might want to sharpen your butcher knife before purchasing this, because you're going on a killling spree accross the nation angry that they've changed your favourite game. As for everyone else, well go buy a couple gallongs of coffee and barraciade yourself in your room with your computer, because you're not coming out for months. Wait....what..? Oh well moving on. Oh first of I DO NOT think that this game is violent at all. Soldiers DON'T burst like tomatoes. And if you think that watching a terrorsit jeeo flying through the sky in a blaze, performing some first class aerobatic manuevers, is violent well then I honestly don't think that C&C is the right tittle for you. I'd suggest something from the Barbie brand. Barbie beach party if you want to walk on the wild side and take it to the max. Back to the game. It is very realistic. Your structures actually look like buildings and not Picaso's, like they did in RA2. All units, and buildings, are now finally to scale. That is you don't have any giraffe sized Micheal Jordans walking around tripping over your tanks. And now tanks are actually TANKS. They take it like a tank. Hostile fire that is. So you DO NOT have to worry about a small band of Malibu's badboys, armed to the teeth with slingshots and high-hopes, terrorizing your arsenal. Um...The battles are just fantabulous. They are straight to the action, no kissing and hugging. Explosions everywhere, bulets ans shells whistling by. Missles trying to get into the acton too. But most of all it is amasing to watch soldiers die. They like to perform little dancing ensembles before they pass they heritage on to the next generation. One time I killed this rocketlauncher weilding Rambo and it looked like he was going to throw his rocketlauncher at one fo my units. I was like whoa, hold it James Bond, no need for heroes. Oh and another thing, this game is set about 20 years from now, and it is very plausible. Like the untis don't seem to advanced from tdays units. Some do have some extra features (on which the U.S. military is working on today, like remote control spy-planes). I mean just think of the technology we had 20 years ago. Just of computers and video games. Tetris was probably the most extreme game out there. Rated: R, scenes of extreme nudity, the vertical, long blocks might arrouse some individuals. Back to Generals. This game is not to far-fetched, unlike RA2. Where they had derigables(kirov airships) and laser tanks. Now I wounder, what year was that? Were they trying to reanact the Hindenburg situation on a larger scale? Anywho, Um...have any of you seen the 2001 movie "Black Hawk Down"? Well if you have then you probably have notcied that Samolian resistance have been using those low-rider pick-up trucks with a machinegune mounted in the back. Well guess what...this game has those! They are weak but inexpensive and quick to produce. And they will drive you insane! But then again nothing beats watching one of those flipping over in the air, flying accross the screen in flames, while the machinegunner is practising his 3m springboard biving routine. Well tha about covers it. I'd like to thank all my sponcers; my mom's apple pie, my mom's tomato soup. Oh and my mom's chocolate chip cookies. Well, Bon soir.
Stan, you crack me up!

RA2:YR is probably my favorite game ever. I have played every C&C game since the first one. I even used to play the original Dune 2, which is what C&C was based on. This is the first C&C game to disappoint me. It was changed too much. Gameplay is just not up to par. C&C:Renegade isn't good either. I hope this trend doesn't continue. :(

"I Love this game",If you want a fast pace, adrenalin pumping, fast thinking RTS look no further. Generals is it! USA,China, and GLA all ready to battle it out on your PC.(There are three different covers you can buy, I suggest you pick up the USA cover, it has the best detail as well as being the best side in the game.)
EA ruined it!

The 3D looks good, but you need a super computer to play this. Why not keep it simple? It's the gameplay that counts, not flashy buildings.
The interface BLOWS! The little decorative designs around the interface should have been removed to reveal more vital screen. Unless you have a fast computer with a nice video card, you're stuck with low resolutions, leaving you with a narrow view of the battlefield.
Also, it's incredibly buggy. And I miss the signature cheesy FMVs. Instead, we get slow realtime cinematics that can't be skipped.
A final word. EA, BUG OUT! Westwood had a great franchise, now EA ruined it.
This game bites the dust. I'm ashamed of EA.

This game is a definate dissapointment, i've played some of the early C&C games, the most recent being Tiberiun Sun and Red Alert 2. In both you were engaged in a great and thought out story line in which you were face to face with great and familiar actors. And thats why i bought this gam,e not for multiplayer(although i was planning on playing multiplayer) and yet there no story line what so ever. You go mission by mission with a loading screen that says
- Many comrades have fallen
- Take out enemy so and so
- Then destroy so and so
I was looking forward to seeing amazong cut scened of MiGs striking down enemy scud launchers and working with the President in taking out an enemy terrorist threat. Now i'm not gonna sit here and downplay the entire game, the single player missions are nthought out and well made, but the campaigns are short as far as i know don't have an auotmatic save, what i mean by this is if you leave while at mission 5 expecting to see a list of all the mission on which you can select the on you wanted to play, you wouldn't find one, i found this out the hard way about 4 missions into the U.S. campaign. So the next day when i decided to try multiplayer i entered my birth date, pass, nick ect. and hit create account only to find a scren pop-up every time saying "This password is incorrect". How can the freakin password be incorrect if it hasn't been made yet. I messed around with the password making sure to make alot of letters in case you need a certain amount, and tried only numbers and only letters and still nothing. So i've yet to play multiplayer and the this game hasn't kept me entertained for a week, guess i'll have to stick with starcraft and Westwood's Red Alert 2. And by the way don't get W3, its a maor dissapointment too.
BEST GAME EVER!!!!!

This is one of the best games ever! I have not played it but I am getting it very soon. I have read reviews, been to westood.com and looked at prices. For 40$ its cheap. It is the best part of the comand and conquer series. I love it. The only thing that is confusing is the expansion pack. There are new weapons like: tomahawk missles, avengers, chinook, comanchee and much more. Instead of the old soviets there is the GLA. No allies, just usa, and China. I think china is the best because they have overlord tanks. They also have a dragon tank, inferno cannon, gattling tank, troop crawler, and MIG's. The GLA has a few good units too. They include:combat cycle, battle bus, terrorists, rocket buggy, bomb truck, quad cannon, toxin tractor, and radar van. In conclusion this is just the best real-time strategy game ever! There's nothin' better!
