Excellent expansion up to Game of the Year

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

If you loved Call of Duty you're likely to enjoy the expansion pack, maybe even love it. It's more of the same and in this case that's a good thing, after all some game sites declared the original Call of Duty `Game of the Year'. There are, however, a few distractions that drop the expansion pack a level or two below its famous parent.

Spawning enemies. At many locations in the game the Nazi enemies will continue to pour from the hills or buildings or wherever without end, ceaselessly and remorselessly as if there were a Nazi producing assembly line. A dirty little secret of the game is that sometimes you're supposed to advance on an enemy position and sometimes you aren't. It's pre-scripted. The designers deal with an unscripted advance by ripping your character to shreds with gunfire. At some point you'll find yourself trying to judge whether or not an enemy position spawns enemies or not in order to figure out whether to advance. If it's a spawning enemy position you'll need to advance or else run completely out of ammo. Non-spawning means you have to take out the enemies before advancing. Judging whether or not the enemy is spawning definitely breaks the illusion of the game. It's also tiresome and cheap.

One of my least favorite scenarios in the original Call of Duty was the ones where you protect your position against an overwhelming advancing force. United Offensive is full of these and some are HARD. Anyone playing the original Call of Duty should remember the bridge scenario where you had to defend against endless advancing soldiers coming from all directions. It was my LEAST favorite scenario. The expansion pack features a pile of new ones. It does help somewhat that the game includes more save spots.

The beginning and ending were duds particularly the ending where you protect a generic train station and then the game suddenly ends. Still, it's Call of Duty and it's a load of fun. There are some fun sniper scenarios and some great house to house assaults and lots of Nazi's. The good definitely outweigh the bad if you can get past some mind numbingly difficult section. The game was actually longer than I expected and could have passed for a full game.

Best WWII game ever made

This is one of the best games I've ever played. It is very hard at some parts but never gets boring. You start out in the Battle of the Buldge, playing as Pvt. Riley of the 101st Airborne in the U.S. Army. This is the most fun you'll have in this game. Battle of the Buldge is very long but never gets to that point where you say "is this over yet?" Next is the Great Britain campaign. This starts out very fun as you are a gunner named James Doyle in a B-17 bomber (That was givin to you from the Americans). You later crash and get rescued from a German patrol by major Ingram (the guy you save in COD and they don't do anything with him for the rest of the game). Later you become part of the S.O.E and help clear the way for Operation Husky (Invasion of Sicily). Next you are Yuri in the Russian Army. This is the loudest part of the whole game. It may get laggy in this campaign but it's all worth it when you're in the middle of the Battle of Kurst. This campaign is just as fun or maybe more fun than the Battle of the Buldge. If you buy this you will not be dissapointed at all.

You are not alone and it shows!

Even if this expansion pack was not developped by the same company that did the original Call of duty, the same level of quality is present.

The atmosphere in this game is so intense, the sounds and the surroundings so realistic, that you will lose contact with your real surroundings pretty fast. The American campaign begins at a fast and furious pace as you control the gun in a jeep, escaping various german vehicles and soldiers. Nothing new from a similar sequence in Call of Duty, but it is excellently done. In the final arc of that campaign, you will have to defend a château and waves after waves of germans are coming at you. You will feel exhilirated when you finish it.

The British campaign has you starting in a bomber, manning the different guns and shooting scores of planes. The rest of the campaign is at a slower pace than the American one but it is welcome because it won't let you go in the Russian part of the game.

You will participate in the battle of Kursk and the city is in complete ruins. You will also control a tank.
There is some problems that detract from the game but those are small. Why can't we jump over sandbags? The level are also a little linear but that is the price to pay for the cinematic experience that this game offer. The AI is excellent, if you patch the game to 1.51.

You must play this game. You will remember it for a long time.

Next Best Single Player Mission to HL2

Hey, this can run on a 32mb graphics card meaning if you have a high-end 64mb module or a 128mb you are going to be in for a good time. I ran it on a 256mb and it was astonishing. Nearly anyone with a somewhat recent PC can play this 1st person shooter and I am sure it will leave most happy that they did. Was it better than Medal of Honour: Allied Assault, as we have heard? Yeah, it is, but not by much, a margin maybe, but still anything that can live up to MOHAA surely can't be missed and COD:UO lives up to the hype.

The concept is the same as MOHAA except that there is more action, more high-octane moments, a different type of enemy AI and a lot more going on in terms of what you can pilot and drive in the story, although not freely but as part of the story. The game play certainly has the Cinematic intensity that it claims including various set pieces like a train bombing run, a lighthouse demolition, the Soviet offensive, all stunning to boot. It is not however HL2 graphics quality or anything close, but does offer a vast improvement over MOHAA, so in that respect is quite good, just nowhere near cutting edge. However COD:UO does have very convincing camera jitters and spectacular smoky explosions. The textures let it down a small bit but the environments and maps are genuinely war like all the way through and can not be faulted. The enemy AI and your own team AI can vary between very helpful and not so helpful but this depends on if you do your job or not. It is actually quite reliable. However, when your team take on an enemy the AI allows each to take multiple hits so that they eventually come into close combat and start hitting each other. This AI must be taken as is, even though slightly unrealistic, the game is not a war simulation but a 1st person war adventure and to be honest, does exactly what it says on the tin. So apart from the staged element, which actually ads to the game, it is more of an experience than a game you will turn to time and time again, however it is worth it for the experience of the single player mission alone.

I can not fault it much except to say that not enough air strike missions, weapons realism is not fantastic and the game was a little shorter than MOHAA (this is a 3 day game span) but to be honest I am only cribbing. The pandemonium of war is all here in a spectacular fashion because the story is a winner as you play a mini version of BAND OF BROTHERS as part 1 and then a mini version of ENEMY AT GATES in part 2. So WOW!

However when a new war simulation like OPERATION FLASHPOINT comes out for high end cards I know we will have the true war winner. Please bring on the real war simulator!

Pros:
- Play the two films mentioned above.
- Best new war game and 2nd best 1st person shooter.
- Awesome war atmosphere.
- Smoky explosions.
- Can run on a 32mb card!

Cons:
- 3 day lifespan.
- Weapons are not so realistic.
- Graphics are not 128mb worthy.
- We really need a new Operation Flashpoint with map editor!

Disappointingly SHORT!!!!!!!

All reviews before 9/16/2004 are worthless!

1ST of all, I don't know who these people are that post reviews before the game is even released but they should be completely ignored!!! Ego maniacs and know nothings wanting to prove they could do a review first I guess.

Basically, this is the same game you have come to love - COD but with new missions. Nothing is really mind blowing or must have about this expansion pack.

I bought this game on the 9/17/2004 at COMPUSA, installed it at 11PM on the 18th and within 4 hours on the 19th, I have finished the expansion pack.

I really feel ripped off. $30 down the tubes almost.

The missions are almost the same as before, infantry, blowing things up, driving a tank but some of the new battles are VERY fierce and challenging. You also get to play as a bomber gunner. There are some new weapons but nothing amazing. The flame thrower is cool but you really never get enough ammo or get the chance to use it under the right circumstances - like flushing out a bunker!!

The AI is the same. The graphics are the same. The mood/atmosphere is the same.
The missions are still VERY scripted. Your men will not move forward until you do, they get in the way and will not move and block your shots still! The tanks won't go forward until you take heavy machine guns out...even though the tanks should provide infantry with firepower!!!

Is this worth playing? YES. Is it worth $30.....barely.
I would have paid $50 if they had made it longer and more in depth. Why not? The engine is already developed, the bulk of the work is done, now all you have to do is build the levels. I mean...I was done in 4 hours, on the Veteran difficulty setting!!! If I had to choose between spending my money on DOOM 3 or this, I would choose COD:UO. DOOM 3 is scary and edgy...and that is all. After the first level or so, scary gets old and you start looking for a good gameplay. COD:UO might be short but atleast it was thrilling.

cock your guns, and shoot them up.

the good:
shoot them up fun is still there after all this time.
new modes like base assualt is a great addition.
better weapon as your kill count increases is a good idea though bad player may be frustrated.

the bad:
not enough new weapons or should I say awe-inspiring weapons.

It's still fun, but inevitably I wonder how long this can go on, mindless shooting with only some innovation. But heck, for now, this is a expansion pack worth having. good price on amazon, referred by http://www.whosave.com

Excellent follow up to COD

If you liked the original (COD) at all you should love this game (COD:UO). First of all the single player campaign is just as fun as COD if not more so. I still have that sense of "being there" in battle with this game but not quite as much as with COD. This could be because this campaign feels either shorter or more rushed than COD. I did feel that this campaign was more difficult than COD... one reason for that I think is that some of the missions involve many enemy soldiers. You'll see what I mean in the second or third mission into the campaign when you're fending off a German Assualt at the Battle of Bastogne. Very Intense!

The Multiplayer game is improved also with the addition of new weapons, tanks, ability to sprint, and new game types.

Overall I am very happy with this game and am looking forward to more... COD:Pacific maybe?!

Just Like I Said Before

Again, I'm not exaggerating when I give this 5 stars. As I loved the first set of call of duty maps, I loved the next set. I also liked the additions they made of weapon choices.
You have new maps like Cassino (similar to the Carentan map), Sicily, Foy (excellent for people who like to use tanks and jeeps), Italy, Stanjel, Berlin, Arnheim, Kursk, Rhinevalley, etc. Like I said before, there is a map for everyone and everyone will have some type of weapon that they choose to use often. As for weapons, there are now also satchel packs, CALS and other machine guns, smoke grenades, bazookas, etc. You are also enabled to drive tanks around as well as jeeps (and you can have others in the jeep and tank too). The graphics and detail are still good, and you also have the option of playing on the first set of maps before the expansion pack. You can still play single player, multiplayer deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, etc. You still have the option of choosing how you want to play (servers with rifles only, map rotation or repetitions, regular, etc). I can't even imagine what Call of Duty 2 will be like. "Expansion pack" really applies to this addition ebcause they didn't take away from the first set of maps but they only added...nothing is missing except there may be fewer older maps from the first set. In all seriousness I really don't have anything negative to say about the game at all. If you liked the first call of duty, no doubt get this one. If you like World War games, I really think you would like Call of Duty.

Its as good as the first Call of Duty.

Call of Duty: United Offensive Expansion Pack is as good as the first Call of Duty. Theres new weapons in it like the flamethrower and smoke granades. If you liked the first Call of Duty you should buy this. The first mission as a British soldier is really good. You have to defend a bomber while it goes on a bombing run. You can even walk around the bomber. It is a little harder than the first one.
