It Made My Kids Want To Play Real Tennis More!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4
Date: May 19, 2001
Author: Amazon User

Like many parents who played competitive (high school) tennis as a youth, I wanted to pass along my knowledge to my kids.

Although I had been teaching my son and daughter to play off-and-on for several years, they had progressed to only a moderate level of ability, mainly hitting groundstrokes from the backcourt.

Believe it or not, Mario Tennis has heightened their interest in tennis to a higher level than ever achieved by their dear old dad.

After playing complete matches (in both singles and doubles) on Mario Tennis, my kids' interest in the real game has been heightened tremendously. They now want to learn to serve, hit volleys and overheads -- and play real games while keeping score -- for the first time ever! (We've even played some doubles matches with my wife, and my kids knew where to stand without prompting.)

We now take our tennis equipment on vacation which, for me, is a dream come true.

Mario Tennis gave my kids an overview of the game which allowed them to better understand how the pieces (different strokes) fit together. It even taught them strategy (like hitting behind your opponent when he is moving in the other direction).

The only gripe I have about Mario Tennis is that all of the characters appear to serve in a kind of 3/4 overhand motion instead of coming right over the top. My son keeps insisting on serving as if he's hitting a high forehand. (But I'm just happy that he wants to learn.)

If you have any interest in wanting your kids to play tennis -- the real game -- get them Mario Tennis first.

Who would've guessed that a video game could make the real thing more enjoyable!

This game by camalot is great. It is very funny and addicting. Once you start playing you don't want to stop! Hitting the oppenet with the ball is funny to. Camalot did a smashing job!

Easy-to-learn, easy to lose-its-flavour: Rental.

I'm positive that whoever buys this game is going to enjoy it. They'll pop it in and, no sooner than three seconds, you'll be able to get past the star cup finals. Then, you'll try out the rings which are so much more strategic than simple back-and-forth tennis. Every so often, you'll take your luck at the Pirahna Plant challenge. You may never complete it, but it's still fun to try.

That sounds all fun and so, but what happens when you're all done? At one point in the game, you can easily beat the star cup tournament and you already have the only two hidden characters in the game. All that's left for you to do is test yourself against an insane computer. And, if you succeed, if you want to face something more challeging, you'll have to beat tournament mode for every character up to star cup and in BOTH singles and doubles.

Once you've started that cycle, the game loses its touch because it's the same thing over, and over. It's almost sad that it's so easy to learn. If it wasn't, you'd have something interesting to figure out.

So, if you want to have some Tennis Madness, rent the game. It was almost DESIGNED to be a rent-only game. Easy learning curve, gradual computer chalenges, fun multi-playing games... little reply value (due to the constant repetition), not inducing enough to want to get everything for every character (constant repetition). DO NOT BUY, RENT!

This game is so much fun! I rented it one night with some friends and we couldn't stop playing it! I never thought I would be playing a tennis game, but the creators of Mario Golf really know how to make the silliest sports game a party of fun. It has a lot of characters and a few unexpected ones such as Boo, which as a matter of fact is quite weird because he is categorized as a "tricky" player and he hits curve balls. There are "power", "tricky", "fast" and other characters and they all have their own advantages. Check it out

Best Tennis Game Ever

Mario Tennis certainly ranks up there with Virtua Tennis and Top Spin as the best tennis games of all time. With that said, let us take a look at what exactly makes this game so great. Well, with any sports games, the factor we have to take into account when analyzing its quality is its gameplay. Specifically, we want to know how well it emulates the sport. At first glance, Mario Tennis would not seem like a good tennis simulator. The controls are simplistic, and the characters are, well, Mario. Yet Camelot, who made Mario Golf, manages to put one over us. Despite the fact that you can perfect the controls in minutes, the game is deep. Ball physics are exceptional, and the type of court actually has an impact on the physics. Each player has his, her, or its own distinct feel. Movement in Mario Tennis feels more fluid than the more "realistic" tennis games, and this opens up the possibility for the development of strategy in your style. One complaint in the actual gameplay aspect of the game is the camera, but this is a flaw that plagues all tennis games. The court is split in halves, and one player/pair gets the bottom half and the camera behind them. This is infinitely better than being on the top half and having the camera facing them. It is possible to keep the camera behind you in single-player mode, but it can be a bother in multiplayer modes.

Like Mario Golf, Mario Tennis is chock full of various modes of play relating to tennis. I feel that the best one is the exhibition play, since that is the one best suited for multiplayer. It's just tennis, plain and simple. You can play a short game (1 set, 1 game) or a standard game (5 sets, first to 6 games). The latter length can get pretty tedious, especially if opponents are well matched. The Bowser match, however, feels underdeveloped. The items were supposed to be the key aspect of the Bowser match, but the rocking of the court seems to have a greater effect. The ring mode is better than ring mode in Mario Golf, since it is easier to aim, but there aren't that much incentives to play this mode. As far as single player mode, Piranha Challenge is super-cheap. Tournament mode, on the other hand, rocks. The game's standard 3 modes are okay. They range from extremely easy to challenging. However, definitely try to beat all three cups with everybody to open up the Star Tournament. Although the matches can get quite epic in length, these are definitely worth playing.

Okay. If you thought that you could get past this review without seeing a comparison with Mario Power Tennis...sorry to disappoint you. Many sport games can be separated into two forms: a more realistic sim-style game, or a less realistic arcade-style game. With improved battle modes and the flashy Power Shots, Mario Power Tennis is definitely more of an arcade-style game. So it all boils down to which type you prefer. MPT is just too insane for me. However, the graphics are definitely nicer than the somewhat blocky graphics in Mario Tennis for the N64.

Although limited, the voice samples are pretty good. The sound effects are well done, as each type of hit produces a different noise. The music is nice, generally falling under the easy-listening category. As far as replay value goes, even though multiplayer is fun, there gets to be a point (for some people) where it just gets old. Even so, Mario Tennis is still one of the best tennis games out there.

I usually cannot play games very well, but this one I am hooked on because it is so much fun. A friend of mine who has been playing video games all his life, and is a real pro thinks this game is fantastic also. I really recommend it because it is for all skill levels, and I think you can actually improve and win more as you play more.

First of all, I am not an avid tennis fan at all. However when I started to play Mario Tennis it became addicting. This is the coolest tennis game I have ever played. From overhead smashes to lobs and even dropshots, you can do a lot of things in this game that are fun. Playing with four other people is so fun. Each character has its own abilities and there are about ten characters. Boo and the turtle guy have tricky capabilities. There are a few speed characters like Yoshi and Baby Mario. My dad really loves this game too. We can have some great tennis matches in the middle of winter with this game. However there are only two hidden characters and this game is very easy. There are only three cups (tournaments) for each player and the first two cups - mushroom and flower - are a joke. They are simple. The last cup -star cup- gets a little bit tougher but it is still very easy. If you want a really fun tennis game that is really easy get this one.

Cool tennis game
