As funny as Mario Kart for SNES

This game keeps up the fun of Mario Classics, with a big bunch of characters playing against each other. You can choose Mario, Luigi, Daisy, Toad, Bowser, DK, Yoshi, Boo, Birdo, Shy Guy, Para Troopa, Wario, Waluigi, DK JR. It is a funny and hard game, if you choose to play against an intensive level cpu. As You advance Mushroom Cup(Hard Court), You can play Flower Cup(Saibro)and finally Star Cup(Grass). As you win the challenges new characters appear. You can still challenge yourself at Piranha Challenge, where a Piranha machine throw balls quickly against your side of the court, or ring challenge, trying to hit the rings on other side. Each character has a typical and unique style of play. Technique will be found in Waluigi or Shy Guy, Speed in Toad or Yoshi, Power in DK or Bowser, Tricks in Boo... Mario and Luigi are all around players. The game can be played in doubles, with 4 controllers or against computer. If you have a friend or a relative who likes challenge, it is a great oportunity to play together. I recommend this game to all ages.

The best tennis game featuring Mario, ever!

When I think of sports heroes, the three names that immediately spring to mind are, Tony Hawk, Anna Kournikova, and of course, Mario. Mario may have started his sports career as a lowly referee in the classic NES game, Punch Out, but he has now fought his way to the top in sports such as kart racing, golf, and now tennis. Now if you're like me (I feel your pain) you probably thought tennis was just for Europeans who couldn't understand baseball, but not so! Just like Mario Golf, Mario Tennis translates a sport with limited appeal into a game just about anyone could love. Mario Tennis features many different modes of play for your enjoyment. The most basic one is the exhibition mode. Exhibition mode is simply one match, (singles or doubles) with one to four human players. One handy addition here is how the game charts your successes in singles matches against the computer. The only gripe I have with that, is that at some point in the game you unlock a higher difficulty level to use in exhibition mode and the game doesn't distinguish a win at that level from the previous level. Then there is the Bowser Stage mode. This mode features, once again, a singles or doubles match with one to four players but with a twist. This time the court rocks back and forth as you play, and Mario Kart like power=ups are available, such as shells and mushrooms. To be honest, this mode felt pretty tacked on but it provides a fun, quick, break from long multiplayer sessions in plain exhibition mode. The other extra mode is called "the piranha plant challenge" and a challenge it is. Piranha plants spit 50 tennis balls at you and your job is to return everyone without your opponent hitting them back. Once again this feels tacked on but it's still a fun bonus. The third mini game is the ring challenge mode where you have to play basic tennis games but you must now concentrate on hitting the ball through rings. This mode is great, but the biggest time consumer of all is the Tournament Mode. Tournament mode has you playing through three tournament named, mushroom, flower, and star (just like Mario Kart). The Mushroom cup is laughingly simple and the flower cup isn't much harder but the star cup proves to be a real challenge. It will take even the most experienced player hours to get through all the tournaments with every character. But never fear, your efforts will be rewarded...in the form of three more tournaments... Whee! The graphics are about what you'd expect from a N64 game, which is a good or bad thing depending on your tastes. Actually, this game actually looks a little better than your average N64 game due to the complete lack of fog, (sure it's a tennis game but you gotta admit it's rare not to have any fog). It also helps that all the characters are bright and vibrant with very little blurriness. The visual presentation isn't perfect of course. The characters seem to have very small polygon counts. On many of the characters, such as toad, or birdo, you'll never really notice enough to care, but some characters, Donkey Kong in particular, have serious cases of the jaggies. There is also the issue of cuteness. Like all recent Mario games, Mario Tennis is enough to give you cavities, but luckily it's not as overbearing as Mario Golf, or Diddy Kong Racing. The folks at Nintendo pulled off the sound department well enough considering the cartridge format but neither the music nor the sound effects are anything to get excited about. The music is adequate, but there aren't any tunes you'll find yourself humming after playing. Mario Tennis uses the same technique of supplying tense music during match points that Tetris used way back in the day. The sound effects are also pretty decent with realistic effects when hitting the ball and various remarks and grunts from the characters. If it's replayability you're looking for, than Mario Tennis has more stuff to do than a Swiss army carnival. As mentioned before there are enough modes to keep anybody busy, not to mention six different tournaments and a whole slew of characters. Plus Nintendo has provided special ring tournaments available through codes available over the internet. Not a huge deal but it's interesting at least. The game also has a bunch of extra stuff available to unlock, such as two new characters (DK JR, and Shy Guy) and some new courts with different attributes. Mario Tennis is one of those rare games that is recommendable to everybody, not just tennis fans, not just Mario fans, but everybody. Sure it isn't perfect but there is unlimited replayability in the multiplayer modes alone. The four player doubles matches almost rival games like Super Smash Bros. and Perfect Dark in the simple fun department. In other words if you ever play multiplayer you must buy this now. Now all that it's missing is Anna Kournikova...

I was pleasantly surprised when I first played this game. I'm a big tennis fan, and the idea of playing singles with Mario vs. Luigi instead of Sampras vs. Agassi didn't exactly thrill me. My previous favorite tennis game was the outstanding Virtua Tennis for Sega Dreamcast. Surprisingly, Mario Tennis might be the more realistic of the two. Both Virtua Tennis and Mario Tennis feature simple two button control schemes, but Mario Tennis allows one to hit lobs, dropshots, top spin shots, slice shots, and overheads. Court surfaces have a much great impact on ball surfaces than in Virtua Tennis - this makes for very realistic matches. The player must alter his/her playing style depending on what surface they are playing, much like actual tennis players do. Despite the cutesy Mario characters, this game is great for older players, as they will appreciate the subtle additions that make the game so realistic. Younger players will appreciate the simple two button layout and familiar characters, making this a perfect game for all age groups. Overall, this is my favorite Nintendo 64 game to come out in a LONG while - I highly recommend you pick it up.

So much fun!

We love this game in our house! I am the mom of a little Nintendo dude and this is the only game that I enjoy playing out of our collection and the only one that I can win! It is just like real tennis, and there are so many great characters and court surfaces to choose from. Singles is fun, doubles is fun, the controls are easy to use, and the graphics are great. You can come up to the net and volley, hang back and hit groundies - the Waluigi character is hilarious to watch.

Kids will come to our house and say, "Tennis? Boring!" And then once they play it, they are hooked! They always want to play it first the next time they come over. Best Nintendo game yet.

COOL GAME!!!!!!!!!!

THIS GAME IS A MUST!!!!!! I RECOMMEND THIS GAME TO ALL VIDEO GAME FANS. There are two secret players. They are Shy Guy and DK Jr. To get them, you must beat the Tournament Mode on singles and doubles. For Singles, I would recommend Yoshi, Daisy or Boo. For doubles, I'd recommend Yoshi because he is so fast, and Baby Mario is a really good teammate.

Love at first serve

Knowing that Mario Tennis was coming from Camelot, the same company that made Mario Golf which I really liked, I knew that Mario Tennis was going to be excellent. When I first played the game, I had proven my hypothesis to be correct. I tried some practice rounds. The game wasn't very hard, but the graphics and details were simply dazzling, proving the game to be more than it was worth. When I started the championships, I got through the Mushroom Cup without a problem, but once I started the Flower Cup, the game got extremely difficult. The computer players knew exactly what they were doing and it only got harder in the Star Cup. I cannot get past my second match against Bowser(I was using Paratroopa for this cup) so I decided to try the special modes. The Bowser Court rocks back and forth with a making a great challenge, and an even greater challenge because of the items that were constantly floating around. I also soon learned that a doubles match is more fun than a singles match which is still excellent. The fact that you have another player helping you on the court, and more space to hit the ball resulted in different techniques and strategies. What made it more fun was the fact that there was less room to shoot past your opponents resulting in longer volleys. The Pirhana Plant Challenge is very difficult, and because there's also an opponent that can return your volleys, it can be almost absurd, but still, the challenge is well worth it and loads of fun. The object is to hit the balls back that the Pirhana Plants spit out AND get them past your opponent who isn't the smartest in the game, but can be very slippery with his movements. The Ring Challenge isn't exactly as difficult, but there are four different ways to play, with five levels for each. You have to get a certain amount of rings, and in some modes, there can be a timer. You can obtain the rings by starting a rally(Your opponent's shots through rings count too). All in all, this game is an unbelieveably spectacular work of detailed art, and the artists took their time in painting the picture. A great buy, and more than its worth.

Great for beginners and advanced gamers

I am a novice when it comes to video games, but this one is easy to get started in. I used to hate other tennis video games because they were so hard to play. But in no time with Mario Tennis, I was beating my friends who were experienced gamers. I have made it through the majority of the tournaments, but I still love to play. This is my favorite game of all, and I highly recommend it if you are looking for something easy to learn to put those of us less skilled at video games a chance against people who have been doing this stuff forever. Fun for one, and even better for more.

One of the best video games ever

Nintendo is a comany that emphasizes quality over quantity. While they may not always provide the best selection, you can always trust a game with "Mario" in the title. Even when the other half of the title is "Tennis."

How can this game be so great? It's all about simple pleasures. This game is easy to get into and hard to put down. The basic controls are very accessible, even to people who are unused to the analog control of today's 3D games. With no more than the control stick and two buttons, you can play truly complex games with a surprising level of realism. In fact, this game feels more like the actual sport than Sega's realistic-looking Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast.

This is a great game for non-gamers. It's not intimidating, it has no objectionable content, and the presentation is pleasantly cartoony without being too childish. For more experienced fans of video games, the first round of gameplay might seem too easy, but significant challenges await skilled players, and the highest levels of play are downright vicious. Persistent play will yield some secrets, too, so the experience is rewarding.

Finally, this is a great multiplayer game. My dad and I spent hours playing as a doubles team this summer, and the four-player mode is incredible. If you buy this game, make sure you have at least one extra controller.

This is Mario's best game ever!!!

At first I thoght tennis video games would be boring but I rented the game and it was awesome! It's challenging in a good way so you can beat it but not so easily. There are many different courts and modes to play in. If you beat the tournaments you get secret characters. Also, there are new characters in the game. They are Waluigi, Daisy, Paratroopa, Baby Mario, and Birdo. The game has great graphics and the instant replays are really fun to watch. This is really a great game.

Fun at a new level.

I bought Mario Tennis at the reccomendation of a friend who is a skilled gamer like myself. As soon as I plugged in the game I started to have fun. I actually missed a couple of shots from laughing so hard at listening to luigi cry when he loses. It is a nice release from the world of games I usally live in which are serious and take much skill. Don't get me wrong, though. Mario Tennis can be a challenging game to anyone when set on the intense setting of game play. All-Around it is a very fun game. Well worth the money because inthe end, it will pay off.
