Good, but more of a DirectX 9 platform for the mods.

I am a huge fan of battlefield 1942 and its mods, but have actually only had it since December so I was a bit overwhelmed when I saw this on store shelves. It is a much slicker game presentation wise, dripping with graphical and atmospherical details (U.S. radio DJ playing in base, glossy water, helicopter wind stirring on ground, to name a few). It brings a few new gameplay elements to the table with airliftable vehicles, movable spawn points, and multiple packs per role (engineer1, engineer2, sniper1, sniper2, etc.). Also coo is the ability to fire from the passenger seat of the jeep and the new 2- map "evolution" gametype. So what's not to love? I personally do not think that game has enough maps or vehicles, but that's okay. This game kind of ripped off mods Desert Combat and especially Edge of Destruction in some respects, but because they are user created mods that also is okay, if a pet peeve. The main problem that keeps one from enjoying this very enjoyable game that it is laggy as heck. This means that the framerate slows to a crawl on most servers, rendeing the game almost unplayable.
I would advise you to wait for a patch to come out before you buy this game, especially of you have a Radeon graphics card (bugs). I really do not think that the Vietnam war, which was somewhat infantry oriented, is very good bf material. Once mods like Dc and Gcmod (star wars) come out, I will be on this all day. Buy it now if you are a hardcore fan, otherwise wait until a patch comes out. Go! Go! Go!

Best Game Ever..................

This game shows many improvements over the good old BF1942. I've seen alot of people complaining about it though. Poor graphics, hard to control vehicles, overpowering, blah blah blah. Let me tell you that you do need a fairly good graphics car dot play it and a rather good computer. Basically an Alienware Computer. Even on low graphics tho this game still rocks.

BF-1942 die-hard now a convert to BF Vietnam

First of all, if your computer is LESS than a 2GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, SB Live, Nvidia Geforce4 4200Ti w/128MB, then don't bother with this game -- you WILL be disappointed. It will be too slow for you and look bad. This game is EXTREMELY hardware intensive and you REALLY need the 128MB or more on your high-end video card. Also, don't bother if you don't play multiplayer. The single-player mode is worthless. If you think this game sucks, chances are your PC does.
All that aside, this game ROCKS! If you have an up-to-date system, and a cable or DSL connection, then you will love this game. This game IS NOT Battlefield 1942. It is completely different game. The graphics and textures look great. The sounds effects are terrific! You can here the bullets wizzing through the cover and brush. The cover is great, this game is a sniper's dream. For once I actually enjoy playing a sniper. The jets are really not used to their full potential (maps too small, jets too fast). I would have been happy without them. The helicopters are well implemented. As a die-hard BF-1942 fan, it took a while for me to get used to it. But once I did, I'm now a convert. I HIGHLY recommend this game.

Best online shooting game in my opinion

Lots of massive maps, vehicles and guns. Very fun when playing on the internet. I think it is the best shooting game online but, I havn't played Far Cry. I doubt it has as many vehicles, and big maps though.

how can such a popular game suck so bad?

i know nobody cares what i think, but bf 1942 and bf vietnam are perhaps two of the worst games i've ever played. in 2006, the controls are of course completely dated and terrible (though i don't care about the graphics, they're pretty cool actually). bf vietnam does a great job at atmosphere. you really feel like you're there in vietnam. but then what happens? the control of the weapons is TRASH. talk about clunky!!! the CALL OF DUTY series blows this game away in every regard. sure, call of duty could learn some things from this game - how to use bigger maps and vehicles for example. but as far as actual GAMEPLAY and excitement, call of duty is infinitely better. there were times in this game where i'd go maybe 20 minutes without even seeing an enemy! all you do is walk around, keep walking, keep walking... maybe this is like real war, but if i wanted to be a real soldier i'd go join the army.

It should be called Battlefield FRICKIN AWESOME!!!

If this game is half as good as the first game, It'll be a serious contender for game of the year (Maybe if Halo 2 is STILL delayed) With new abilities for character classes, new vehicles, way better graphics, and many completly new things (In the helocopters, it plays old, but still good rock music from that time period) It will blow you away. It'll be one of those games you play untill 3:00 in the morning, and you'll just be getting started. With online, It'll be so sweet, I'll be in bed until March 15, or whenever it's supposed to ship.

A-mazing....

I purchased this game a few days ago, and haven't been able to stop playing it. EA did a wonderful job, and it doesn't seem near as laggy as BF1942 did. The graphics are much better, the sound is great, and the characters you fight along side add even more realism. AI is definitely improved, but still, not the greatest. The included soundtrack is brilliant, adding even more realism, so that you are completely emersed in the game. But, unfortunately, BF Vietnam has one downfall- its lack of Campaign. Campaign was my biggest draw to BF1942, with online play second. This game only has Instant action missions, and Online play. But, because the pros to this game heavily outweight the cons, it gets a 5 out of 5 anyday from me.

Going back to BF1942

I really wanted to enjoy BFV. With all the hoopla surrounding its impending release, I was truly looking forward to some fun gameplay. Alas, BFV is not fun; and I'm not talking about technical issues. BFV lacks just about everything that made BF1942 so much fun to play: good maps, opportunities to engage in and become involved with intense firefights, a sense of depth that put you in the "...I'm really here fighting these guys" frame of mind, and just all-out maddening war!!

Perhaps Vietnam itself is a poor choice for gameplay. Jungles are dense, giving snipers a great platform from which to carry out their duties. However, this is BFV's ultimate demise. While it is very satisfying nailing an enemy from 400+ yards, being on the receiving end, never seeing your enemy, time after time, ironically kills the gameplay. Wild firefights are what made BF1942 so much fun, where snipers played a much smaller role. Too bad; I think a lot of us where really looking forward to this. Better luck next time. I'm going back to BF1942.

I am sorry. This was a big waste of money. Long load times, I mean really long. After hearing the same music over and over again I began to just turn off the sound. Why I cannot use a joystick for the flying mode is a good question since were in the year 2004! and I am still using arrow keys? Reminds me of my Commodore VIC20! There are so many better choices. Call of Duty plays just fine on my computer and the multiplay is outstanding when compared to this play-station arcade game. Repeat, I will never buy an EA game again because of this. DO NOT WASTE 40 dollars on this Salvation Army donation. Thats where mine is going. I can use the tax break and learn a lesson

This game is fun if, you can find a server that doesnt lag and thats impossible and you have a top of the line system that would run doom 3 easily its not very optimzed and it can get very choppy for a very long time. I have a 2.8 gig p4 with HT and a 9800 pro 128 with 512 RAM dual channel and i get choppyness with a low resoulution and strpped down high graphics (lightmaps, shadows and menu music off)
