I bought this game with the expectations that it would be as fun as battlefield 1942 but with updated graphics. Wrong and Wrong. The graphics are on par with the predecessor and the game is rather annoying. All of the maps are visually the same - jungle after jungle with a few buildings. I have no doubts that in 6 months EA with release a $30 expansion pack because these maps are lacking. In BF 1942 there were major differences from close city combat to desert warfare to island hoping naval battles. The jungle foliage is dense to the point that you keep getting shot and do not know where it is coming from if the person shooting you is crouched or prone. It is not as balanced as BF 1942 with snipers ruling the day as they reload instantly. Spend your money on Battlefield 1942 and buy the Road to Rome expansion pack.
This game is so addictive--beware!

I am so tired from lack of sleep. I have played this game every night until 2 or 3 am since I bought it.
The title has a wide range of maps that recreate the numerous battlefields where our soldiers fought: hilly jungle, rivers, and cities.
You are able to choose from four different classes with specialties in general infantry, machine gunner, engineer and sniper.
You are able to drive and fly tanks, APC, jeeps, jets, boats, and helicopters.
The general gameply hasn't changed from the original BF: 1942, but the graphics have been upgraded. You are able to use the foliage to your advantage in attacking or hiding.
The graphics will bring slower machines to their knees. I was in the middle of a machine upgrade and played it on my AMD 2100 with Nvidia 4400 and 256k of ram. I experienced fram rate stutters and long load times between levels.
I am now running an AMD 2800 and ATI 9800 Pro and One GB ram. WOW, what a difference. I can run the display ay 1600 x 1200 with all eye candy at high. The load times have dropped to mere seconds.
Finally, the game ships with ten or so popular 60's songs that really add to the atmosphere.
Remember the scene from Apocalypse Now with the helicopter attack and the Ride of the Valkries blaring? Well you can recerate that scene yourself.
I payed $34.99 for this game and I feel it was worth it. I am having so much fun!!! Buy this game!!!

I bought this game because I loved Battlefield 1942.
One of the major problems with Battlefield 1942 was the single player.. it was boring and the bots were just plain stupid. I had my hopes up that the single player would improve in Battlefield: Vietnam but it didn't. The bots are still as stupid as they were in Battlefield 1942.
However, the muliplayer is just as bit good or better then Battlefield 1942... its just a little buggy. If you bought Raven Shield when it first came out you know what I mean. They released this game before it was ready to be released just so it could reach a release deadline. So expect tons of patches for this game.
One of the wierdest (and backward) things about this game that the graphics seem better on low then they do on high... and the game runs better. (I'm running a GeForce FX 5200)(...).
Fun game

If you liked Battlefield 1942, you'll like this too. New maps, guns, etc. Still not the best network perf. Americas Army has better physics, but this one has vehicles. :)

The Battlefield franchise enters a new era equipped with more firepower, modernized weaponry and vehicles, and a deeper infantry experience from the jungles to the beaches of Vietnam. From villages on the Ho Chi Minh Trail to the city streets of Hue wage modern warfare as the United States or North Vietnamese Army (NVA).
Select from a variety of characters within the different soldier classes as you command powerful new vehicles including attack and transport helicopters, the M551 Sheridan tank, and the F-4 Phantom fighter jet on the U.S. side and the Russian-made T-54 tank, the MIG-21, and Mi-8 multipurpose helicopter on the NVA side.
Go to war in new dramatic battle scenarios including leading a squadron of helicopters in an all-out attack on an enemy compound, executing an ambush of enemy soldiers from dense foliage, captaining a PT boat through a dangerous jungle river passage, and more. Grab your M-16, ready the Napalm, and prepare to enter some of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War.
It uses DX9 in Very high quality mode
Not nearly as good as BF1942

I loved BF1942. Just could not get enough of it. So I was looking forward to BF Vietnam. Unfortunately, the game has been a bit of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong. This is a solid game. Just not what one would expect from the franchise. Here's why I do not like it.
For one, the game too often leaves you guessing at what happened. In BF1942, one often got killed in surprising ways as well. But here, at times it seems to be impossible to even spawn.
The gameplay itself just doesn't quite feel right. I am not sure why. There are some obvious things such as the vegetation getting in the way (although this is nowhere near being the jungle environment I expected), but there also is something else. Although I can't quite figure out what. The game just does not play as well as BF1942 did.
The graphics are a major disappointment. They are not overly impressive. I do not care what some of my fellow reviewers say. This is not top-of-the-line anymore. Especially things like the water just do not seem like water to me (not even like swampy water). At the same time, performance is not great. In times where games have to compete against works of art such as FarCry, this just isn't impressive anymore.
I like the "rock and roll" gameplay with songs from the era licensed. It is great to ride into battle on a chopper that has the radio tuned to some great music. However, time spent in helicopters is not that much, and other than that, the sound seems strangely missing. I have been trying to find out whether there are some option settings or anything else I might have wrong, but wasn't able to find anything. For some reason, most vehicles hardly seem to make any noise at all.
At the end of the day, this is a good game, but not nearly what I had expected. Some people argue that this should have been an expansion, and in some ways I agree. I am sure I will be seen on some BF Vietnam servers, although for most of my BF 'needs' I am more likely to return to 1942.

I've been playing computer games for almost 15 years and this one ranks as a tremendous disappointment. I have several problems with this game. First, the AI is ridiculous--completely unbelievable. Second, I lived through this time period (joined the Air Force at the tail end of the fighting), and this game doesn't capture the feel of it. I've spent a great deal of time studying the war and found many details of this game so historically inaccurate as to be laughable. Also, even on my high-end machine the graphics looked cheesy. The bottom line is I uninstalled this game after one week. If you're looking for a game with a high immersion factor that keeps you coming back for more, save your money and look elsewhere!

I had big hopes for this one. I started getting a little bored with 1942 and Desert Combat (AFTER 1 YEAR). They were awesome and hold the record for most time on my PC. This game did not renew any of the previous enjoyment. I am sure those that didnt play 1942 will be satisfied. Basically, I was looking for something new...look, feel, sound, gameplay...something. I just didnt find it with BF Vietnam.
I like it...

My system:
1.2 Ghz AMD Athlon
512 MB RAM
GeForce2 64 MB video card
SB 512 sound card
I updated my audio and video drivers and installed the latest version of directx before installing BFV. It installed and runs fine. I've been using the defaults that it selected for my machine, low video settings, 16 bots, etc. The game plays fine and the video is still good at low res (comparable or better than BF1942). I think it's a good game with some good maps. Haven't tried multiplayer yet. The only bug I've seen is the artillery sound loop. you just need to exit the current game and start a new one to fix it (and don't use fixed artillery). I'm sure that will be fixed in a future patch.

OMG i played this at a friends house for just over 8 hours, and i have to say, this game was FUN!! Especially for those who were big fans of the original BF: 1942. But even if you havnt played those games, then i would STILL suggest this game as my pick for best game of the year (with ut2k4 a close second). For anyone looking for good army style action, with great music and awesome firefight style combat, this game is for YOU.
