Mass CHAOS - We're all gonna die!

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 4

Yup, that's what it feels like when I play this game. I've logged hundreds of hours in BF1942 and Desert Combat and I would say I could hold my own in any vehicle and on foot. I preoreded this game directly from EA's website, I was so hyped about this game...I downloaded all the trailers, watched them over and over and told my self "I can't wait"...I mean c'mon now you can't ignore the hype...EA did a good job hyping me up. So why the low score in Vietnam BF1942? I waited almost two weeks before I decided to write my review to give it a fair chance so here I go:

First the positive: The character graphics are a bit better than bf1942, you can shoot from your aircraft if you're a passanger, cool 60's rock music makes it feel like all those vietnam war movies, the radio chatter while inside the helos adds to the overall feel, and the bars and stars radio station is a blast to listen to. Oh I almost forgot, when flying you actually have a working attitude indicator so you don't get disoriented flying...good deal. So as you can see a lot of sugar coating goodies to make the game great on paper.

And now the bad: Maps are designed to add utter chaos, not like bf1942 or Desert Combat. It's hard to explain unless you play the game but it just seems everyone is running around with their heads cut off in this game. Certain maps in bf1942 forced you to work together, however I haven't seen it here yet. But that's not really fair to nag on that because this game is so new, maybe we're all just trying to get a feel for the maps, so I won't dock points for that. I will dock points for weapon balance...hands down, the best thing to get is the M-79 gernade launcher with the M-60 machine gun. You have tons of ammo and if you point in the general direction and shoot at someone you'll probably get a kill, no skill involved. The game is starting to feel a lot like Unreal Tournament games...really you die that much, and it's not because you suck but it's so easy to kill each other. Forget crouching and aiming at people, I'll just run at them guns a-blazing because that's what seems to work best. Overall this game feels like a mod maybe should have been a 19 dollar expansion pack because after playing for a couple hours you'll feel it is.

Patches patches patches, "NVIDIA the way games are meant to be played" and guess who are sticking that saying on their boxes...you guessed EA, you're right...so how come if you own an NVIDIA card, you have to download a patch to play this game with minimal glitches...yup, nvidia patch for Vietnam battlefield is available now for download. I own a 9800 pro and I need a patch because when I turn on 8x AF and 4x AA, my gun disappears on and off in my hand (although I could still shoot it), graphics start gliching and words disapear and I know it's not my video card because B1942 works fine with those settings, as a matter of fact all games I play work fine with that setting because I always leave those settings on as default, now I have to turn it off when I play BF Vietnam. So what does that tell you? Uh-uh rush job, yes folks, most can agree with that.

This game really has some stiff competition, with the likes of Eve of Destruction and Desert Combat FREE mods, I can't justify why you would need to purchase this game, maybe eventually you will because "everyone's doin it" but for now wait till a patch comes out to fix the quirky stuff and more map packs are released. Hey, the good folks behind desert combat may port their mod over to the BF Vietnam engine, we'll. By the way, I still find myself playing Desert Combat a lot more than this game, it has better air craft and overall a lot more FUN and isn't that the reason we play games? (this game in my book gets 3 1/2 stars for the record but I can't put it)

Great Multiplayer experience

It has it's weaknesses, but they are few. If you enjoyed Battlefield 1942 and have a thing for modern combat, then you are going to enjoy this. They've improved the game engine and the graphics, making it an enjoyable game over-all.

If you don't plan to play it as multiplayer, then pass on it. Go with Call of Duty or something from the Medal of Honor series. No campaign mode like in BF1942. You can however, play the maps in single player mode for practice, but the AI just doesn't cut it. Your teammates won't be the brightest decision makers, and the enemy will always spot you no matter how hard you hide. Stick to on-line play like it was intended for. The maps are filled with trees and overgrown foliage, lots of places to hide and run for cover. Great choice of gunboats, fighter jets, tanks and other vehicles, including all classes of Vietnam-era helicopters.

With the right setup on your system, the sights and sounds of battle in this installment of the series are incredible. You can hear the distant artillery fire, overflying jet fighters and the rumble as an F4 Phantom plasters a hillside with napalm. Smells like victory...

Runs smoth with high settings on my:

Pentium 4 w/hyper threading
3.2 GHz
1G RAM
GeForce PCX 5300 128MB video card

There were high expectations for this game. Unfortunately, many of them turned out to be letdowns.

First, lets talk about what makes BFV different than BV42. Well, for one, you have a "radio" feature which lets you play music when you're in a vehicle, and music you can put in yourself so that your list is customized. I'll admit this was a nice addition - there were many times in BF42 when I wish I could have played the theme to "Patton" or I really wanted the Luftwaffe march from "Battle of Britain" to be blaring from my Heinkel. Aside from this, the setting is (obviously) in the Vietnam conflict. Different battles from the war are playable (including the Ia Drang Valley or Hue) and you can play the North, the South, or the Americans, depending on the scenario. Weapons, uniforms, and models look accordingly.

Unfortunately, this is where the game starts to suffer. For one, there's no "Campaign" mode, so battles have to be selected individually. There are also some serious video issues, particularly when the game was first released. The models often come out looking jagged or will be missing parts like the hands or fingers. The levels also leave something to be desired, as they are neither exciting or unique. Many jungle levels look the same, as do the city levels. There are also times when the game will lag or run slow, something that never occurred for me in BF42. I also know many other people who play this game, and they too experience similar issues. It made me wonder if EA Games rushed this product to the market as opposed to checking it for such common problems beforehand.

Some gameplay issues come into hand as well. I have to understand how melee bags damage tanks, or how a person can't die when they're shot by an M60...point blank! There was also one incident where an enemy soldier was shot six times in the head by a sniper rifle...and was still moving by the end of it.

By the end of it, I realized that BFV didn't live up to the great gaming experience BF42 gave me. Eventually it dawned on me the only reason I was playing it was because of the radio feature. I've since uninstalled the game and have sold it. I can't say its a sad loss. All in all, I wouldn't suggest spending too much money on this. I've heard the game describe by gamer and reviewer alike as a purchable mod, and that pretty much is how the game feels when you play it. I would go into it without high expectations, because anything more will just lead to a serious disappointment.

This is going to be great!

Thanks alot amazon! Not only you gave me the lowest price, but I didn't have to pay an extra $10 for pre-ordering!

Alot of new features in Battlefield: Vietnam. Now, you can pick your own primary weapon, no matter what soldier class you choose, unlike in BF: 1942. You can shoot your hand held weapon from the passenger side of any vehicle. You can totally customize your characters, from your outfit, and race, to the appearance of your characters head and face. New vehicles including some awsome helicopters! The Huey attack helicopter, a Huey Transport Helicopter, a Chinook, a Cobra attack helicopter, and many more! What I can't wait to fly is the new F4 Phantom with it's Napalm bomb! Also, you can customize the main game menu with your own songs! Not only that, while flying your men into action in a vehicle, you can jam to some 60's music, very good music :). Some of the bands are...

"The Box Tops"
"Count Five"
"Bobby Fuller Four"
"Canned Heat"
"Edwin Star"

The maps on this game are beutifull! Tons of trees, bushes, grass, and water. The soldier classes are packed with more weapons than before, including some anti-tank weapons to even the odds against enemy armor ;). All sorts of traps you can set, pungee sticks, rolling logs, and alot more. The new weapon animations are great! Except that the shells come out on the left side, it's not realistic but looks great! Now you can even pick up vehicles with your helicopters! You can transport tanks across rivers, or into action.

There is so much more, I can't get it all out fast enough, going to have to learn how to type faster :). It's going to be a great game! It's worth the price for sure! You wont find a better deal than amazons!

Great game!

When I first ran this game I had a problem with textures flipping out and things like that but all I had to do was change a couple of settings and it ran fine. My friend couldn't run the game for a while after he got it but then he found out it was due to some weird DX9 debug settings he had turned on for development work. Anyway, after we got the game working I have to say that it is one of the most fun games I have ever played!! The vehicle work is pretty much perfect! There's nothing quite as fun as doing a strafing run in a helicopter and taking out a couple of dudes with rockets. Or airlifting a buddy in a tank and having him shoot at airplanes with the main gun while flying him around. This game is sweet! Thanks a lot EA and Dice!!!!!

This game really seems to disappoint those who do not read real game reviews before purchasing their games. I can understand being disappointed with this game if you want something to play by yourself. This is not a single player game. Battlefield was never intended for single player purposes. Anyone who plays these games knows this fact. The bots and A.I. are mostly there for practicing and having co-op LAN matches against the A.I.

Playing online in Battlefield is truly challenging. You can run around and try to kill whatever moves. Or you can play with your team and try to win the match by attacking the oppositions bases. Attacking your oppponents is really fun because of the strange matchups that occur. Running into a tank with your sniper gear is not fun, but you never know, maybe the driver will leave his tank to kill you and the opposite happens, then you have his tank! It is really nice to be creative, like making a car bomb, or laying traps in odd areas. This game is just too deep for some people, so they throw insults. Its really too bad. I dont like RTS's, but I would never call one garbage because I did not read the game review(s) and bought one.

If you like shooters and have a good online connection, do yourself a favor and buy this game. Once you get past the frustration of learning the many controls and learning some maps, you will disappear from the ones you love.

p.s. This game runs fine on pc's that are updated and have newer gear. Some of these reviewers dont know how to take care of their pc's. New or not, updates from windows wont make your chipset, or BIOS run any better.

I can't understand why people would rate this with 1 or 2 stars? OK.. if you are a 60's peace activist who has been on the barricades during the Vietnam war, it might be logical that you don't like the game. Or if you have a misconfigured machine, like one of the other reviewers. I am running the game on a 2.8 pentium, with a 9600 radeon 256mb and the machine as 1 gig internal memory --> everything set to HIGH and running with over 90 frames a sec. So, that's the tech part. Gameplay is fantastic. Multiplayer is absolutely a must when you play this game. Nothing beats playing this game with a couple of friends, forming a clan. Use teamspeak to talk to your buddies. The sounds are excellent and the graphics outstanding. If you have an ATI card, make sure to switch off AA and AF (this will be fixed in a later ATI driver I am sure or with a patch of BFV). It was the best 40$ spent in a LONG time.

Lets get this straight. There is a difference between a game having bugs, and your computer not being able to handle it. If you don't have at least a Gig of ram, a GeForce 4, and 2.0+ processor, your going to experience performance issues in larger online games.

Fortunately if you do have the requirements, this game kicks total a** . It blows BF1942 away, I played that and Desert Combat since the days they came out, and this is a far superior product. IT RULES!!!!

What is everyone so elated about

I love games and first person shooters but I have to say that after recently tryng both Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam I am considering going back to playing board games.

First of all the movement is so lame that when I compare it to other games like Call of Duty, I can't imagine that the creators of these games were somewhat embarrassed.

It's true that you get to go into different vehicles, such as tanks, planes and jeeps (yipee), but half the time that you are riding shot gun the driver aimlessly drives into trees gets stuck and I found myself killing the drivers just so that I can get into the drivers seat and get moving. The battles are so unrealistic that I wonder how this is even a war game. The look and feel of the game is entirely unsatisfactory and after about a half our I found myself thinking about deleting the game off my system. Guess what, its deleted.

I know that games are subjective and that many may think it is just the greatest...I respect your opinions, but for me, these games were just horrible.

It is just my opinion, but What can I tell you? Try before you buy, and consider yourselves forewarned.

Buggy, Laggy, not finished yet

Put simply, this game gets old fast and is very laggy no matter what you do in the options menu. Maybe with a really good patch it will turn out okay. I play BF1942 and Desert Combat and I love them both (especially single player), but this was a disappointment. Wait for a patch and more reviews before buying.
