I bet it's fun if it actually worked.

I'm running a P 1.8; 512 RAm and GE Force 3 64. This game is essentially unplayable. Bizzare graphics, freezing and crashing to desktop, slow motion movement at the lowest settings. I'm sure this game is a lot of fun but I would wait at least 6 months before purchasing. I've never encountered a so poorly planned and designed game. It's really bad. They hyped the bejesus out of it and it's unfortunate beacuse most people will be instantly turned off by the quality. Stay away.

Ok first off don't buy this game if you already own other Battlefield titles. The game does not add enough features to be enjoyable for Battlefield fans. To those who are new I'd give you the thumbs up to buy it. Although it is a little buggy (Not as much as others would have you believe) the developers are already working on a new patch. The main feature is the vehicles with the same concept of BF42 except you can airlift vehicles in. Trust me it isnt as cool as it sounds. First off, 70% of players can't fly the helos, 2nd, it takes about a minute to hook a vehicle, and finally, the Vietcong will blow it away as soon as you land. Overall, I'd say this game is not good enough for a standalone title and perhaps you should consider buying Battlefield:42, but if you have you're heart set on it, you're gonna be a little dissapointed.

Don't bother. Wait for the patched, Gold Edition.

This *looks* like it would be a wonderful game. Really.

Unfortunately, the hardware this game needs to run on is not so much 'top of the line', as other reviews claim, as it is just plain limited.

EA simply hasn't gotten this one ready yet. I suppose it's another indication of the pressure to release games, instead of taking the time to get it right. For example, the sound hardware supported is SoundBlaster or nothing. Have an nforce2 board? Forget 5.1 sounds. Have a Quadro4, or FireGL graphics card? Sorry, we didn't test them.

In short, if you don't have a Dell Dimension Desktop, this game will underperform, and currently has a number of hideous bugs which make the game unplayable. Extremely disappointing, I was really looking forward to this one. Save your money.

Best War Game available

1942 was the best war game for a while and now Vietnam is which makes it an outstanding game. There isn't a tremendous amount of improvements but the game didn't need a whole lot of improvement in the first place. Still a blast to play with improved guns and maps and everything else but don't expect anything mind bendingly awesome as far as changes. You'll need a fairly high-end machine to run this game smoothly so if you don't have one then you should look at something else. 1942 fans and FPS fans in general should have a great time playing this game.

awesome game

It amazes me that some of these people are actually buying these new high end games to play on their 'old' systems......P 1.8; 512 RAm and GE Force 3 64, and then blame the game saying it does not work. The technology is vastly improving that you need to keep up on the latest upgrades and updates if you want to keep up with the new games. I have a P4 3.0....512......GeForce5200....BFV runs fine on it.....with the exception of a few highly congested battle scenes. My system is only 6 months old, and I am already planning on upgrading. if you want better games, you will have to pay to keep up with them.

thought this game would be fun but it really wasn't. lots of bugs really drag the experience. im running an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with a GeForce 5900XT and im getting white lines while playing the game. could be a driver problem though. i'll find out tonight. the game is often choppy for some reason. maybe the game would be fun if there werent so many bugs. better luck next time EA

EA Games Fan SERIOUSLY Disappointed!

I have been a huge Electronic Arts fan for years, and my gaming collection includes a vast amount of their products including NFS: Underground (5 stars), NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 (3 stars), NFS: Porsche Unleashed (5 stars), Battlefield 1942 (5 stars), and, now, Battlefield Vietnam. My opinion of Battlefield 1942 can be read by clicking on my name above this review -- you can see how highly I thought of that game in comparison to this one!

Currently, I am running Vietnam on a Pentium 2.8ghz 800mhz FSB w/ HT technology chipset, 1gb of dual channel DDR400 memory, 80gb serial ata 7200rpm hard drive, GeForce 5600 256mb video card, a Nokia 21" monitor, and Windows XP Professional. This set up makes all my other games FLY w/ absolute maximum graphics settings, but it barely handles Vietnam!!! Even in 1024x768x16 graphics mode w/ the _second highest_ graphics quality setting, the game is extremely choppy and laggy. Often so much so that it's extremely difficult to aim the sight where I intend! I ran 1942 in 1600x1200x32 w/ all maximum graphics settings (including visibility) and the game ran flawlessly. I am so disappointed with Vietnam! In order to run the game without lag, I have to run it in 800x600x16 graphics mode with all graphics settings set to medium or less. This is TOTALLY unacceptable! I tried running it on 1600x1200x32 w/ all maximum settings just to see what it looked like, and the graphics are not even as good as 1942 in my opinion, which brings up the question -- why the heck are the graphics worse than 1942, but the game runs 20 times slower?!

The poor graphics quality/performance is my main complaint with this game, but I have several others. One being that all the different options menus have minimum settings listed. Even in the graphics section, you can't increase/decrease visibility or texture quality, or anything like that. You only get a few options to play with. Another complaint I have with this game, is that the AI seem to cheat a lot! In 1942, you could sneak up on people and stab them to death with your knife or shoot them in the back of the head execution style if you were careful enough. In Vietnam, the enemy even almost seems to see you if you are on the other side of a hill! I don't like feeling like I'm being cheated, it's the worst feeling in the world in my opinion. The other complaint I have with the game, is the single player mode. I was disappointed to see that the missions were not arranged in a campaign mode! You only get about a dozen missions, and several of them are the same maps repeated over with different checkpoints. Yuck! If I had known all this in advance, I would have waited for the price to come down to about twenty dollars before I bought this game!

Despite its extreme disappointments, this game does provide a good amount of fun, and has many wonderful aspects to it. You are able to customize your guy a little better in Vietnam, as opposed to 1942. In 1942, you could select whether you wanted to play as a scout, assault, anti-tank, medic, or engineer. In Vietnam, you can pick scout, assault, anti-tank, or engineer. The cool thing is that you get two weapons arrangements to choose from for each class, and they vary slightly from mission to mission. Also, engineers can have mortar launchers, blow torches (dismantle vehicles), shovels (move spawn points), booby traps (for vehicles), bouncing bettys, claymores, and some other interesting items unique to this game! My favorite set up is an anti tank soldier, with a LAW launcher and an m60. You can lay down on one side of a hill, and mow the enemy soldiers down as they pop over with 100 rapid fire m60 rounds! The m16 and car15 are also nice weapons. I own an ar-15, and the sound, recoil, and accuracy in the game is almost like the real thing. I'm not very fond of playing as the North Vietnamese Army, however. The action and power of their weapons really seem to suck (I own an ak-47 as well, which is a nice firearm for close quarters combat or cycling 1,000 rounds through it in a farm field, but this game really does reproduce the not-so-great accuracy and massive recoil of a real ak-47). The NVA soldiers also don't seem to hold nearly as much ammo as the Americans. Another cool feature of this game is that you get to fly fighter jets and helicopters, though I find the helicopters to be extremely difficult to fly with a joystick! I have better luck with a keyboard and a mouse as far as that goes. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet (only have dial up, and haven't yet had a chance to cart my computer to my brother's house in the next state over), so I can't give my own opinion of it -- but I have heard that it is a good bit better than the singleplayer mode. However, with the graphics being so choppy, I can imagine how difficult it would be to play against human opponents!

All in all, this game gets a 3 out of 5 rating from me. It's still a fun game to play, but I look to be extremely bored with it in the next month or two, unless EA hurries up and comes out with a patch that improves the graphics quality and performance, adds some maps, and tones down the supernaturally aware state of the AI a bit! I give the graphics quality a 3.5 out of 5 rating (I do like the bushes and other ground texturing), the graphics performance a 2 out of 5 rating, game play a 4 out of 5 rating, the fun factor a 3.5 out of 5 rating, and the sound a 5 out of 5 rating. I believe this game is worth about half the price I paid for it (bought it around the time it first came out, so I paid top dollar), but it is still a decent way to pass a few hours out of a boring day!

Graphics are awesome but it is very demanding on your CPU. Anything lower then a P4 3.0 and 1gig of memory you find game play very laggy at times.

The weapons models look very realistic. Single player mode is fun but will become boring after a few hours. The AI are lazy and tend to stand around. Planes and choppers are very user friendly. Anyone can fly them.

Online play. If you have young children beware. There are a lot of angry people online who insist on cussing and yelling at other players. The chat can become very nasty at times .
Game play will change online!!

There is a patch out for the game. From what I understand it resolved some issues the game had with a select few video cards. There were also a few gun changes which split the m60/law kit and also reduced the accuracy of the US weapons.

Personally, I would stay away from this game and wait for BF 2.
If you need your BF:V fix and already have bf1942 you can download Eve of destruction. A free mod. The only difference between BF:V and EoV is ground cover. Other then that it's the same game. Same weapons, same maps.

in short.. I give BF:V two thumbs down.

Some people complain, the rest of us play a really good game

Video games are my main past time. Trust me, I'm a nerd.

A lot of people complain about this geme, yes, but they don't realize just what makes a game. I'm sorry if your 400 mhz CPU can't handle it but people really should know that nowadays if you really want to play games you'll want a 2 gig CPU or better. And don't be fooled by their protests, this game does not require a $500 graphics card, those people are probably just lacking proper CPU power like I said before. And lag is caused by poor connection speed on either your computer or the server, not the game.

All the technical stuff out of the way, BFVietnam is a great game. It does a fairly good job of capturing the supense and tension of the Vietnam War. Choppers are handy and can be used to move spawn points and vehicles across the map. But choppers are not safe from Vietcongs with heat seeking missles, hiding just below the trees. If you liked battlefield but want to fight with something more modern, like in Desert Combat, this is a good game. In vehicles, the ability of your passengers to shoot out of the windows come in handy, and often nessicary to protect yourselves from Vietcongs popping out of tunnel networks, which, if your the Vietcong, can be used with devistating effectivness agianst you enemy, allowing you to sneak up easily behind them.

A vey fun game, with intensity and that magic number of realism to make the game fun, but not impossible.

This will be a simple review... it's buggy, laggy and the graphics are not what they should be but I still love the game. I have played BF1942's mod Desert Combat for ages and managed at one stage to get to top 250 on the CVG rankings (out of 200,000 players!) and can say that DC is a far more polished item and it's free. I hope they port DC to his engine and the DC modders will show EA how it's done! I would still recommend buying it as the patches to fix the problems will come out soon. I dislike EA for their rubbish support and especially of the ATI cards which are now the most popular cards in new PCs!
