Thanks to Amazon.com, I can now rest asure that I reserved a copy of BF:Vietnam all for myself. The question is, will it be a good game? Well here's the answer, BF:Vietnam is bound to be the best seller of 2004 along with CS:Condition Zero due to the following reasons: 1. It is a pick-and-play game; hence you dont need to know any characters or any such storyline, all you need to do is pick either the good guys or the bad guys, kill your opponents, pick your weapons and skin, costumize your class (assualt, special ops etc) and battle it out. Ofcourse, the thing condition zero lacks is Battlefield's series of cars, planes and tanks making it more resourceful and entertaining. The game has two armies, U.S and North Vietnamese army. Each army has different classes (Sniper, Assault, Heavy Assault, Special Ops) note: there is no medic since each class has its own medical patch! Ok, apart from classes you have another option, pick your uniform and character (skin). 2. There are a huge variety of different weapons and vehichles to pick from, each class will give you an option to pick one from two different weapons gears! 3. Many new maps including jungles, capital city, river banks, sea shores etc. 4. Grass images more realistic; this time you can hide under intense grass in order to be prevented from being seen. 5. Vehichles have music in them which you can activate by pressing a button (U.S vehichles have American 60's music, Vietcong has different propaganda messages etc.) note: dont activate near any opponents base, since theyll hear you coming! 6. You can set traps if you pick sniper class. 7. If you come near a flag and want to capture it, a timer is set in order to know how long you should stay for, and if theres an enemy in the area, youll get a warning signal/blimp on the map! note: bring more people to the flag you need to capture and your capture timer speeds up!
Well, thats about that, all you need to know about the game, for more information visit their website at:

So, a few things...

First off, this is a fantastic production and a follow-on that the folks at Digital Illusions can be real proud of. They had some very high expectations after their previous groundbreaking release "Battlefield 1942". Battlefield Vietnam is an extremely fun game to play from the first minute (in fact, before you even start you'll be moved by the level of detail and attention that went into the pre-game screens; the UI is insanely intuitive, the music is some kind of 70's funk-electro mix with dubs of Lyndon Johnson in it...RAD). Getting in a game is a snap, their are tons of servers, and plenty of room in multiplayer mode.

In game, you'll be very impressed with the graphics. Next to Far Cry (which has undoubtedly the best graphics by far in any game today) the graphics are breathtaking. Lush jungle, totally reanimated water (from BF1942), cool particle effects, refraction...you name it, this isn't a mod, they substantially improved the engine.

The play speed is slightly faster paced than 1942, but not noticably. Those who liked the physics of 1942, the vehicle speed, combat speed, damage-take speed...well, you'll be right at home.

As for specs, if you can run 1942, you should have no trouble. In fact, a friend of mine (who has a somewhat dated system) contends that Vietnam runs better on his machine (I haven't independently verified).

But lets talk about the coolest thing in the game:

Music!

Not just music, but mega $ super hits from the 70's. EA spent the big bucks and enabled the game with a bunch of really cool tracks. Now I understand that many games have music, but what's so special about this game is that OTHERS HEAR the music you're playing! Get in a vehicle, choose a song from the playlist and it blasts from your vehicle (louder the closer in proximity you are to others). Add helicopters, you get a monster load of gaming goodness! I was in an Apache last weekend chasing a convoy (including two of my buddies) through the jungle bumping "Nowhere to run to baby, nowhere to hide...." from my Heli. I could practically hear them screaming "oh S@#$" from their PC's. RAD!

A few very minor grievances: First off, you'll notice this game is like 5 disks to download (yikes). But that's minor. Another issue that is really just my opinion (because I think helicopters are so cool)...I take issue with just how vulnerable they are in the game...Jet Fighters eat them for lunch, but from the ground the Surface to Air Missiles ARE GUIDED! Needless to say, even the most experienced pilots will be having some pretty short trips on allot of maps. Also, and this is just my experience with a very popular mod for 1942 (Desert Combat), I actually found the helicopters easy to fly. But again, for those of you who remember the first few versions of DC, they were released when 1942 didn't have any real flight guidance software for developers. Helicopter flying was INSANELY HARD. I literally spent over 50 hours flying before I could reliably land and pick people up. You get a private helicopter license with only 40 hours in the "Real World"...!

Anyway, this game is a blast and worth every dollar. You'll be wowed by the game and laughing hysterically on your first map. EA did it again.

I hope this was helpful.

Just the facts-

Many of the reviews that you will see here are biased due to the fact that their hardware doesn't perform the way they want it to. Furthermore, they will proceed to review a game based on such merits vs the games actual advantages and disadvantages.

I don't like to compare this game to BF1942 because I think there are enough differences to seperate the 2. Naturally people don't want to pay for something if they don't have to .... thus justifying statements like "should have been a $20 mod." I paid $40 and its worth every cent. (and now you can get it from amazon for under $30!) Anyway, I have no alligence to EA but I honestly feel they did a good thing with this one. Heres some pros:

The vehicles are balanced - air / land supremecy is not a factor here with intermediate or better players. I felt as if the land vehicles dominated in 1942, and the air vehicles dominated in Desert Combat. Why that may have been the intent it leaves for very unbalanced battles and personally I enjoy a close fight.

new innovative features - I LOVE the fact that they integrated an old school sound track! I actually had a blast when 2 of my buddies jumped in the huey with me and I turned on the radio to "fortunate son" (everyone can hear it playing) and we ride into battle guns blazing! All vehicles have this ability. You can also use a "tunneling" feature as the VC - and set traps on vehicles. Theres nothing like trapping a tank and watching a bunch of crazies pile in .... believe me they will have a blast! ;) You can a pick vehicles up with helicopters and move them into battle, and in my opinion the air vehicles are easier to manuever than in 1942 .. but not TOO easy such as DC.

Perfoms well (keep in mind this is subjective)- Been on many servers with no major lag problems that I can actually blame on the game / server itself. Game looks good on my TI4600 even at lower performance. I have seen it played on multiple systems of varying hardware with no problems. I have seen forum after forum of people complaining about bugs. The typical cause? The infamous "no-cd" patches. Just buy the damn game ... its worth it.

Disadvantages: The AI in this is pretty good when cranked up but still not great. A bit predictable, but somewhat crafty at times. If you like single player it will probably be fun for a while but multiplayer is much better.

Overall this game is a keeper and goes into my collection. If you buy 5 games in 2004 this definitely ranks as one of them.

Gl and enjoy!

This game is amazing.

First of all, you should not listen to negative reviews for this game. The people who complain about it obviously DID NOT READ the minimum requirements on the box!!! This game does have higher requirements than almost any other game I have seen (specifically, Geforce 3, Radeon 8500 or higher graphics cards).

With requirements like that, you should not even think of buying the game if your computer does not have at least a 64 meg graphics card and a cable modem.

Get the game if:
1) You have Nvidia or Radeon graphics cards greater than or equal to 64 megs.
2) You have a cable modem

DO NOT get the game if:
1) You have a 56K connection.
2) Your computer is old.

Now, onto the game itself:

I was blown away. The game is incredible. I run it with Medium video settings, and the game runs flawlessly. EA has added many nice touches. Here are a few:

1) You can no longer keep running when zoomed in (this is much more realistic)
2) All new weapons with all new, much more realistic sounds.
3) The sounds they have added are amazing. Next to the water you can actually here the water coming in and out, there are birds in the woods, and the sky is incredible. Not like the boring blue haze of the original Battlefield 1942.
4) The maps are much more immersive. The jungle maps especially. In some the foliage is so dense you sometimes pass an enemy within 10 feet without noticing them! That adds a lot to the stealth part of the game.
5) Timers letting you know how long until a base is taken, and alarms if a base is under attack.
6) A sniper is much more effective now with more accurate weapons. (Not to worry, the game hasn't turned into a sniper fest. Snipers aren't effective in all the maps because of the dense jungles in some).

Those are a few of the reasons I enjoy the game so much more than its predecessors.
If you have a good system and like FPS this is a MUST BUY.

P.S. Flight of the Valkyries is the best piece to play from your vehicle radio when in game :).

It should be called Battlefield FRICKIN AWESOME!!!

If this game is half as good as the first game, It'll be a serious contender for game of the year (Maybe if Halo 2 is STILL delayed) With new abilities for character classes, new vehicles, way better graphics, and many completly new things (In the helocopters, it plays old, but still good rock music from that time period) It will blow you away. It'll be one of those games you play untill 3:00 in the morning, and you'll just be getting started. With online, It'll be so sweet, I'll be in bed until March 15, or whenever it's supposed to ship.

This is going to be great!

Thanks alot amazon! Not only you gave me the lowest price, but I didn't have to pay an extra $10 for pre-ordering!

Alot of new features in Battlefield: Vietnam. Now, you can pick your own primary weapon, no matter what soldier class you choose, unlike in BF: 1942. You can shoot your hand held weapon from the passenger side of any vehicle. You can totally customize your characters, from your outfit, and race, to the appearance of your characters head and face. New vehicles including some awsome helicopters! The Huey attack helicopter, a Huey Transport Helicopter, a Chinook, a Cobra attack helicopter, and many more! What I can't wait to fly is the new F4 Phantom with it's Napalm bomb! Also, you can customize the main game menu with your own songs! Not only that, while flying your men into action in a vehicle, you can jam to some 60's music, very good music :). Some of the bands are...

"The Box Tops"
"Count Five"
"Bobby Fuller Four"
"Canned Heat"
"Edwin Star"

The maps on this game are beutifull! Tons of trees, bushes, grass, and water. The soldier classes are packed with more weapons than before, including some anti-tank weapons to even the odds against enemy armor ;). All sorts of traps you can set, pungee sticks, rolling logs, and alot more. The new weapon animations are great! Except that the shells come out on the left side, it's not realistic but looks great! Now you can even pick up vehicles with your helicopters! You can transport tanks across rivers, or into action.

There is so much more, I can't get it all out fast enough, going to have to learn how to type faster :). It's going to be a great game! It's worth the price for sure! You wont find a better deal than amazons!

There's a patch you can download to play as John Kerry. Yeah, but all you do is stand in a boat for 4 months getting hit by debris and at the end of the game you get a lot of medals for nothing. The add on kit in the next year will be called "Battlefield VVAW: Hanoi John 007".

Don't listen to the haters

Lets get this straight. There is a difference between a game having bugs, and your computer not being able to handle it. If you don't have at least a Gig of ram, a GeForce 4, and 2.0+ processor, your going to experience performance issues in larger online games.

Fortunately if you do have the requirements, this game kicks total a** . It blows BF1942 away, I played that and Desert Combat since the days they came out, and this is a far superior product. IT RULES!!!!

Some people complain, the rest of us play a really good game

Video games are my main past time. Trust me, I'm a nerd.

A lot of people complain about this geme, yes, but they don't realize just what makes a game. I'm sorry if your 400 mhz CPU can't handle it but people really should know that nowadays if you really want to play games you'll want a 2 gig CPU or better. And don't be fooled by their protests, this game does not require a $500 graphics card, those people are probably just lacking proper CPU power like I said before. And lag is caused by poor connection speed on either your computer or the server, not the game.

All the technical stuff out of the way, BFVietnam is a great game. It does a fairly good job of capturing the supense and tension of the Vietnam War. Choppers are handy and can be used to move spawn points and vehicles across the map. But choppers are not safe from Vietcongs with heat seeking missles, hiding just below the trees. If you liked battlefield but want to fight with something more modern, like in Desert Combat, this is a good game. In vehicles, the ability of your passengers to shoot out of the windows come in handy, and often nessicary to protect yourselves from Vietcongs popping out of tunnel networks, which, if your the Vietcong, can be used with devistating effectivness agianst you enemy, allowing you to sneak up easily behind them.

A vey fun game, with intensity and that magic number of realism to make the game fun, but not impossible.

Great game!

When I first ran this game I had a problem with textures flipping out and things like that but all I had to do was change a couple of settings and it ran fine. My friend couldn't run the game for a while after he got it but then he found out it was due to some weird DX9 debug settings he had turned on for development work. Anyway, after we got the game working I have to say that it is one of the most fun games I have ever played!! The vehicle work is pretty much perfect! There's nothing quite as fun as doing a strafing run in a helicopter and taking out a couple of dudes with rockets. Or airlifting a buddy in a tank and having him shoot at airplanes with the main gun while flying him around. This game is sweet! Thanks a lot EA and Dice!!!!!
