The one star is the lowest I could go, but a "0" would be appropriate. As an e-mail from Tech Help told me after I found all the opening control screens were filled with rectangular blocks rather than text, the game is "very demanding" (i.e., it was poorly developed), and will support only AT/Radeon, NVIDIA GEForce, and Matrox Parhela video cards. Don't waste your money if you haven't got one of these cards.

This might be a good game. i'm not sure. i have spent all my time since buying it downloading patches and spending up to an hour trying to connect to a server. and if i do manage to get into a server my ping is so bad i can't even move. i have a T1 connection and the lowest ping i have ever had playing this game is 650. nice try EA

The multiplayer demo of this game, which just has 1 map, 2 sides, and not all of the vehicles from each of those sides, has already proved to be extremely addicting and fun to play. There's just so much you can do and so many possibilities, since you can jump into and out of any vehicle instantly and play as one of 5 infantry classes. Even your infantry class selection is flexible, because you can quickly drop your current kit and pick up a dead infantry's kit from the ground, effectively changing your infantry class on the fly. Also, the weapons and vehicles are all very well balanced. For example: the rocket that the bazooka/anti-tank infantry class fires doesn't do much damage to infantry, unless if it's a direct hit. This makes players have to choose the best kit for what they want to do, and ,unlike Quake and other action games, rocket launchers wont dominate all aspects of combat. They are, however, good at what they're meant to do: destroy tanks, with their shaped-charge explosives. Just the way everything fits together is so beautiful, and there's always a counter for every weapon and vehicle. The gameplay is so open ended that you can get pretty creative. I've done things throwing all my explosive packs into a japanese jeep (as an engineer), getting my detonator ready, driving to an enemy base or battle, jumping out of my jeep and letting it roll into the middle of enemies, and then blowing it up to get a few kills (especially when they get inside to drive it while my explosives are still in it, hehe) and other crazy things. Also, the demo has already become the 2nd most played game on GameSpy, beating all others except Half-Life (which has a ton of mods since it's been out so long). The system requirements may be a little steeper than some other games, but it is well worth it, and the game runs beautifully. (I can run the demo, all graphics options maxed at 1024x768 32bit, on my athlon 1.4 ghz 512mb ram GeForce4 ti4200 128mb at a smooth and high framerate) The models are very well detailed, you can see the eyes on the infantry moving and blinking, and their mouthes opening and closing. The level of detail system allows this by scaling down the polygon counts and stuff as vehicles and infantry get further away from you, and increasing details as things get closer to you, so there's no wasted visual performance. This game is like many games in one, and has something for everyone that likes action or war games. My favorite genres are action games and flight sims, and the way this game mixes it all together, in an accessible, balanced, and action packed sort of way, is perfect.

*For lower end machines tuning down the video settings and the amount of AI (for single player) helps the problem*
*To really enjoy the game you will need a Ti4600 128MB GeForce4 (higher end video cards let you increase the AI on single player increasing the fun), P4 2ghz (lower load times), 768mb of Ram (makes the game run smoother), Thrustmaster Force Feedback Racing Wheel (for the many WW2 vehicals you will drive), and Saitek J24C X45 Flight Control System (or any joy stick will make flying a plane easier).*
*The game play is really intense both on single and multiplayer but multiplayer is the true gem. Pitting your self against and with your fellow men will add bigger hint of realsim and strategy to the game. The scope of what you can do is enormous (take off in a plane, tank, take a jeep, etc) making the game truly fun.*
*You do not have to be a WW2 junkie or a first person shooter maniac to enjoy this game. It's a game for anyone who enjoys multiplayer type games, strategizing, communicating with your team, and battles modeled over real historic ones. This game will impress almost everyone.*
*The games graphics are much like the graphics in Medal of Honor, good but not excellent. The sound is good but again nothing excellent. Keep in mind if these things were beefed up the system requirements would be higher allowing less people to play.*
*Some minor annoyances are with the sniper rifle after you take a shot the sniper mod turns off. This disables you from seeing if you shot the guy or not. Some glitches but overall an excellent and ground breaking game.*
*Buy it!*

This is the most amazing and realistic war games I've ever played. The demo is a work of art. Fly planes, drive boats (including Aircraft Carriers and battleships), drive tanks, jeeps, and all kinds of vehicles. Instead of just going by plane or ground, you can do multiple things. I would say this game is a combination of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (foot battles) Command and Conquer Renegade (vechicles) and Crimson Skies (similar air battles). I highly recommend this game when it comes out.
Game has so much to offer-Redefintion of replay value

Throughout this whole game, the different levels all pose a challenge. Being able to control any vehicle you see is the best way to have fun in the levels. This game has by far the highest replay value of any first-person shooter multiplayer game. This game is Medal of honor to the next level. WOrth buying and worth playing.

Every few years or so, a game is introduced which totally revolutionizes gaming. For example, remember what Half-Life did for the first person shooter genre? Battlefield 1942 is such a game.
When the PC version of Medal of Honor (Electronic Arts) was released in late 2001, I and many other gamers immediately realized that game design had just taken both a technical, as well as an artistic, leap forward. No doubt, Medal of Honor raised the bar substantially.
But, when EA and DICE released their much anticipated multiplayer demo of Battlefield 1942, it became immediately evident that PC game design had dramatically pushed the envelope of both artistic and technical achievement. This game is so different, so awe inspiring, so technically advanced that I predict it will do more than just raise the bar - it will change gaming forever. In fact, it is so different, that I hesitate to call it a game, I'd prefer to call it a battlefield simulation!
The incredible complexity of Battlefield 1942's game engine is what is most fascinating. Think about the gameplay experience that is available in this Battlefield simulation:
All four major WWII theaters of operation!
More than 30 vehicles to ride, fly, or float around in, including surprisingly realistic look and feel of the original jeeps, tanks, and aircraft!
The Bad Guys (Axis) and Good Guys (Allies) in all their glory!
All of the classic WWII weapons!
Gameplay experiences that are both exciting, realistic, and true to the original experience!
State of the art graphics engine!
There is no other way to say it - this game is destined for greatness! Write it down in the history books - Battlefield 1942 is more than a noteworthy and significant event in the annals of gaming - it's a legend in the making!
Yeah there was lag, but . . .

When I first downloaded the multiplayer demo, I found that there was a lot of lag. Even when connecting to servers where the ping was low. However, through experimenting, I found it was my computer. Strange even though I have a 1800xp athlon with 512 ddr. I was running with a geforce2 mx200. I had been in the market for a better video card (newer), and I bought a ATI Radeon 7500. After installing, I found that the lag had gone away. Maybe the lag issue comes from the fact that this game has extensive detail, and my previous card, which I must admit wasn't half bad, just couldn't keep up. Or maybe the code isn't kosher with NVidia. I'm not trying to promote ATI, certainly both cards are wonderful. I am just telling you what I did to fix my situation. Also, they have a multiplayer patch out now for ASE (All Seeing Eye) (Get it, its worth the [money]) ASE is definetly greater than game spy. The ping times are accurate! Oh and they have also promised a linux version, or client, in the making. (Hopefullly not another Neverwinter promise:)) So that was it. Get a new card, or hope that they optimize code for NV. This is an amazing game. Surely will set a standard. (BTW at 3am on a monday morning there were over 8000 people online playing! This is gaming madness!)
