Worst single player imaginable!!!

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 2 / 8

Simple, where i used to live i didn't have internet, DONT BUY THIS GAME FOR THE SINGLE PLAYER!!! The AI's are more stupid than my mom's dog, litteraly. I know i have a great machine. In a single player game the bots usually just sit in one spot and twitch! or they will pick you off from across the battle field. There is nothing to the single player game.
It sucks!!!!

Updated Review of Retail Version

My earlier review discussed only the multi-player demo, which is still available from the Electronic Arts Battlefield 1942 website. This is an update which reflects one week of online gaming with the full version.

This is the game WW2 shooter fans have been waiting for. Not only can you pilot every single vehicle in the game (aerial, naval and mechanized), but you can also choose the style of play you prefer based on the map you choose to play in a given session. Want in your face action without those annoyingly accurate pilots (aka - me)? Fire up the Stalingrad or the Battle of the Bulge maps, no planes on those. Sick of the infantry combat grind and looking for a change of pace? Play the Midway map, where ship to ship combat rules the day. Want everything? Play Bocage, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, etc... . I think you get the idea. All in all there are 16 beautiful maps which fall into the above categories, which gives this game a replay value that is beyond measure. And oh yeah, it's pretty freakin' fun too!

To the reviewers who say this game is choppy/laggy, poorly executed, has mediocre graphics I sympathize with you. But I will say it is probably time for you to update your PC if you choose to purchase games of this caliber. Admittedly, I am running this on a high-end system (Pentium 4 2.0, Geforce 4 TI 4600) with a cable modem, so I have absolutely none of those problems and have to say that with the proper system this game is the most visually impressive WW2 multi-player shooter I have ever seen (yes, it even beats MOHAA and Wolfenstein). The view distances, the map sizes, and visual details of the building exteriors and interiors (such as the church in the Battle of the Bulge level, incredible) are amazing.

Bottom line, the best online first person shooter available.

A cool game!

I really like this game alot, but unfortunately, the AI still lacks in singleplayer mode. Adn usually, if you don't do most of the killing, you lose. But it is still fun and very intense and you get to play both sides. It takes a little while to beat the singleplayer game. The multiplayer game is also very cool. Your basically playing the same maps as in singleplayer. But there are a few annoying things. Like when you are the allies trying to land on the beach, you can control the battleship and shoot the big guns that are on the battleship. Ths problem is you always have someone who wants to drive the battleship around and then you have alot farther to go to land on the beach. Or someone always shooting those guns and when they do that, they typically blow up their own teamates more than enemy. Another thing thats annoying is the vehicle situation. I have a cable modem, but I always seem to have to wait at the beginning of every map to respawn. By then, all of the vehicles are gone. That gets annoying since all anyone does is drive around in the vehicles all of the time. There aren't alot of battles involving man against man. The last thing that bothers me is all of the patches you have download. In the 2 months I have had this game, I have had to download 2 patches just to play on line. One day, I it kept asking me if wanted to update, so I said yes and it froze my computer twice. After downloading patch off the internet, I could play on-line again, but about 3 weeks later, I coudln't get on and had to download another patch. But overall, this game is fun to play once you get in get to play. There are alot of other vehicles you can us like jeeps, tanks, and airplanes (though I cant get the hang of airplanes). I really did like this (despite some complaints I said here) and both the singleplayer and multiplayer are cool. Not the best FPS ever, but definitley a good one.

Best online WWII game

Battlefield 1942 is a great game, you get to fly planes, drive tanks, ships, jeeps, and use alot of weapons. This game is best when played online. The single player isnt that good because the enemys and your soldiers are all dumber than rocks. If your looking for single player get Call of Duty.

This is great! I haven't stopped playing...

The concept behind this game is great. WW II. All theatre of the war. Islands, beaches, deserts, woods, winter... Planes, tanks, half tracks, jeeps, bombers, battleships, landing craft... Everything can be controlled.

It's awesome. The only down side is you need a pretty hefty machine to run it. I am running a P3/650 with 256 meg RAM, GEFroce 256 with 32 mag RAM video card and a SoundBlaster Live! sound card. Even with that, I have to have all the settings down to the minimum in order to keep it from becoming choppy.

EA has released the first patch and are promising the second patch in the near future.

The game comes with a single player campaign and an instant battle. But, it's real strength is the online multi player. It can support up to 64 players at one time. It is a client server game, not peer to peer. It has a built in interface to a master server that keep track of all the registered servers. Right now, there are usually 850 - 900 servers online everyday with about 9,000 players.

There are about 15 maps available. The maps vary in size from pretty small and chaotic (Omaha Beach) the very large and strategic (El Alamein). The interface to the controls are very simple. It is still considered a first person shooter, but there is a lot of simulation in it as well... Planes, tanks, machinegun bunkers, AA guns...

I am not normally interested in first person shooters. They all seem to be Quake knockoff with better graphics and sound. But this one is different. There are so many things to do. So many ways to play. If EA can stay up with the patches, this one should become on of the big hits on the Internet.

Lot's of fun!!!

Great game with even greater potential in the future

After reading some of the negative reviews, I felt compelled to write a review of my own for the game. First off, in general I dislike FPS games as they are typically very shallow and monotonous. BF1942 is a bit of a change from the normal mold and offers a much wider variety of gameplay. There are numerous vehicles/planes to use and several different classes of infantry to play, all with different strategies and strengths/weaknesses. This helps keep the game fresh, as if you get tired of being an assault infantry, you can take a break and go on some bombing runs, or sit back and take out enemy planes with anti-aircraft, or hide and do some sniping. Teamwork also plays a significant role in the game. You really do have to work with your teammates to some degree in order to win the game. Going solo Rambo-style might get you a few kills, but it will do little to secure any flags for your team and inevitably will just get you killed. Unfortunately the game is still fairly new, and there are a lot of rambos/hero-wanna-bes in the game still. As time progresses hopefully there will be more more solid teamwork at play instead of individualism.

To address some of the negative remarks about the game.
1) Yes, the computer AI currently stinks. But this is a multiplayer game, not a single player game. You can play SP if you want to, but MP is where the fun is. So AI really isn't much of an issue for me since I don't play single player.

2) I don't really think I have that beefy of a system (AMD 1600+, geforce ti4200), but my graphics are very smooth at 1152x862 and every graphic option at high. It was flawless at 1024x768. At 1152 it is a tad less smooth, but still perfectly acceptable. There are several fixes for choppiness that some of the complainers might not have tried. This includes turning on hardware accelleration for sound (by default its off) and also reducing the sound quality from the default.

3) Lag. I have never had a problem with lag. As long as you have 150 ping or under to the server its not been an issue with me. This may be back if you use 56k, but broadband is fine. Plenty of different servers so you can find one that works.

4) I have never crashed once, so I can't comment on the problems others have had in this area.

5) getting the patch. Not sure why others have had problems - I downloaded it easily on my first day.

Also, the patch 1.2 is currently in development to further tweak the lag code + some other stuff.

So overall this is a very fun game - this coming from someone who doesn't like FPS's usually. It does have a bit of a learning curve, and you need to learn to work with your teammates to truly be effective.

I got this game for my birthday, and I have played it online literally EVERY SINGLE DAY since then. The weapons system is great, the vehicle operations are seamless, and the general feel of the game is amazing. I love talking on the phone with my friend while shooting him in the back point black with an anti-tank rocket. If you like online gaming, first person shooters, or World War II, you NEED THIS GAME!

No Better Game

None Better, I always play online, there is usually at least 10,000 players at any given time, not everyone is team oriented, but some are. I even joined a clan where everyone is. Simply best game out, i dont even play MOHAA anymore.

Great expansion of FPS concept

Review based upon SP and MP Demos...final version will obviously be cleaned up and optimized more than likely. Or at least until the 1st and 2nd patches come out :-)

This game expands well upon the popular First Person Shooter concept along with some mixing in of opting for 3rd person views.

PROS-
-Great mix of land, sea, and air weapon platforms. Finally able to use all the vehicles and weapons found within a more realistic battle environment.
-Incredible Sound Effects...the sound of artillery strikes for example really pulls you into the environment.
-Realistic open terrain made to scale (need to ride in vehicles to get anywhere in time)
-Shooting physics are also realistic (need to arc longer distance shots)

CONS

-Need very high end system to fully enjoy the game
-Complicated controls
-Infantry mode controls do not allow you to use the right/left arrow keys to turn your body...it only allows you to strafe left and right. I'm very used to using all my arrow keys at once along with my mouse for fine tuning to turn and move rather than strafe ALL the time. This has been my biggest frustration with BF1942 since I'm so used to playing other FPS games.

OVERALL

All around great game that advances the FPS genre very nicely. WWII fans will especially love it. I would give it 5 stars if the controls scheme were cleaned up a bit and allowed flexibility in the turn vs. strafe
