The first thing I noticed about this game was the great graphics. The next thing that I fell in love with were the believable characters including the main Character April Ryan. The game takes place in the future and whats really cool about that is that its a realistic future world that still is familiar to todays society. This game is very fun and keeps you thinking. You will fall in love with it!

Adventure games at their finest

The Longest Journey is, bar none, the best adventure game I have ever played, mainly because it has such an intriguing and well-written plot. Too often, adventure games have a loosely conceived plotline and poorly voiced characters to support a string of nonsensical puzzles. In this game, the puzzles are the least intriguing part. Don't get me wrong, the puzzles are interesting and challenging (often too challenging for a casual gamer...but that's what walk-throughs are for), but the beauty of this game is that it is a story. The story is LONG, as you may have guessed, but it is also fascinating. I often played long into the night because I simply couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next! The characters are well-developed -- you really feel like you know the central character by the end -- and the humor is very well done. I'll admit that I was a little irritated by Crow, the sidekick, but everything was was great. Of course, the fact that the game is fairly linear and won't let you totally screw up (you can't die, and you can't move past the point of getting a necessary item) helps with the frustration factor. I highly recommend the game -- for serious gamers who want to figure it all out themselves, but also for people who just want a good story.

Fun. original, but not perfect

The Longest Journey is an amazing game, in more than one way. First of all, its storyline is nothing short of epic. Changing from the middle ages to the future or a fantasy-surrounding, from innercity squares to outlandish dockyards, it is sure a long journey. The makers have put a lot of thought in writing this script, and it shows. Its story is compelling and original. The graphics are quite beautiful, I would say you can't get them much better. And heroine April Ryan makes for a nice change in action hero - she's charming and fresh. So far the strong points. There are some weaker points too. Navigation within the screen is somewhat slow and cumbersome. This can get worse if your computer is not the very latest. TLJ is very choosy when it comes to computerconfiguration. With an up to date 3D- and soundcard and its latest drivers, it should be no problem however. As the story evolves, so doe the inventory of things you pick up on the way. It can be quite confusing what item to use, and for what purpose. The actions you're suppose to perform, can be farfetched or downright stupid, to say the least - Imagine buying a can of coke, having to put it in a paintshaker, so that later on it will explode in someones face.... I suppose TLJ biggest drawback is the enormous amount of dialogue, which you cannot skip properly. You have to sit back and listen to long, very, very long dialogues, some just for fun or so. It can be very tedious and a test for your patience. There's quite a lot of unneccesary swearing too. Having said that, I would surely recommend TLJ, for its an original and beautiful game - April Ryan will surely enter the gallery of great videogame characters - even if the voiceacting is in fact below standard.

Best Game of its type ever!

Simply the best game of its type ever! Lots of interesting puzzles, character interaction, and plot twists and turns. The story line is simply fascinating, and April Ryan becomes a very real person to you during the course of play. The ending is such a refreshing change from the usual game meeting with some almost impossible to defeat foe who must be vanquished in some tedious battle. The game proves that it is possible to introduce real personality in a computer game. The only complaint is the game is difficult to install, but it's well worth the effort.

Waiting anxiously for more like it.

The game took me right into it. Like I WAS there. It's been over a week since I finished, sad to say, and I'm in grief. The game earns 5 stars from me and I want more of it. Highly recommend this game to adventure/explorer gamers.

when my husband got me this game for christmas, i wasn't sure that i would like it. the graphics and description on the back made the game seem dark & foreboding, and i enjoy games like grim fandango and the monkey island series because of the humor that they infuse into the game in addition to the puzzles to solve. once i started it, though, i was hooked. there was humor in the game as well. and the puzzles made sense, as opposed to some of them in the other adventure games. there were some loose ends that never were tied up, though. i wasn't quite sure where the character of the bartender fit in, or what happened to him after the whole thing was over. it might have been nice if they had shown his reaction to the whole thing, especially since he seemed to be a major character in her life. (& that's the only reason i'm giving this game four stars, rather than 5)

Visually Amazing

If anyone is debating whether to get this game or not, just go get it! It's amazing! April Ryan, the main character, talks like a normal person and acts just like an 18 year old should.

One of my favourite parts of this game is April's diary, after something interesting happens, you can read what April's thought were, and some are very hilarious!

The only beef I have with this game is the amount of reading. I'm not against reading, but in some parts of the game, you sit and read, with no choice to leave the computer or you'll miss something, for 10-15 minutes or more at a time.

Other than this, a total A+! I wish there were more games like it!

I have played all the famous, infamous and ehm, well, some weird cheap productions of adventure games, all beacause I like the genre so much.
And The Longest Journey outclasses them all.The plot, the characters and then the graphics and the enchating music just add up to an amazing gaming experience.
I am waiting for a sequel, and untill I see TLJ 2,I will come back to the game and enjoy...over and over again.

I couldn't stop playing!!!

Wow! This game was spectacular! Some of the adventure games I've played recently couldn't hold a candle to this one. Graphics were great - not 360 degrees, but there's no need! Great renderings of each scene. I prefer 3rd person games, as this one is, but the main character in this game could have used a little bit of softening around the edges (anti-aliasing?), but it's great to see who you're controling. The storyline was extremely unique - a bit long winded in places - there were times when I was sitting there listening to 15 minutes of history/stories/folktales, which were not always necessarily needed to complete the game. But it made for an interesting story, still. There is a bit of foul language, (reference to the ever popular 4 letter words), but don't let that hinder you! The dialogue sounded very professionally done - none of that "just read the words" stuff - very authentically spoken.

The game lasts for ever, hence, "the longest journey", but I can't tell you how glad I was that the game didn't end in 3 or 4 sittings. I think I put about 40 hours into this one. The only major drawback was that they could have put more challenging puzzles in, and less dialogue. There were a few puzzles that took a little bit of time, and only 2 that required the assistance of a "cheat" to help me out, but most all of the puzzles are self explanatory - meaning, they relate to the game and are obvious what the goal is - not like some games, where there's a puzzle just stuck in the middle of the game with no relation to the game whatsoever. I'm overall thoroughly pleased with the game, and thinking of playing it again!! The musical score was great, and there's even a bonus that allows you to hear script reading goof-ups (outtakes) by the actors, and preliminary graphic renderings of the story characters and places, plus additional music scores. No wonder it was named the game of the year!!! Very pleased, highly recommended.
