If you are considering buying this game but are apprehensive because of complaints of too much dialogue or walking time, there's an extremely easy way to fix it so the game goes much quicker:
-there is a SUBTITLES option in the options menu
-you can press ESCAPE to skip through animations or dialogue

With the subtitles on you can just read through the dialogues, then press escape when you're done- it makes things go waaaay quicker. Escape also allows you to skip walking around and other animations, so it takes barely any time to go long distances. That said, you have to be careful not to miss something because you're going too fast, and its worth it to listen to the dialogue every once in a while because its (for the most part) well written and generally well acted as well.

This is definitely one of the better games I've ever played, and worth the time just for the story. It was very easy to become attached to the characters- I soon found myself whistling for Crow even when he was not needed in the hopes of having a little chat. :-) The puzzles are generally fairly straightforward, with only a very few being obtuse to the point of annoyance. Some of them are actually a little contrived, but like I said- what really made the game was the personalities. Extremely enjoyable and highly recommended.

It's been a while since I've played an adventure game, and I'm glad to say that this one lives to its expectation. The pacing is wonderful, the graphics are done fairly well, the voice acting is good.

The game is mature, intelligent, and most of all, fun!

The Longest Journey blows most adventure games away!

I received this game as a gift from my sister who has a friend who played it and claimed it was "the best adventure game ever". I was skeptical at first and considered taking it back, but then I figured I'd give it a try. Immediately I fell in love with it. The characters are very likeable and realistic, especially April Ryan (and Crow). They all have personality and wit that helps make the game come alive. Also, the storyline is wonderful and interesting, and the 2 worlds are fun to explore. This truly was a remarkable gaming experience, and I would recommend this to anyone.

We found the story of The Longest Journey to be engrossing, but thought the game play was lacking. There are almost no puzzles of the sort found in Myst. Advancing in the game consists of talking to everyone and determining which inventory item will work in the situation. It took quite us quite a while to finish only because the speeches take such a long time. The background graphics are excellent, though the rendering of some of the characters is poor (e.g. some have no fingers, just mitts). The language in the game is needlessly very blue. We had to ban our children from the room while playing.

this game had lots of puzzles; some were pretty tough, especially since you're bouncing between worlds. but overall, a really good adventure game. one thing about this game that is so awesome is that you cannot die. you can try all sorts of things and you can't be killed; which is nice because you'll never be put back to the beginning of the game or scene.

I did enjoy the game. But...

It was really very talky, especially at the beginning. My mind wandered.

I prefer a logical puzzle and some were of the "throw in the kitchen sink" variety, which had me searching for the hint sheets. I would never have gotten that first key without them.

In general I did enjoy the goings on of April, and really liked Crow. The surprise ending left me wondering if I'd missed something.

Fun for adventure fans...

Imagine: one day you wake up, only to find yourself apparently still dreaming. Instead of lying in your nice cozy bed, you're in the middle of a vast landscape of cliffs and canyons, with a strangely colorful sky. And there's a four foot egg dangling precariously over a cliff, held by the root of a cranky talking tree. You'd think you'd gone nuts, right? That's exactly what April Ryan thinks when she gets dropped into that situation. And that is why The Longest Journey is a good game....

What makes the game stand out is the believability of the young heroine. Though as a teenager in Stark, April has futuristic technology at her disposal, she still has to deal with many of the same problems students have today -- all-nighters before a deadline; sleazy upper-class boys; managing to cover rent, food, and fun, on a shoestring budget; and so on. ... She does not have any experience that would prepare her to deal with being dropped unceremoniously -- in her nightclothes, no less -- into a magical quest. She reacts with a mix of skepticism at the absurdity of the notion, anger at having been yanked out of her more-or-less happy existence, and terror at the possible threat to her life....

The game's strongest suit is probably the background scenery -- the art is stunning, especially in Arcadia, where sweeping vistas and fantastic cities spring to life on the screen. ...

If you are accustomed to games that provide action and mayhem, you will probably be frustrated by the slower pace, and by the puzzles, which are occasionally whimsical, and often intricate. But, if you enjoy a good story, dislike excessive violence, and like puzzles that demand careful thinking and patience -- and especially if you're a student, dealing with the same problems April faces back in the "real world" -- then The Longest Journey may be just the thing to give you hours of entertainment, mystery, and maybe just a little bit of inspiration.

I played this game every chance I had since I opened the box. I actually didn't want the game to end. The dialogue between April and the other characters could, at times be extremely long. However, as the game unfolded I looked foreward to every interaction with April's...uh...friends. The puzzles were challenging indeed, but just another facet of the game, not the focus. All in all, extremely engaging and entertaining. Graphics excellent, interface easy to work with, gameplay and theme original. Mild adult language. Not suited for children. Highly recommendable for adult and older teens. Unique and refreshing adventure!

simply put, a great game, both thoughtful and fun. if you
are looking for an adventure minus blood & guts that will challenge
and surprise, this is it. can't recommend it highly enough.
