Great Game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: August 06, 2001
Author: Amazon User

I think this game was rated a little unfairly in some of the other reviews. OK, OK, OK Shure this game starts out a little slow (one of it's only cons) But the reward for your hard work is great. After about what? a hour and a half The plot is so addicting that you can't stop playing. 3D games are notorious for having poor background animation but good charictor animation. This game however excells in both airas giving a nice balanced look to the game. The voice-overs in this game are not the absolute best they could be but the excelent script kind of blocks that so it is barly noticeable. The "langauge" in this game isn't that bad at all, in other reviews people say it is unnessicary but I think it is an important part of the charictor developement. Overall this game is very good (4 and a half stars) Strongly recomended but not for lazy people looking for instant gratification...

Excellent adventure epic

Somewhat repeating what others have written, this game has beautiful graphics, an engaging si-fi/fantasy story, wonderful voice acting and a fairly good balance of dialog to puzzles. TLJ is a very involving interactive story, so if you know that before-hand and enjoy this style of game it comes highly recommended. One caveat that dropped my rating to 4 stars is the wanton vulgarity of one or two characters that was (IMHO) entirely unnecessary and excessive.

Adventure Games Be Saved!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

I thought that the adventure game genre had died... then Escape from Monkey Island was released... and it was good, but I was used to the dark adventure like Noctropolis... and when I found out about The Longest Journey when I was visiting the States, it totally blew my mind! I went and bought it right away, and haven't regretted the decision for a second. April is a fun character, although her character model in the FMVs leaves something to be desired - she looks like she got beaten in the face one too many times - but the game is otherwise great. I want more Longest Journey's and less Quake's!

An Adventure Between Reality And Something Beauitiful

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This game starts in a place long long ago in a time there was two worlds instead of one. April the artsic pupil who weaves in and out of her creative mind smack damb into reality. April is the main character in the game. She is an 18 who just left her family to get away from her abusvie father. She resides in Venice Califorina and is living in a border house. She is a painter trying to keep up with her art studies.

The game takes you to two worlds, one of magic and one more like our world plain and unmagical. The magical world is Acradia and the other is Starik. April first finds out that she is to travel to the other world through her dreams and she was told by a crystal dragon that she is her daughter and will always be her daughter and that she is to restore chaos to order.

The game is very moving, it lets you into the charters thoughts, feelings, and her mind.

Everyone will like this game and will spend many hours after game play think about the game.

Not really the LONGEST journey

I was somewhat disappointed in this game. It's very much like reading a book or watching a movie. There weren't enough puzzles to solve. When you were given a choice of what to say to someone, you know it really doesn't matter, because April won't do anything she's not supposed to do. I'm a huge fan of adventure/puzzle games of this sort, and I guess I just expected more.

On the plus side, you do get very caught up in the story, and the puzzles are challenging but solvable.

The Best Journey of its Kind

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

In the style of Beyond Atlantis and Amerzone, the Longest Journey is one of the best graphic adventure I have played for a while. Not only graphics are very nice, but there is something about the personalities of the characters that live long after you finished playing the game. You are this very modern girl who lives in between worlds, the world of science and the world of dreams. In order to keep the balance right between those two worlds, you meet those great cute creatures telling you their history and legends, and of course you are always very central to it all. I am very happy to be able to share my opinion of this game, as this sort of quality and user friendly interface does not come often. (Stress free, you can never die! But you will enjoy it for days, as it is a long journey...)

Best Game Ever

Ever since I was young, I've been playing adventure games (kings quest, police question, space quest, and monkey island.. blah blah). But since the fall of the entire adventure genre, I've turned my back on adventure games. However, I had the sudden urge to buy one all the sudden and I came across "The Longest Journey" Demo. I played it and I was like "WOW!!" Never had there been such a beautiful adventure game with all the fun and innocence of the "good ol' days" of adventure games. So the following day I went down to the store to buy it, and from the moment I installed it on the computer, I loved it.

There are FOUR CDs. Very long, very detailed, a dynamic story line, and lots of video (like an old Wing Commander game). Though at times its true, the dialog can get a bit too long, but it is all worth it in the end...it makes sense...a lot of sense.

The story line itself is like a good book. And when I finished playing this game, I felt a great sadness as I had finished the best game I've ever played in my life. Stayed up days playing it, 4 hours of sleep a day maybe at the most--it was that good.

one word of advice if your not sure: TRY THE DEMO. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. TRY IT AND YOU WILL BUY IT.

Decent, entertaining, foolproof and easy

The plot of this game was well thought out and the graphics were gorgeous. In the beginning, this seemed to be promising for 3 dimensional fully realized science fiction world. Unfortunately, the game failed to deliver completely.
I had two main problems with this game. The first problem is that this game is incredibly easy. I found myself only looking up hints 2 or 3 times, and this was usually because of a false pixels that fail to change from an eye icon to an interact icon. There is no way to die in this game, and there is no way for you to trap yourself. The trapping yourself part is good, because it's no fun to have to restore a saved game from a couple hours ago because you forgot to close a door. But, as a veteran of Sierra's old games, I have to say this game lacks the adrenalin pumping thrill and true warmth and character development from say, Gabriel Knight, the King's Quest, or the Space Quest series. The chase scene towards the end of the game was laughable and ridiculously easy and badly done. I recommend Phantasmagoria, the first 1 if you want to see a really well done chase scene.
April also failed to deliver completely for me. Her character is for the most part warm hearted, but she gets a little flaky around the edges. Her constant insecurity is refreshing, but it is also irritating. She lacks Gabriel's humor and style, or Grace's wit. She is no where near as original as a tortured Shadow Hunter (Schattenhager) discovering his past or even a clutzy janitor that fell asleep in a broom closet while the ship was under attack. But, she is still better than Kate from the lovely epic "Syberia" with her annoying cellphone and her Bloomingdales conversations. ("Oscar, little retarded boy, pick up that icky, mucky oar for me so I don't have to get my hands dirty".)
Some noteworthy characters who are pretty witty and fleshed out and worth mentioning are Crow, and the man from Stark who got trapped in Arcadia, (I can't remember his name).
I did get all the way through this game, but towards the end I was playing it just to finish it more than playing it because I cared how it ended.
In closing, I will say that this game is definetly worth checking out. I just would never pay more than 20 dollars for it. It's done a lot better than most of the games that have been put out since Sierra stopped making adventure games, but I stop short of calling it a genuine classic.

One of the best adventure games ever made.

The Longest Journey, is probably one of the best adventure game's of all time. It's rich plot, and detail, dives your right into the life of April Ryan. This game is one of the most amazing, I've ever played. Plus, the adventure seems like it goes on forever, because of all the many twists and turns.
This game really is fantastic.

Greatest Adventure Game of All Time?

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This could be the greatest adventure game of all time. I picked this one up after finishing Dreamfall. The voice acting is the best I've ever heard and the story line was great. April Ryan has to be one of the best game characters ever made. It's not because she is special, it's because she is so perfectly ordinary. The graphics are old and hard on the eyes but 7 years will do that. This game has very little action in it so stay away if that's what you want. I did enjoy Dreamfall a bit more but that's mostly because it was newer. Make sure you get the game patch from the official website and don't forget to check the voice outtakes after you finish the game. They are really funny. I hope a 3rd one comes out soon. They really left us hanging in Dreamfall.

My All time favorite PC games:

Battlefield 1942
Baldurs Gate 2
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Half-Life 2
The Longest Journey
