A Story-Only Game

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 5

We found the story of The Longest Journey to be engrossing, but thought the game play was lacking. There are almost no puzzles of the sort found in Myst. Advancing in the game consists of talking to everyone and determining which inventory item will work in the situation. It took quite us quite a while to finish only because the speeches take such a long time. The background graphics are excellent, though the rendering of some of the characters is poor (e.g. some have no fingers, just mitts). The language in the game is needlessly very blue. We had to ban our children from the room while playing.

Great game!

Excellent graphics and fun to play. The puzzles haven't been very difficult so far (just starting Chapter 6), but most are hard enough to make the game interesting and challenging. I just have 2 complaints; too much dialogue and too much swearing. If it weren't for the swearing I'd buy it for my 13 year old niece. She would love the storyline, especially with a female heroine.

Game of the Year

All I can say is wow. This game has totally blown me away! It makes Final Fantasy look like childs play and could very well become the best adventure series of all time if there are sequels released. You are at complete control to interact with everything around you; it is amazing. I have not even completed the first chapter and I am in total awe. I reccomend this game to any gamer looking for something refreshingly different than every other game on the market this year. Only place that I can offer some caution is the space you'll need on your hard drive; there are minimal installation options, but for the full experience, delete some stuff to free up some space. I think you've all been meaning to give up on Sim City 2000 by now anyway...

The Slowest Journey!

But well worth the time!! Yes, this game took its time getting started! April's nightmares only hinted at what was about to happen!! Meeting strange people like Cortez, who not only looks strange but says strange and fantastic things, was only the beginning of what was to befall April. She was grabbed from her bedroom apartment and set on a fantastic and wonderful Journey (thus the title) to imagined places-one was even underwater and the final place took place out in space! WOW!! And all the characters you get to meet-animals as well as people were so interesting and fun to read about. It's a great read as well as to play. The solutions to some of the puzzles were not easy to figure out-I had to gaze at my hints sheet several times before I got it! (Sometimes you as April would have to go to a certain place or talk to a certain person or have a certain object before the solution could even be attempted!!) This action took the most time and was even frustrating toward the end when the puzzles got more complicated and even seemed to suddenly 'bunch together'! But in the end, I came away feeling good and happy and wanting more!! I very much hope there is a sequel in the works-I'm hooked!! A must see, a must play, a must buy game! Sincerely, Jay.

beautiful game

If your looking for a game filled with rich graphics and original music, this is a definate must see. Vivid and breathtakingly beautiful at times, the game is only marred by the profanity they felt it required. This is limited to a few sections and having played through it once, there are sections and puzzles quite suitable for even younger kids. April does have a big chip on her shoulder about something and that never gets resoved to my satisfaction. Some of the puzzles and their solutions are quite humerous. Another fault is it was a bit easy for the serious puzzle solver and won't be much of a challenge. Overall an enjoyable and fun game.

THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED

Let me start off by saying i hate this game.....because it has ruined all other PC Games for me. I have never experienced a game that really effected me, took me inside the charcters' mind and really live her life. The graphics are the best I have ever seen in a video game and the plot...one word WOW! The dialogues can a be little long but you can skip them and then read the transcripts later. There's also April's Dairy which can help you figure out your next step or just get her opinion on some of the characters she has met. The characters you meet well, you become connected to them, and there's so many!!! You get to choose conversations so you can control your role in the game. This game is for more mature audiences, it has an adult sense of humor, so if Monkey Island amuses, this game is not for you! Please go out and get this game, so that you can be spoiled by what real PC Games should look like!

The Longest Journey is awesome. There really isnt more that needs to be said. It is a trip through the eyes of April Ryan and it never ever gets boring. Have fun and live life through April for a little while, its completely worth it!

best adventure game ive ever played

I started playing adventure games with my mom back around the age of five or so, but lately I havnt been able to find any worth playing. Suddenly, I came across TLJ and my faith in the industry was completly reawakened. The storyline is captavating and envolving, the world is intriguing and addicting. Its not exactly fast pace, and you have to listen to ALOT of dialog, but that was ok for me. It was like reading a really good book, with graphical rendition. I couldnt put it down. All in all, it was the best game I have played in along time of any genre. Considering how well it set itself up for a sequel, I hope we get one soon.

I loved this game

While I had some glitches with my Windows 2000 OS, this game was one of the richest, most interesting games I've ever played. I loved the story-line, and the graphics were as good as I've seen, without being so heavy handed that the logic & play suffered. April Ryan is a much more complex character than other role-playing women I've seen, and the story really does move along. The challenges are just that-- challenging-- but they are also DO-able. You don't get stuck not being able to figure something out and quitting in frustration. Things tend to click along at a fairly quick pace sometimes, and sometimes they are harder and require some real thought.

I would only hope that they would do another adventure for April...

Deep story. Great game

Even though it will not qualify as a challenging game, I beleive it is one the best ever adventure games. Tha story plot is so deep and rich that it's very hard to quit playing once you have started. Most (propably all) of the challenges are LOGICAL and in harmony with the enviroment, the characters and/or the particular situations in wich you get involved. That makes also most of them easy, I concede that, but I still remember frustration piled up while playing the so called adventure games were you have to figure out the most stupid and silly puzzles you could imagine. I beleive this was the reason this genre went down in the last years.
Just to give the reader a reference, for my taste, the jewels of the adventure games have been: The Monkey Islands (the four of them), Grim Fandango (The most original ever), The Tex Murphy Series (Is there any one come out or Microsoft have already Killed him) and, now, The Longest Journey.
So, if you feel at home trying to figure out how to place 8 queens in a chessboard when nobody is playing and for no purpose, look somewere else, but, if your up for a beautifull and amazing graphic adventure, do not hesitate a second and run to get this game.
I hope for the continuation as it's implied in the epilogue!!
