I was a fan of the first installment of Rogue Squadron, but I'm not impressed with where the series has gone. The main problem for me is visibility: TIE fighters are tiny and almost impossible to see (especially in space battles), making taking them too much of a challenge. They added a targeting computer feature that helps a bit, but you lose points the longer you use the targeting computer.

Overall, I found portions of this game to be fun, but they need to brighten up the graphics to make it more playable.

This game is a great game but it is kind of hard. It has great graphics and sound.You can either play as Wedge Antellies or Luke Skywalker. Pretty good combination if you ask me! There are a bunch of unlockable ships so the replay value is great. There are also medals and points you earn at the end of each level on how good you do (bronze,silver,or gold medals) and you can unlock "secret" levelswith those points. There are also different views of the ship you are in, such as third person and cockpit views so you feel like you are in the game not just playing it! I would give it five stars but it is pretty hard (which is probably a good thing). Anyway, great game, buy it, you won't regret it.

Let me state from the get go that I am a huge Star Wars fan. I remember seeing the original Star Wars in the theaters (sans the "Episode IV" tag line) in 1977. Sadly, the Rogue Squadron series, in my opinion, has been a disappointment.

The Positives. Graphically, there is probably not a better presentation on any home console to date. I love the overlaying of graphics with original movie footage. The detail it provides is amazing for the current generation of consoles. The sound presentation is also spot on. The sound effects of the films are accurately represented and give a genuine feel of wild dogfights in space.

Sadly, it is the dogfigts that ultimately doomed this game and the series for me. Too often I found myself lost in space not knowing where to go or what exactly to do. I often had trouble reading the scope at the top of the screen, would find myself flying sideways, or flying to far away from the action and then having the game reset my position. Appearantly I relied too much on the targeting computer (since I couldn't see anything) and would then be penalized for it.

The final nails in the coffin? Taking down AT-ATs (again) and those cursed escort missions! I just can't handle having to babysit poor CPU A.I. while having to fend off hordes of TIEs and other assorted Imperial weaponry. No thank you.

In my opinion, in the console market, the best Star Wars are Battlefront, Battlefront 2, and Knights of the Old Republic. The Battlefront series has a much better Star Wars feel of battle and Knights of the Old Republic has an amazing storyline. If you have a PS2 and Xbox (for Knights) I suggest these three classics. If you all have is a Gamecube and you want to play Star Wars, well, have fun . . . .

I see many other reviews raving about the graphics. They're right. Stunning. But to use an analogy - A beautiful woman with a poor personality, makes for a lousy date. This Star Wars games is very beautiful, but poor personality. FLAW: This game is just too hard. Remember the Star Wars scene where Luke loops rope around Walkers? It's in the game, but insanely difficult. It took me about 30 attempts. Not fun.

Then I went against some shield & planet base. 10 minutes of boredom cruising through asteroids, followed by 1 minute of insane punishment by killer guns. Dead. Repeat 10 more minutes of asteroid boredom. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Argh. Then I had to kill a Star Destroyer! One tiny fighter against a Destroyer?!?!? Nuts. 6 hours later & about 100 attempts, I just barely beat it with about 1% life left. It was frustrating, NOT fun. Now I'm on some planet where I get killed off in about 3 minutes. I've repeated this level another 50 times already, and I made some progress, but I'm not enjoying the time wasted. Isn't that what gaming's about? FUN? Well, this ain't.

I'm dumping this game. Frankly, I'd rather go replay Colony Wars or Starfox or Elite. They may not look as pretty, but they make for better dates. All were challenging w/o making you feel like a hampster stuck in an infinite rolling wheel. And they were FUN.

The Gamecube's best launch title, hands down

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (2001.) The second game in the Rogue Squadron series.

INTRODUCTION:
Over the years, Star Wars games have been a mixed bag. Although the films are the ultimate in science fiction, no one can deny that when it comes to video games, there are several good and bad titles alike. One of the best things to happen to Star Wars gaming, though, came in late 1998 - Rogue Squadron for the Nintendo 64. The game was the ultimate Star Wars combat flight simulator ever released on the consoles. And when rumors spread that a sequel was going to be a launch game for the Gamecube, it's not surprising that fans had high expectations. Were those expectations met? Read on for my review of Rogue Leader.

OVERVIEW:
Rogue Leader was released in November of 2001 as a Gamecube launch title. The game is one player, and features objective-based flight simulator combat action.

REVIEW:
I loved the original Rogue Squadron and was really looking forward to the sequel? My verdict? It was worth waiting for. Gone is the sluggish, choppy, pop-up-heavy animation of the old Nintendo 64, and in come high-resolution graphics that are nothing short of beautiful. When the Gamecube first arrived, I was awe-struck at how good its graphics were, and that was due in no small part to early footage I saw from this game. Essentially, it plays like its N64 predecessor. You go to different locales in the Star Wars universe and participate in objective-based combat. One interesting addition to the game is the concept of a command cross, accessed with the D-Pad on the controller. Using this, you can actually give your wingmen orders! And the fact that the Gamecube controller is so much more comfortable than that old N64 piece of junk will make your experience with this game all the more enjoyable. There are also some ships that weren't playable in the old game, as well as plenty of unlockable ones. If you go above and beyond the call of duty in your missions, you'll earn medals, which can go toward unlocking secret ships and levels. Where this game succeeds, it succeeds beautifully. This is Star Wars aerial combat the way it was meant to be experienced. Of course, there are a few flaws here. Length is a major one. The game is only ten standard missions long, so a die-hard Star Wars fan like myself will cruise through it in a matter of hours. Flaws aside, though, this was the Gamecube's best launch title.

EDITION NOTES:
It didn't take long for this game to become a Gamecube Greatest Hits title and to get a massive price drop. If you're a Gamecube owner and you don't have this one yet, there's no time like the present to go out and buy it!

OVERALL:
Overall this is aerial combat action at its very best. Hell, you don't really even have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy this game (although fans of the universe will get the biggest kick out of it.) I highly recommend this game and its sequel, Rebel Strike, to all Gamecube owners.

Rogue Leader was originally a launch title for the Nintendo Gamecube, and continued the franchise started by Rogue Squadron on the N64. The basic gameplay is something of an elevated arcade shooter. It's nowhere as in-depth as a flight sim, but it includes some situations where you'll need to do some genuine tactical thinking to get out alive (protecting convoys, destroying targets, etc). You'll have an infrared heads-up display and basic command over your wingmen, as well as an extra payload of bombs or torpedoes to get the job done. Missions range from new levels and environments to recreations of key scenes from the movies (Battle of Hoth, attack on the Death Stars).

What really turned Rogue Leader into a system seller was its stunning graphics. This is still one of the prettiest titles on the Gamecube, and comes the closest of any game to looking like Star Wars (with the possible exception of the sequel, Rebel Strike). The amount of detail is breathtaking, and the effects are solid. Nintendo lost a solid developer with the departure of Factor 5.

The only nitpick about this game is that it basically plays the same as the N64 original, and also the other Star Wars space shooters (Battle for Naboo, Starfighter). Graphics, framerate and audio have take a huge leap in quality, but the basic gameplay (and some of its limitations, like z-axis movement in space) is untouched. In that sense at times it feels like a tech demo souped up with fancy bells and whistles. But if that's it, then it's one of the most satisfying tech demos you'll ever play.
This is a must-have for all Gamecube owners, Star Wars fans or not.

This game is nice, the graphics are incredible, and it's got some fun star wars moments. However, there is one thing about this game that I despise. There is no way to turn off the invert look. I cannot play well with those controls, which resulted in me quitting the game before I could finish it. One small thing ruined this game for me and I consider it garbage. I give it 2 stars because of the graphics, sound and overall detail of the game. Too bad the lack of one control option kept it from getting 5 stars.

This game was xellant! The Hoth level was amazin', though AT-AT's are my fav vehichle in STAR WARS, and it was sad to see dem' tumble. The last level was fricken hard though, I still can't get that stew-pid "It's gettin' hot in here" line of Lando's out of my head. go to *********** and get the cheat code for the 1969 Buick. Yu won't regret it! the cockpit is stellur, and it's exit of the hanger has me ripping my sides with laughter every time. Too bad it dosent have a craft descprition like in rebel strike. "This raging vehicle from a galaxy far,far away has the weaponry to beat the foodoo out of Imperial forces...."

FIRST OFF THE GRAPHICS ARE STUNNING AND THE GAMPLAY IS GREAT! It controls like a dream and the war is great. THe battle from the movies are so cool and the way TIE fighters now explode is great pyrotechnics. SOunds are great and just everything is sensational. This game is one of the greatest games ever made! Wingmen commands are also super cool. Other games don't really have wingmen. This adds a slight realism. Playing as the ace-pilot Wedge Antilles is also very cool. My cons are only in the TIEi fighters, They are too sutpid. When I first played battle of ENDOR, I six TIE fighters crashed into me. I survived but that was just crap. Also the wingman don't do much except maybe knock out ten or fifteen TIE fighter before the level ends. They fly awkwardly and fire at enemies too slowly. The other Rebel pilots that are not your wingman don't do anything expcet take up space. They should be just like your wingman and actually do something. Also, again, you fight hundreds of TIE ifhgtrs and other ships alone. You do most of the work and destroy lik hundreeds of enemies. Not too realistic on that matter. The Imperial levels are great. Destroying X-wings and Y-wings and even A-wings is fun to do. THIS GAME IS GREAT!

Any Star Wars fan would lust over this!

Spectacular is the word which comes to mind when I think of this game. This was the first game I purchased for my Gamecube and was the main driving force for me getting a Gamecube.
The gameplay is truly great & you get to relive all the amazing Star Wars moments from the movies.
There are also plenty of extras to unlock & the game itself will test the best of videogamers. I did think it was a tad bit too difficult though. That was really the only downside to the game. Anyways, the game is now like $20, so I would get it.
Rogue Squadron II is definitely a classic you don't want to get rid of.
I also recommend Knights of the Old Republic (xbox)!
