Sometimes hard, sometimes too hard

Rogue Squadron 2 for Gamecube is a great game. I don't need to tell you how astounding the graphics are or how wonderful the sound is. It really is amazing. The control is simple and tight, and most of the missions are taken right out of the movie, which makes this more exciting for me.

However, the game is not without it's flaws. I see that many reviewers here thought that some of the levels where too hard. No, they weren't. They were darn near impossible!... the first time through. The Battle of Endor mission was crazy. It's far to easy to ram yourself into another ship, even if you bank slowly. I've also heard gamers complain about the Strike the Core mission. If you don't keep moving back and forth constantly, and if you don't keep up with the Falcon, you'll get ripped to pieces in a few seconds. Lastly, it's very difficult (almost impossible) to earn Gold Medals in all the missions.

This adds a large amount of challenge to the game. The challenge kept me coming back for more. Over the last two weeks, and with the help of a players guide (I didn't use a single cheat code), I managed to obtain all the gold medals in all 15 missions and I unlocked all the ships including Darth Vadar's Tie Advanced. I didn't spend all my time with this, I just kept at it in my spare time. Anyway, when you get all the gold medals you open up Ace Mode. The levels are much more difficult; you get a medal just for completing them. There were many times when I cursed Rogue Squadron 2 and it's developers, and then followed the desire to take a hammer to my Gamecube. Of course that all passed. Some of the levels were too difficult, regardless of the fact that I somehow managed to get the medals.

All in all, it is a good game. The graphics are almost life-like, the music and sound effects are straight from the movies, and the control is precise and well balanced. If you invite your friends over to show off what your Gamecube can do, this is the game to do it with. There are flaws, such as the hard difficulty in obtaining the medals, but these can eventually be overcome. The player's guide is what made it possible for me. Would I go through the process of getting all the medals again? Heck no.

Star Wars at it's best.

I just bought a black GC today and this was my first game. I truly must say that this game is great, the graphics and gameplay are outstanding. You control a vary of vehicles ranging from the X-Win to the Y-Wing. The only bad thing is that the game is too short. Levels are kind of difficult, leaving you with something to do. This game is very fun, very addicting. If you like Star Wars and you like flight sims, then get this game, you'll like it very much.

According to Gamepro:
Graphics: 5 out of 5
Sound: 5 out of 5
Controls: 5 out of 5
Fun Factor: 5 out of 5
And they aighn't lying!
First the graphics are breath-taking. The frame rate perfect. The clear voices from real Star Wars characters. Official Star Wars Music also. The controls are... well perfect! ;) The Fun Factor has me playing for several hours and counting. (Replay value unbeleivable!)
Must I say more?

StarWars Rogue Leader is a new generation in StarWars gaming. Starting, the graphics of the ships and of the planets are very true to the original trilogy. Second, the voices are also true to the movie. Other games use completely different sounding voices for characters we know and love. If you get or are thinking about getting a gamecube or a game for it seriously consider StarWars Rogue Leader.

I'm not a big fan of all the Star Wars universe, but I always enjoyed the 'flight simulator' games. Controls are very easy to learn, and there is a training stage to help you understand and control everything. The sound is great as with all Star Wars games...you get to fly through various worlds and battles from Star Wars...but there are some things that are sort of bad with this game. It may just be my deep personal opinion, but it seems like you're always out there alone. Constantly you hear your teamates crying for help while you're being tailed by tie fighters tearing you a new one. It can get annoying that you have to help everyone on the rebel team, but no one can ever get the stealth tie fighters off your [rear]. Oh well...it's still fun. Of course there are secrets...what game would be complete without secrets!? None I tell you. You have to complete the mission in a certain amount of time and within certain parameters of performance. Based on this, you win a medal. Medals equals points which you can later use to 'buy' bounus stages. And I will flat out tell you that the final stage is the most intense and killer battle I've ever played. You dont have to be a Star Wars fan to follow this game...if you just like to fly around and shoot enemies out of the sky then you too can play this game and enjoy it. One of the cooler things about this game is that you, as the title suggests, are the rogue leader and can control what you want the rest of the squadron fighters to do throughout the mission. Whether it be attacking the oncoming tie fighters or taking out large turret guns firing from bases below, you're in control; a definite plus. The number of ships and features you get to use through out the game make it even more exciting. This game is definitely worth checking out.

This is a great game, the graphics are extordinary. If you have access to cheat codes, that really helps. The levels are not too hard, and some are a little too easy, but once you get to the 4th or 5th, the levels get challenging. The endor battle is really cool, but I only beat it with a cheat for infinite lives. I used up 10 of them beating it. Get this game, it is one of the best ever.

All I can say is WOW!

Now, let's see, yet another staw wars game, right? If you thought that this game was just another Star Wars game, this game would proove you wrong. Firstly, the graphics are amazing!!!!! They're so rich and detailed. You really can't appreciate the graphis from some screenshot. You literally have to see it to believe it. One level that really stands out is the Hoth level, how the snow blows up behind your speeder. (by the way, there are LOTS of ships you control) Really, everything is soooooooooooooooooo detailed. Lucas Arts really must have really put a lot of effort into the graphics. Next, the missions. ALL of the missions are also very engaging. They never seem tedious or boring. None of the missions seemed to be after-thoghts. The control scheme is intuitive. It isn't twitchy or overly sensitive or overly insensitive, they're juuuuuuuust right. You can also communicate with your fellow squadmates VERY easily. Really, even if you don't like shooters, buy this game, it's a masterpiece.

This game was xellant! The Hoth level was amazin', though AT-AT's are my fav vehichle in STAR WARS, and it was sad to see dem' tumble. The last level was fricken hard though, I still can't get that stew-pid "It's gettin' hot in here" line of Lando's out of my head. go to *********** and get the cheat code for the 1969 Buick. Yu won't regret it! the cockpit is stellur, and it's exit of the hanger has me ripping my sides with laughter every time. Too bad it dosent have a craft descprition like in rebel strike. "This raging vehicle from a galaxy far,far away has the weaponry to beat the foodoo out of Imperial forces...."

Great!

Rogue Leader is very much like Rogue Squadron-so much so that the title "Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 1.5" might have been more appropriate. True, the graphics are most definitely better, (quite possibly the most impressive graphics yet seen on a console) but the game-play just feels archaic and stale. (How many times do I have to trip up AT-AT's with tow cables? Didn't I already do this in Shadows of the empire and Rogue 1?) There's just really nothing new here and the repetitive die-and-retry game-play really gets old.

You see, Rogue Leader is one of those games where in order to advance, you have to do everything exactly like the designers intended you to. Everything is scripted, and you have to go along with the script line for line and word for word. Any deviations will be met with an immediate "game over" screen. I would have liked a game with a branching mission structure-as seen in games like Wing Commander and Colony Wars. For instance if I fail to protect a frigate, then the game still keeps going, but the missions will progress down a different path than they would, had the frigate survived.

A branching path system would have given the game much more replay value as well. I'm sorry, but the medal system in these StarWars games just seems like a cheap gimmick to try to increase the longevity of an otherwise very short game. Who wants to replay the same level 27 times-trying to achieve perfection-just so you can get a medal to unlock a new ship or secret level? This just doesn't appeal to me; and if you don't replay the game to get these medals, then Rogue Leader is very VERY short. With just 11 missions, you'll probably complete the game in 5-10 hours.

I have a couple other minor complaints. One is the feature which automatically realigns your craft with whatever they decide should be up and down for that level. This is space; there is no up and down. It can be extremely aggravating when you're on the tail of a couple of ties, and then your X-Wing decides to realign itself causing you to lose sight of them. Which brings up my other complaint: why can't you lock onto anything? Why aren't there arrows which point to your target, as there are in nearly every other space-shooter. The only targeting information your given is a targeting computer (just like the ones in the movies) which comes down and overlays the screen. You have to hold the Y button in order for it to stay. This can be quite awkward at times-especially when you need to fire a torpedo. It really doesn't help you all that much anyway. It just makes all the enemy targets glow brightly so they're easier to spot.

Graphics and sound are pretty much the best features of Rogue Leader. The graphics are quite stunning, with bump-mapping, reflections, and just about every other bell and whistle you could want. And it's a StarWars game, so of course it has great sound.

I guess I just want Rogue Leader to be something it really isn't trying to be. StarWars fans who enjoyed Rogue 1 and the Starfighter games, and who want more of the same simple arcade experience, and those who care about nothing but graphics, will probably find a lot to like in Rogue Leader. Me, I want something new. I want something deeper. Purdy graphics slapped on the same tired, repetitive game just don't cut it for me.

Sound: 10/10 It's a StarWars game so of course the sound is great.

Graphics: 10/10 Quite possibly the most advanced graphics ever seen.

Controls: 8/10 The realign feature, and the lack of lock-on-targets is annoying, but other than that everything's fine.

Game-play: 4/10 Same old tired repetitive game-play as all the other recent StarWars space-shooters.

Final Score: 7/10. If you've enjoyed all the previous StarWars space-shooters, and want some more, then you'll probably enjoy Rogue Leader. I just wish the series would evolve.
