Excellent Update of Roguue Sqadron

This is an extremely addicting gameplay experience. You must completely master this game to unlock all of the special ships and levels, but mastering this will not be easy, young Jedi. On a scale from 1-10, 10 being the highest, I would have to give this game a 9 for difficulty. Don't get me wrong, you can still progress through the game fairly quickly, but getting all of the gold medals is going to be a definite challenge.

I guess the other big thing would be the graphics. You could say that the graphics are OK for the Gamecube, but that would be the understatement of the year. These graphics rival that of the film versions of the Star Wars universe, and in some cases surpass the film. This game is probably the best looking game on any system to date.

Since this is a Star Wars licensed game, nothing satisfies fans more than realistic gameplay experiences that allow them to become part of the galaxy far, far away. I have to give this game 5 out of 5 stars. The graphics engine alone makes this game a must buy for Cube owners, but throw in the top notch gameplay and Star Wars license and you have a winner. This is the launch game everyone should be picking up instead of Luigi's Mansion.

Can It Live Up to the Original?

Rogue Squadron was a great N64 game with stunning graphics and equally amazing gameplay. The sequel to Nintendo's best-seller, Rogue Leader, has a lot to live up to. But was the hype too much for this game?

The Pros:

1.) The graphics are breath-taking. Some points make me believe that they were taken right from the movies. Each ship is perfect, along with explosions and everything that goes with it.

2.) Amazing sound. Most of it is taken right from the movies themselves, which include the characters chatter and the sounds of the ships. But don't forget the awesome score!

3.) It's Star Wars. Everybody loves the chance to jump into the cockpit of an X-Wing and pilot it, and here's the most realistic chance you've had such far.

The Cons

1.) I heard that this game plays lightning fast, but I haven't seen it yet. No, there's not any slowdown, which is amazing due to the chaos around you, but my X-Wing seems to drag along when I have my X-foils in attack position. Maybe some of the ships are better, though. (The Naboo Starfighter was amazingly quick in the original, and you can fly that in this one, too, I hear.)

One detriment to this game makes me say this: "Buy this soon-to-be classic game, and buy it now!" A lot of people are complaining about the difficulty, but personally I would rather have a tough game than an easy one. Here's my final thought:

Graphics: 5/5. Simply the best I've ever seen. (Right there with Resident Evil for the GC.)

Gameplay: 5/5. If you play Rogue Squadron, you'll have no problem adjusting to this.
Sound: 5/5. Simply awesome.
Replayability: 4/5. A tough game that makes you want to play again and again until you beat the level. The extra features will also keep you coming back.
Overall: 4.5/5. Easily one of the best games on any next-gen console. Worth a play or two...or maybe even a thousand.

Thanks for reading. Hope this helped.

The must have game for the game cube. The graphics are spank and will blow you away! You fly X-wings, A-wings, B-wings, Snowspeeders, and BONUS Craft that you will obtain by completing certain goals. If you are a lover of all four Star Wars N64 games then you have to get this one. Buy a Gamecube just for this game! Their are 11 missions plus extra bonus missions. Long live the Alliance! That is until the Empire comes back and destroys eveyone. You can even strafe snowtroopers in the Hoth level! Well hi de ho.

Dazzling graphics but ridiculously hard gameplay spoils fun

I'm afraid I'm in the minority on this game. While the graphics and sound are dazzling, and story is true to the Star Wars universe, this game was a big disappointment to me. Simply put, I found it to be ridiculously hard. Which leads to replaying a mission level over and over. After awhile, that simply becomes frustrating and takes the fun completely out of it. Most of the missions are broken into sub-missions with cutscenes in between. Essentially you're given 3 chances to complete a mission and once you've lost 3 ships, it's back to the beginning to start the whole thing over. There are no save points at the end of the sub-missions. After playing the same sub-mission over and over, only to die later in the same level, the game quickly loses its appeal. Of course the other factor is time. Not only are you battling enemies, you're also battling the clock. So even when you don't die, you often fail because of time constraints.

I readily admit that my skill level is below that of many gamers, and as you can see, most people like this game. A "save at any point" feature would have gone a long way towards enhancing my game experience but unfortunately it wasn't designed that way. If you're considering purchasing this game, and if you're not a hardcore gamer, you might want to rent it and see if it's for you before plunking down ($$$).

If you like the first one!

Factor 5 has done it again! This game takes full advantage of the Gamecubes capabilities. I was blown away by the graphics. Never before have I seen such crisp and beautiful images on a game. I love the original Rogue Squadron but we all know that the dialog in some parts of it are pretty cheesy. Not the case in RS2. This Rogue Squadron has dialog in it that that is directly out of the movies. The music has been improved as well and sounds like the original soundtrack recording. A new feature added to the game is that you can have wing men who you can command, making you feel like you are more part of the enviroment. This in combination of improved graphics and sound quality make it no problem to get immersed into the Star Wars Universe. If you enjoyed the first one prepare to be blown away by Rogue Squadron 2.

Mind-blowing graphics and incredible gameplay

Its hard to describe Rogue Leader without using a long list of superlatives. The graphics in this game are so good that they're often distracting... seeing hundreds of asteroids in one level, dozens of tie fighters in another, its really amazing. The gameplay is excellent too, you really feel like you're flying missions straight out of the movies. Most of the missions follow scenes from the movies, though there are a few added to flesh out the game. Players have the oppurtunity to fly a variety of ships from the movies, and theres secret levels and hidden power-ups to search for too. Rogue Leader is not the longest game in the world, most gamers will finish the basic set of missions in 10-20 hours, though they can be replayed to improve your score and open bonus missions. I highly reccomend Rogue Leader to anyone.

This game is amazing!!!

Several years ago I went to a movie theater and they had a video game of the Star Wars Trilogy. It was extremely fun with amazing graphics and incredible detail. I was in awe of this game and told my friends that someday I was going to fork over $4500 and buy the arcade game. But now I don't have to. This Rogue Leader game for Gamecube is just as detailed and doesn't cost nearly as much. I was so excited when I first played this. The graphics are amazing, the controls are easy, and the realism is comparable to the movie. It is extremely challenging and I have my work cut out for me to beat the game. If you are a Star Wars fan and love ship to ship combat, this is the game for you. Don't hesitate, buy a gamecube and this game. You will be love it.

Rogue Leader is Incredible!

For over a year now, people have been awaiting the release of Nintendo's new system, the GameCube. It's here, and along with it is one of the finest games ever created. Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II is absolutely incredible. The graphics are superb (complete with high polygon counts) and it looks as if you're in the movie. Gameplay has been an issue to many people, but if you are a truly devoted video gamer you will never tire of it. First off, the levels are different and complex; second there is the metal system (gold, silver, etc.), which adds a high replay value. The best aspect of the game however is the sound. On one level (Battle of Endor) I had the music up high and when my friend walked in, he asked if I had the movie on somewhere. I told him it was a video game making the music and he was amazed. The sound is that good! So to sum it up: Rogue Leader is THE launch title to buy for GameCube. Go out and buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Rogue Leader is a truly great sequel to the original Rogue Squadron on N64. While the original was limited mostly to battles over the surfaces of planets, this new version features open battles in deep space. From mammoth Star Destroyers that you can actually attack, to AT-ATs you can bring down by wrapping your tow cable around their legs, to a level you can play as Darth Vader himself, this game totally immerses you in the feel of the movies.

The graphics, like most GameCube games, are stunning, but you really have to see this game in action to appreciate just how much it looks like the movies. Your X-wing's lasers reflect off the walls of the Death Star's trenches...TIE fighters spin out of control and crash after you hit them. And Lucasarts filled the whole game disc with voices straight from the movies and music straight from John Williams' orchestra.

If you are a Star Wars fan, you must own this game. It puts Starfighter and other recent entries in the franchise to shame.

Great Looking, But a Little Frustrating

I am a huge Star Wars devotee, and although I am very impressed with the graphics of this game, it's really the only flawless thing about it.

Now I mean it, the graphics are a perfect 10/10, it looks and even sounds like you are playing the movie, right down to the scratches on the surface of the massive Star Detroyer as it spits out dozens of Tie Fighters at you.

That being said, as far as replay value and interesting bonuses, there is nothing it has over the original version of the game. It is much harder, the secrets are FEWER and more painstaking to unlock, and the controls leave much to be desired. Often you can't tell if your ship is speeding up or slowing down when you press brake or speed boost- it usually just cruises along at the generic speed it's stuck on. And if a craft starts following you, the "camera angle" suddenly and awkwardly forces your ship far away and puts the pursuing vehicle in the foreground, making depth perception impossible. Missions with a great deal of Tie Fighters get old really fast when you can't tell if you're going to crash into something because your ship is just a tiny speck in the distance.

Also, although it is freeing and fun to fly missions in outer space more often instead of over land (like so many levels in Rogue Squadron 1) there is a lot of debris in outer space levels. So much, in fact, that often you have to use an infra-red-like targeting screen to find enemies to shoot at, making the outstanding graphics work done on the spacecraft and backgrounds pointlessly dark and distorted. There is an awesome-looking level in a nebula cloud, but you'll lose if you look at it for more than half a second.

It also would have been nice to have some kind of story, or at least a pilot with a "career" of sorts like in the original PC X-Wing game that came out in the mid-nineties. As it is, your only rewards for playing this game are getting to fly different vehicles in levels you already played for hours till they drove you crazy, a few unlockable levels that are pretty neat looking but are only entertaining until you beat them, and the old bronze/silver/gold medal thing from the first Rogue Squadron game that does nothing but rank you in an Arcade-like Top Score list.

This game is definately worth it for the graphics, don't get me wrong. But in the end it's just more of the same thing you had with the Nintendo 64 Rogue Squadron, except a lot harder and aside from looking at the pretty pictures a bit less replay value.
