Like the new Star Wars movie, this game insults the Star Wars franchise with a sloppily put together production and buggy gameplay. The graphics is second-rate compared to top PS2 or Xbox games, and the action gets tedious after the first level. Basically I see very few redeeming values in this game and it's an insult to both Star Wars and the GC.
Rogue Leader combines good graphics, perfect sound, and Fun!

Nintendo 64 fans should recognize the original title known as Rogue
Squadron, regarded as one of the best Star Wars games ever made. But
the new Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 you fly as Luke
Skywalker or Wedge Antilles in all of the most famous battles from the
original three movies.
The gameplay follows the adventures of Luke Skywalker and Wedge
Antilles and the most famous battles from the original three films. You don't
just fly in famous ones, you also fly in the ones in between, which often set up
the scene for the major battles. There are 11 campaign mission in all, which
actually can be beaten in a very short amound of time, other features in the
game extend it gratly. Factor 5's point for the game was to recreate the Star
Wars universe in the greatest detail possible, and they did it very well. You
can hardly tell the difference between the game and the movie. In the game
you complete the mission objectives your given and are awarded medals
depending on the requirements you for filled. In the game you shoot your
primary weapon by pressing A, tapping it in different variations produces
different results of shooting. The B button shoots it's secondary weapon, or
for some ships charges up the proton torpedoes. When your not shooting
anything your secondary weapon will automatically charge up. That is how
you shoot from all four laser guns on the X-Wing. The L button works as the
breaking system, and the R button works as an accelerator, just don't get
them mixed up! The harder you press the the shoulder buttons the more
action you'll get from them. Using X you can go down into the cockpit, you
can look around with the C Stick. By pressing the Y button you can access
the targeting monitor allowing you to lock onto your enemy for a better, more
confirmed hit. This is also very useful for stages in the dark of space, or in
the clouds. But, I found it very annoying and difficult to use at certain points.
For instance in mission #1, the Death Star Trench Run, in the trench you can
activate it to locate turrets ahead. Unfortunately there is no way of telling if
there is anything in between you and the turret, such as walls, which there are
many of them. Another new feature is you use the D Pad to tell your gun man
to aim at a certain thing you might have missed from the front, or just tell him
to protect the rear, or tell your squadron to attack certain things, or retreat.
Graphically, Rogue Leader 2 is one of the most impressive launch titles.
It has real time environment effects such as the rising of a sun, moving cloud
layers, and tons of other things highly noticeable and less noticeable. And
perhaps the most amazing fact, is that out of all of these amazing graphics
and extreme detail, Rogue Leader 2 managed to maintain a solid and fluid
60 frames per second.
The Sound of SWRL:RS2 is excellent, it shows off the sound capabilities
of the GameCube. In the game it uses voice clips from the movies, as well
as new voices from actors and the original Wedge Antilles. The game
transfers sound from a calm to a tense mood well. This game is a really
good example of the GameCube's sound capabilities. Rogue Leader 2
utilizes the Dolby Surround Sound Pro Logic system, for awesome and
intense sound.
So in the end Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II is one of the
best, if not the best games at launch. A definite Buy.

I was a huge fan of Rogue Squadron on the N64, and I immediately purchased Rogue Squadron II when it came out. The graphics in this game are beautiful, from lasers on the death star gliding past you, to the rebels on Hoth running away from the Empire's armies. Having a TIE Fighter explode right in front of you is a beautiful sight. And I also wished in the first game that you could fight in space, and that is well taken care of in this version. The only drawback I could find was the game's length. The first levels seem a bit easy (luckily later ones become more difficult), but I wish there were two or three more levels to add to the lineup. But the levels they have added are amazing. Star-Wars fans will cry in joy when they pull up from the Death Star's shield at the Battle of Endor to find a fleet of Star Destroyers waiting for them. It is like being in the movie, and the nostalgic feeling will make you blow up TIE Fighters with a vengeance. A must have for any type of gamer.

Rogue Leader is the MOST amazing game I have ever seen. Best of all it features all the most famous battles from the Star Wars Trilogy. Starfighter is good, but Rogue Leader is 1000 times better. I have never seen such fine details and how many ships can all be on one screen at once. I think this will not be a million seller but maybe a TRILLION seller.

No doubt this game is going to be insane. The graphics are unreal and the fun factor is going to be off the hook. I never liked starwars but this is going to be the first game I will purchase for the gamecube. Gamecube is definately not just for the younger croud as far as I'm concerned. I'm 19 and I am stoked for this system and Rogue Squadron, and of course R.E.! I can't wait...(and xbox is mad expensive plus the controller is weak) (...)

What is there to say? It is Factor 5 and Star Wars. A simple must buy for anyone getting Nintendo gamecube. It has incredible graphics that could get confused with the movies. If you like star wars, shooter-sims, and a good challenge, you'll want this game for sure.

Here's the deal: I was a huge fan of Rogue Squadron on the N64. The game pushed the limits of the system and was a great game all around. So I get my GameCube, pop in Rogue Leader and I see some really gorgeous graphics. But there are some serious problems which prevent this from being anything more than an idiotic shooter... and not a well done one at that. (Keep in mind that the dates of most of the positive reviews on this page pre-date the release of the actual game. You do the math).
Here's my experience with the game in a nutshell:
First off, I start my training... and there's no instructions. I fly over Jabba's palace, and it says "Congratulations, you've found Jabba's palace." Ohhh kaay... So I fly around some more and I pass through 1 of a zillion floating icons (which all look identical) and it says "Race to Biggs and Wedge to the station". Right on.. here we go... its a race. Except for someone forgot to tell me where we're going. Biggs and Wedge race past me and disappear. Bad start. Well I'll press on in their last seen direction. Soon I get an "Out of Bounds" message and I have to restart the race. Later I realize that the floating icons are "waypoints" for the race. Except for the floating icons for the race are identical to the floating icons to initiate other forms of training. Its all pretty confusing, and pretty poorly done. Later, I'm racing through a canyon and I make a wrong turn (There are no course indications) and again I get an "Out of bounds error".
In the 2nd mission, its very hard to see what's going on. There's so much debris floating around in space that I'm totally confused. There's no way to select new targets or to lock on to a target to track it. There's a targeting computer which looks like a big red piece of celophane that highlights the baddies, but that's no fun... I have to fly around using my targeting computer???
Then its on to Hoth. If you can figure out how to get that damn tow cable to work, congratulations. You're a smarter man than I am. And I keep colliding with things when to me it looks like I've got plenty of room to spare.
I don't know what to say about this game other than its a really beautiful visual experience that's just not a very good game.
Oh well.
