I'll try to explain anyway. I purchased this game after seeing that it got some great reviews on gaming sites. I was going to rent it first but didn't. I really tried to give this game a chance, I played it for several hours and no matter how many things I unlock, the fact that you can only move slightly left or slightly right on a set course is never changed. Besides the fact that interactive gameplay is almost nonexistent, the menus are clunky (you start over at a menu screen after every forced tutorial and every level without the option to continue directly on to the next) and the mini games that many claim to be fun are in fact horrible abominations. They have nothing to do with the world of sonic at all and though (for the only time in the game) you have a sort of 3d freedom to roam, the controls almost stand as an argument for why the option was not included in rest of the game.
I don't really care to critique it any further than this. I did not buy this game because it is visually stunning, I got it under the impression that it would be fun. I just wish to post this as a warning to anyone else. ...that and I wish I didn't buy it myself. 0 Stars
Seriously flawed controls

I purchsed this title after reading a couple positive reviews and now having actually played it, I really want my money back. At fault is the control system. Sonic runs at his own pre-programmed pace. He starts out slow and goes faster the longer you can keep from hitting something. You flip the Wiimote upside down to go backwards and tilt side to side to steer. Want to use the nunchuck? D-Pad? No go. The only thing you really control besides steering is jumping with the 2 button. It works in conjunction with a series of gestures to jump in various ways, most of which are so poorly executed that you could spend many frustrating hours trying to jump a single platform. I am not joking, and consider myself a fairly seasoned gamer. There are areas that make you wonder how this title got past play testing at all. Add in the cheesy voice acting and unhelpful and poorly timed training system (good luck getting past the third one in) and I cannot recommend this game to anyone at any age. I am glad that Sega made an original title for the Wii, but this game is seriously flawed. I think it is a really poor design decision to have most of the difficulty of your game stem from a poor control scheme.
I don't like to criticize too harshly without at least offering my take on what would help the situation for future titles. Obviously take Sonic back to 2-D, ala Paper Mario. If that is not happening, I would at the very least use the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo. Control Sonic via nunchuck to move forward, backward and steer. Use the "A" button on the Wiimote to jump and do NOT require a gesture like jolting the Wiimote to jump higher/farther, etc. Start there and you would be on your way to having some fun.

All the 3d Sonics have been hideous. This game is no exception to that trend. Sonic the Hedgehog should have died with the Sega hardware. Instead greedy money hungry individuals drag what was once a great franchise through the mud, in an attempt to turn prophet off horrendously made sequels and spin offs.
They would have been better off re-releasing the old Sonic games

I hadn't played a Sonic game, since Sega Genesis was in its prime - and I loved all of them. Those games were simple, but fun. Sonic & The Secret Rings for the Wii, however, is absolutely terrible. I forced myself to get through the "Lost Prologues" (basically tutorial mode) to actually be able to play a level, forced myself through a few levels, and had to shut it off.
The story was abyssmal (c'mon - some evil person is stealing the words off the pages of 1001 Arabian Nights - who, let alone Sonic, cares?) They would have been better off having no story. And the worst part is that I couldn't figure out how to skip the story scenes - I had to watch them! It was nice to hold the controller sideways, but I agree with another reviewer about the absurdity of having to shove the controller forward to kill enemies. It just doesn't mesh with the rest of the controls.
Thankfully, I rented the game and thus, didn't buy it. I was so disgusted I even returned it the next day. I didn't even try party mode, but I can't imagine it being worthwhile. Bottom line: do NOT buy this and don't even waste your time renting it.
Frustrating, Not much fun.

Fortunately I rented before buying this game due to the mixed reviews. I can now definitively say that the game is not worth even renting.
The poorly designed boards, loose feeling controls, and non linear movement through levels and worlds make this game incredibly frustrating to play. After a few hours of trying to hack my way through the third level, I gave up. I returned the rental 3 days prior to the due date.

I was beyond excited at the prospect of a new Sonic game for the Wii. However, I was shocked, annoyed, and depressed at how horrible this game was. The controls are terrible and the music is horrendous!
I think I played this game two or three times before I traded it in for something superior.

As an avid Wii user, let me say, this game isn't worth 50 bucks. SEGA failed as a game company for good reasons, as this game proves. They just don't know how to make a smooth, fun, nice game. Save your money for some great upcoming wii titles - super paper mario, metroid prime 3, super mario galaxy, smash bros, etc. There are going to be much better ways to spend 50 dollars in the next few months. Trust me.
Rather get a tattoo, or a crazy kitten.

One big disappointment! Sure it looks pretty, but so does a train wreck with a bit of color, shadows and if you look really fast and look away.
The controls are unresponsive, the actions too varied (like jumping and timing your jumps) and the velocity factor is inconsistent. I think the makers of this game either underestimated the level of hand-eye coordination out there or over-estimated it. After about 4 hours I gave up on moving backwards. I think it would have been more successful (for me at least) if you still had manual control like actually pressing left, right, forward or back, and not rely on tilting the remote controller. I don't quite see the Wii controller up for such a task. Not that there is anything wrong with the controller, but for instance, sitting up and laying down give two completely different gaming experience (from bad to worst).
Then there is the soundtrack. Why tunes with a "metal meets rock very badly done in a basement" feel? If you are struggling with a particular level (because of the inconsistent and varied actions), the same tunes just keeps repeating itself. Maybe a little collaboration with something (somebody) a bit more trendy and hip? I was hoping for something a bit more upbeat, sorta more in line with the "funkyness" that the game tries to portray. Sonic always had a stigma attached to it that will appeal to the trendy folk who listens to trippy house tunes...but this is no secret that the soundtrack sucks the biggest suck it can ever suck. And yes, I like alternative music, but its a big no-no here.
Bad story line, bad music, bad controls, bad dialogue.
The upside is that the disk makes one fierce coaster. Save your money people! Try it out when it becomes a "gamers choice game", which I doubt it will, but in order to get rid of all the surplus disks they will just stick "games choice" on the new inlay and con more suckers into buying this rather questionable piece of code.
