I am 47 years old. This is only the second review I've writen to Amazon. ... I bought 8 games the first day, including Ridge Racer 5, DOA2, Madden 2001, SSX, Kessen, and Unreal Tournament. They are all awsome games in their own right, and so is the PS2 system in most ways. I like many genre of intertainment. But I love this game. So does a 31 year old friend who played it alone for 5 hours at my house. I played it for over twice that time (making myself late for work one day). There are, as the gamers review points out, many variables and choices to the 4 game modes available, from going head-to-head, to a free roaming mode where you are free to just go off-roading in a 5 mile square of either forest, desert, or mountain snow (it's the same territory as the forest with entirely new techniques). I had fun knocking cars, trucks and RVs into the forest river while in the free roaming mode, while a friend of mine found out that he could go into an eternal free-fall by scaling up the snow-frozen waterfall and driving off the mountain edge of the map. All the vehicles (10 or so) have different handling algorithms and it's fun to watch your car's body parts fly off as you rip through border patrol cars or hit a deep gulley. Driving skills are a must to advance to the highest levels, as well as familiarity with the areas, and some expiriance with gravity effects in the game. The Border Patrol officials get tougher as you progess, attempting to bulldoze you over and trap you for an arrest ('Crazy Taxi' goals, only with cops to stop you!). The mode where you are a member of a team and competing with another team to steal the most contraband from a crashed plane, ect. is fun in a second way, because you're stealing stuff from the other guys as a team (kinda like soccer, only you really SOCK 'em). I also have a Dreamcast (another fun machine), but I've not found anywhere, a better game. Even the kids (7 to 12, boys AND GIRLS) found this game both fun and addictive. This game is truly a good buy, and for a first generation game, hits the limits of displaying the known processing power of the system. But again, the bottom line is it's fun.

You will enjoy this game.........trust me.

If you've ever longed for an interactive driving environment, from mowing down herds of buffalo to terrorizing unsuspecting families in their RV's--this game is for you. IT IS FUN. Me and my pal were killing ourselves laughing. In order to justify most of the potential violence in this game, the makers have adopted a sort of "Warner-Bros." attitude to the people and animals that you run down. After hitting them, they fly up and away in the most dramatic fashion, but they always get up for more (and become scared of you, trying to run away--in vain of course!). You can lay in wait at a traffic light, knock it over and watch the cars wipe out as it falls on them. You can stalk an RV, ram it hard, and after it tips, push it along the road and over the side of a bridge into the river. You can laugh with delight at ice-fishers desperately trying to run away from your carnage-craving car, to no avail as their feet slip and slide on the ice.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! In case your so inclined to actually play the missions in the game, it will provide hours and days of re-playable fun.

Highly recommended (especially for those of you who need stress-relief)

Oh yeah

A hybrid of the realism of Driver and the sick twisted objectives of GTA comes an unexpectedly cool Smuggler's Run. I'm the first to admit that...sure the drug smuggling and being chased by cops while trying to deliver the goods is great and exciting, but what I really enjoyed was the joyriding. Just driving responsibly and WHAM, run over a hiker. Or WHAM a train. Or flying down a snowy hill to ram a camper van into a frozen lake. Oh it's fun. A Tipper favorite for sure. All it needs to make it a perfect game is a little more GTA blood and guns sprinkled with some Twisted Metal/ Vigilante 8 massive weapons of destruction. I bought three other games at launch: Tekken,Orphen, and Ridge Racer but Smuggler's Run has taken up the bulk of my gameplay time. BUY IT.

This is a great game!

If you like being chased after by 6 cops who are faster than you, and are will do anything in their means possible to stop you, including ruin their cars, this is the game for you. In single player mode there are enough missions to keep you playing a whole long time. I myself am only on mission 12 and I have been playing for one day. it starts off easy but once you reach the double digit missions it gets a whole lot harder. As for multiplayer mode, it is really sweet. My favorite thing to do is to just free ride around with my friends and explore the levels( snow, desert, forest) which are very extensive. I'd hafta say climbing mountians in this game is really fun. Anyways, if you like car games, and if you like being chased by the cops and having a deadline on your time to deliver the goods, this is definetly a game you would like.

A highlight in the lackluster initial release games pack!

So far this is the only game that i bought when i purchased my PS2, and i'm glad i chose this one. Not only is the premise of it great, but the graphics are just mindblowing. No fogging of the backgrounds at all, anything you see you can drive to and on. Don't even get me started on how much fun it is to run over the hikers and the cops blocking my path.

I highly reccommend this game, hours and hours of fun. It also has a good amount of 2 player options and gameplay choices. Only problem i've found so far is the soundtrack is pretty weak.

Addictive FUN!

Smuggler's run is a fast, fun and addicting game. I highly recommend it. I have tekken tag, Madden, and Ridge racer.. this one is by far the best (madden comes in second). I love the fast 3-D "tag" action. I think the graphics are very good.. it's loads of fun smashing into stuff and running over people and animals... its all very cartoonish violence -- bug's bunny stuff. Get this game.. you'll have fun!

Think "Driver" meets "Vigilante 8"

Think "Driver" meets "Vigilante 8" and you've got a pretty good idea of how this game works. The excitememnt and high speed chases of (a wilderness) "Driver" and the crash em' up "what's physics got to do with it" of "V-8". This is a really impressive piece of work; here's why:

SIZE. . . The maps are MASSIVE. . . They seem to go on forever, and for the first half hour of play I thought that they wrapped around like in the old Atari days. . . Nope, they're just really flippin' huge! It could litterally take you 10 minutes to get from one side to the other. Want to climb a mountain? You can, and then you can look around at things that will actually take time to get to. . .

DETAIL. . . Everywhere you look, theres just lots of, well, STUFF. You hit a stream and it goes on and on and on. . . You hit the highway and it stretches out for miles. . . You hit a pedestrian and, well, I don't want to spoil everything.

PRICE. . . I've paid almost this much for PS1 games in the past that have still only been played for 15 minutes. This is one of those that, even if you don't play the mission mode, you will continue to pull out every few days and just allow yourself to be impressed by a video game.

Why 4 stars and not 5? It's not perfect. The physics is a little conservative for me. Mind you, I'm not complaining. I'd have given up looooong ago if I actually died every time I deserved to in this game. Also, I don't like the fact that just about all the cars have the same acceleration and $X$ ability, even if they wouldn't have the ability in reality. But this isn't reality, it's pure, unadulterated fantasy, and it's WELL worth the price!

A great game, just one complaint...

This game is fantastic in terms of playability and visuals. It's great to look at and the freedom you have to go 4x4 anywhere you want to on the map is a blast. The 2-player version is a riot, I haven't had that much fun or laughed that hard in a long time.

My only beef is with the 1-player game. The mission gets ridiculously hard after a little while. By the time you get to mission 11 and on, some of the scenarios are practically impossible to beat. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with having to play a level 3-5 times to get past it, so challenge is a good thing. But when you get to 15-20 attempts, it starts to get old. The police are faster than you, have stronger cars than you, and outnumber you 10-1. They gang up on you relentlessly. Even that could be overcome if you only had enough time. But the game makes it so you barely have enough time to speed from pickup to dropoff, and you must take an almost direct route. You don't have the freedom to try to evade the cops because you don't have time.

Overall, a great game and a recommended buy, but don't be surprised if you slam your controller down in frustration more than a few times.

The BOMB game!

Smuggler's Run is just like Crazy Taxi for Dreamcast except it's on PS2. Instead of delivering people you must deliver contraband. This game is very fun and addictive. Once you start you really can't stop. Plenty of cars to choose from. You unlock more as you go along. Nice interface and gameplay. The controls are great. It is also great in multiplayer mode. This is a must-buy for PS2 gamers!

This game has some BIG cons!

My 2nd review:

One of the big problems in this game is when you get to a hard mission, and you can't beat it you have to keep doing it over and over, which gets boring and frustrating really fast! Also the graphics in this game have a lot of jaggies, (The jagged lines the make up the car and land that should be smooth) all-though it is hardly noticable.

The two player mode also has its cons, one thing I didn't like was the pedestrians, deer, and all other cars that you could normaly just hit off the roads are all gone! To me this is one of the funniest things to do, so that was a big con to me.

The game does offer joyriding mode in which you just drive around and hit other cars, people, and deer basicly do whatever, but this does get old after about 30 minutes, and in two player joyriding mode there's nothing even to hit which gives you nothing to do, and that gets boring in about ten minutes.

So if you get frustrated easy and bord with doing the same thing over and over, well just try renting this game first, because it does have its fun points. So just try it before you buy it! If this helps you out please press the 'yes' button below so I know if I should keep writing reviews for other games!

Thanks for reading this! Anthony's review list: Smuggler's run, Kessen.
