Great Racing Game

This is a great racing game, expansive terrain to just drive around if you choose to do so. Or you can choose to do the missions, which get increasingly harder. It is best played single person as two player is a split screen. Kids love it. Altho rated for teens is a great game for the whole family, except for the language when playing the missions which is not geared for kids, and in my opinion is not necesary. This game is a little like driver, but not with city driving. My family enjoys playing tag in the two player drive about mode. All in all we give Smugglers run 4 stars.
Fun premise, but annoying

The basic idea is cool, the point being that you are freelancing for some criminal organization running contraband across the border while competing against cops and other organizations. It's finally something new to the basic speeding/car-racing genre I love so much.
The problem is that all the skills I've developed in other racing games are pointless here...you start with a selection of two cars, a big heavy SUV (that can take a little more damage) and a cage buggy dragster type thing. Well, in one stage you have to show off your driving skills (no pick-ups or drop-offs of contraband) by beating the other crime orgs, and I was unable to do it in the fast car...so I used the slow heavy one, and finally won. Time and again the heavier car is as fast if not faster.
The cops always catch up to you, too. I'm quite good at out-braking and hand-break cornering, yet the cops in their Chevy Tahoes are able to keep up with me, even while driving a 'dragster'.
The inability to outdrive the competition coupled with a a fairly boring set of tasks makes this a great game to rent for the weekend, but not to own.
Great Game

Overall a very enjoyable game. I find that the SUV is the best all around vehichle (to withstand the punishment that the police inflict). Some of the mission's are frustrating to complete. It is best to cruise around during the difficult ones to find the quickest path (flat - high speed cruising) to get to all the check points. It is sometimes quicker to do things out of order compared to what the arrow's suggest.
My younger son's love the free roam, and enjoy running over the ice fishermen the most.
Difficult on some missions, very enjoyable overall.
great attempt

wow. lots of fun. pros:
pretty original concept.
*great control over the cars.
*best party game, ever.
*enormous levels. they seem to go on forever.
*realistic everything. environment, car dynamics, etc...
*very high replay value.
*cool car sounds! haha
cons:
*lackluster graphics. not too great, but not bad at all. you
stop noticing they [are bad] an hour after you start it.
*no cops in the joy ride mode.
*repetitive missions... sorta just doing the same things over
long distances, but with different themes. don't get me wrong,
they're all fun.
all in all, it's a really fun game, and if you've got a ps2
it's definetly one for the library.
Is this game really up to PS2 ??

I got this game after reading the greats reviews regarding its fun. Well, at first I enjoyed it but then I got the feeling I was playing a game in the old PS1 console... The graphics and quality of the game are really poor in my opinion, compared to games like madden, for exemple and not up to the capacity of the PS2. Altough it gives much fun, I rather get other games that can explore the resources of the PS2, with better quality graphics...
A VERY fun and exciting game!

I had a blast playing this game. At the beginning, all I did was the Joyriding level to get to know the cars better and see how many animals, other cars, planes, people, rocks, etc I could hit. Then I went on a few missions, crashed into a few more things, including the border patrol on my tail and had more fun! This game is fun all around! I highly recommend it!

I was skeptical when I bought this game the day that PS2 was released, but trust me, this game is first-class. It is extremely addicting in the mission-mode, and two-player contests are an absolute blast. The difficulty curve is worthy of note; the game generally gets harder by the level, but there are a few levels (i.e. 31) that are absolutely intensely difficult. It's amazing how relentless the cops, CIA, Army, Border Patrol, etc... can be on certain levels. Many hours were spent playing this game, and I found the missions to be worth repeating several times. It is crucial to learn how to drive off-road, and how to use the contours of the land in your best interest. Trust me, you'll never stay on a concrete road very long... Very highly recommended !!!

This game is great anything you see you can go into. You can go in mines. You can hit people and you dont get any points off. It has awsome graphics. Once you start playing you won't be able to stop.

I thought the game was pretty good, but the narrator really bugged me. I know most of the games are geared towards the guys, but that does not mean the female narrator needs to refer to the player as "baby" all the time or say things like "faster, baby, faster, I bet you hear that all the time". You can turn the narrator off, but she still talks between missions.

There is no disputing that if you're into gameplay originality, incredible next generation graphics, and multiplayer fun - Smuggler's Run is the best of the PS2 launch lineup. Conceptually: smuggling contraband past border patrol versus police and rival smuggling gangs - can you beat that? Rockstar does it again. This is one of 3 games Im purchasing for PS2 launch - and the one Im absolutely most excited to play.
