Good, but not GREAT...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3

Basically, this game is the offspring of Driver and Crazy Taxi. You have to take valuable contraband across borders while avoiding the border patrol and other gangs. The graphix are awesome, but the gameplay could have been made a lot better and I feel they didn't use the full potential of the PS2. If the developers didn't rush to get this game out at the time of the PS2's launch, it could have been a lot better. If you liked Crazy taxi or Grand Theft Auto or anything like those, you are sure to like this game aswell, but if you aren't sure, get another game.

Great Game

I rented this game with the expectation that it would be terrible, having only 3 levels, i found it to be quite the contrary. While yes, there are only 3 levels, those 3 levels are, simply put, massive. It feels like they never end, and you're never in the same place twice. I liked watching pieces of the cars fall off as i jumped off cliffs, and the realistic flying action of people when you crash into them. Don't waste money renting it, go buy it.

Name: Smuggler's Run

Genre: Racing/Action Platform: PS2

About the Game:

You are a Smuggler trying to smuggle items todifferent locations. It is similar to Crazy Taxi but it has bettergraphics, it's more intense, and it is easier to learn.

This gamehas loads of boards to play with different types of missions. Some aresmuggling stuff and avoiding cops or smuggling stuff before othersmugglers get it! The game is very easy to learn, fun to play, andVERY ADDICTING!

Not as fun as it looks

The idea that this game is based on is easily one of the best that any gamer has ever seen. But, this game was VERY poorly executed and gets quite boring extremely fast. The graphics are quite smooth and fast but it gets boring going from point A to point B. There are some missions where you have to go back and forth picking up things, but that gets confusing and me and my best friend found ourselves trying to figure out what exactly we were doing. If you are thinking about buying this game-- Rent it first.

Another dissapointment

With the slew of unfinished looking games coming out for the PS2, it seems like the developers are having trouble tapping into the power of the system. This may be the best of the launch titles, however that isn't saying much. Basically you're the new guy in the world of smuggling, you pick up and drop off the various packages while speeding around beautiful 3d landscapes. One highlight is that there is unlimited land for you to drive on. No invisible walls here. This game is very fun for awhile, running over animals, hitch hikers and various other breakable objects. The cars are just polygons with no real paint scheme or detail. Once the initial rush wears off, you're simply left with a somewhat prettier but much less in depth Grand Theft Auto.

Does it For Me

I recently bought this game on kbtoys online, and I have been very impressed with it. Ok, the graphics aren't that good, but the gameplay certainly is. There are 3 modes of play, Smuggler's Mission, Turf Wars, and Free Ridin' (well, that's not the real name but that's basically what it's about). Smuggler's Mission is a one player mode with a number of missions that you have to complete. Turf Wars has 3 sub modes-Smuggler's and Crooks in which you have to pick up and deliver more contraband than all of your opponents in the time limit, Loot Grab in which your gang has to pick up and deliver 18 pieces of contraband before the opponent gang, and Checkpoint Race. All of these are 2 player. The missions are real fun, but it's the Turf Wars that give this game 5 stars.

Smugglers Run is great in 1 player mode but it really shines in the 2 player mode, especially the Crooks'n'Smugglers mode. Arf arf arf!

Nothing great about this one

After reading the descriptions, I was really hoping for something like a modern version of Autoduel.

What it turned out to be was a very bad implementation of the PS2 technology with a weak storyline and a bad concept. The graphics are barely of Playstation 1 quality. The storyline is far from engaging, and it really falls flat compared to some of the other titles out there. The concept of how goods are transferred is even rather ridiculous (ram a car and the contents of his trunk move into yours?!). The controls don't even respond cleanly.

Where's the beef?

This game sports great graphics. Beautiful worlds but no beef. This game will leave most gamers quite bored after about two hours of gameplay. All you do is drive from point A to point B. What this game really needed was weapons, enemies, and a variety in objectives. If you're thinking about this game, rent it or wait for a better game of its kind to come out.

A definite buy!

When i purchased this game i thought that it [wouldn't be great], i have to admit. But when i popped it in and played it i realized that rockstar has made 5 star game. This is how i rate this game.
Graphics 5/5
The graphics in this game are almost twice as good as in grand theft auto 3.
Gameplay 5/5
The single player action is pretty good(around 33 levels in all), but when your facing another person in the team smuggling or in the free for all, it is a blast.
Sound 5/5
Every vehicle seems to fit its sound of accelerating perfectly and when you hit stuff you can hear the clunk, squish, etc.
Overall Gameplay 5/5
Awesome, the game probably takes about 15-20 hours to beat and when you get done with that you can smuggle against a friend or do free for alls. I think if you dont want to pay 50 bucks for gta3 and want to spend a small amount on a good game from rockstar, add this one to your library.
