The best rain soaked streets

It's funny how some games get one thing right then blow the rest out the window. This game has mastered rain soaked streets. I have not seen better looking rain soaked streets in a game before. This is the state of the art in rain soaked streets.

The problem is if your looking for more than some nice looking rain soaked streets then your out of luck.

The car control is nice if not a little arcade like. This is by no means a simulation of any real world cars. In fact the game has no real world cars. The have some that LOOK like a Honda Civic and the like but these are cars only found in the world of video games.

The streets you race on are large and sometimes too large. When trying to chase down an opponent it can get boring. The races are boring at times too. Not a test of race skills per say, more like how well you remember the shortcuts.

The game play is ok. The graphics are ok. The sound and music are ok. In short this is an OK game. Nothing to call your friends up and brag about. More something to be mentioned off hand like "oh yea. I got that game at the launch. It's ok. Wanna play SSX?"

I rented this game after reading some good reviews here, but personally I thought Midnight Club was pretty lame. The lighting effects and cars are pretty cool looking, but otherwise the graphics were just average. The audio is really bad. The characters that you race against have about three different taunts that they say and it gets annoying in a hurry. On the positive side, the controls are decent and the cars handle well. It's a nice concept for a game, but I just didn't think Midnight Club Racing was that much fun. I'm certainly glad I rented it first instead of wasting fifty bucks.

Funnest PS2 game I've played yet.

Situation: You've just purchased an Amazon bundle pack with Madden, RR5 and SSX. You invite some friends over the day you get it in and try out the new games. Everyone's excited and ready to have some fun. You pop in the games... Madden: You don't like football, so this game is a waste of time. RRV: Looks nice, especially the skies in the second level, but after playing for a half hour you've only seen two monotonus tracks which are, um.. variations of the same track. SSX: A little more fun than the others, but it takes everyone a while to get the hang of it, and no one does very well.

(some aspects of the above story were modified for dramatic effect)

Too bad I didn't have this game for my 'Check out the Playstation 2' get together. This game, while not quite as pretty looking as RRV, is a lot of fun - and that is what we play games for? I've owned it for about 3 hours already and I've actually gotten somewhere and enjoyed it! I've played RRV for about 3 days, forcing myself to get though it - and while I feel accomplished when I do finish a grueling Grand Prix, I can't say it was 100% fun.

Ireally appreciate the fact that the races (so far) are generally short - so when you need to race against someone 10 times before you race them it hasn't taken a week - and you CAN replay them as many times as you want without having to replay prior levels. (My biggest problem with RRV is that I can usually breeze through the first 3 races of a GP, but the 4th is always trouble - and you only get 4 tries before you have to go through the first 3 levels again. It just takes so LONG!)

I would definately buy this game if you enjoy arcade-style task-based racing games. Even my wife likes it! The fact that we live in New York City certainly doesn't hurt! Too bad you can't really drive down 105th st!

This game makes me happy that I wasted so much time getting one of these systems!

One of the Two Best PS2 Launch Titles

Of the PS2 launch titles, only Midnight Club and SSX continue to hold my interest six months later. While Career Mode is both challenging and rather frustrating, the ability to play Capture the Flag (in Arcade Mode) in very realistic versions of New York City and London is very intriguing, and mentally demanding. The key to winning CTF is knowing each city better than your own hometown (unless you actually live in NYC or London), and knowing your four-wheeled weapon better than the back of your hand. The many shortcuts and impressive jumps in both cities also add plenty of fun and encourage countless hours of exploration.

And the ability to hit the pedestrians is also rather unique!!!

Great racing game with story line

The control isn't as hard as GT3, however it still has some realistic degree. Chasing with hookman to make connection for racing is a nice idea; it's very chanllenging when the hookman has a fast car. Turning 180 degrees takes some time to master, but once you know how to do it, it will make chasing very easy and fun! Finding the shortcut to win the game is fun, although you can always follow the fastest car and beat him with your refined skills. Cruise mode is cool, never seen that in any video games. If you are from NYC (or London), you can just take a ride to see where you live or used to hang out.

2-player mode is kinda slow, I can feel it slows down the PS2 computation speed.

Racing wheel does not do a good job here. I bought a racing wheel but finally returned it because it's hard to control.

It's a nice game to rent or even keep.

Great racing and limitless fun!

Midnight Club Street Racing is loaded with speed, versatility, graphics, and street cars. I didnt know anything about this game until one of my friends told me about it. He said he had rented it and it was really fun. I decided to pick it up and give it a try.

The second I put it into my PS2, I was hooked. I was mesmorized by the size, complicity, and graphics of the city. The details were as specific as people diving out of the way as your speedy car came roaring at them, to the changing day-light as your racing day wore on.

The lighting is another amazing affect. When you start, you can choose to start at dawn, dusk, midnight, or evening. As you roam around the city the time of day changes. If you satrt at midnight, after a while of driving, it will be dawn.

This game also has limitless fun with its versatility factor. It has the sense of roaming that you get in, my all-time favorite, GTA3. If you are in a street race, you can just drive around the enormous city doing what ever you wish.

One thing that surprised me in this game was the compelling storyline. You are a begining street racer, looking for a race. Once you follow a car to a race, you compete to get your name out on the streets. Eventually, you race big names for their cars. As your name gets more and more well known, you race more challenging people. The thing I liked was the top names were quite hard to beat, but hey, who doesn't like a little competition?

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because there are only two cities - New York and London. Although the two city are gigantic, more cities would have gotten this game a perfect score. Otherwise, this is a great game, which I recomend.

ONE of the first one of the best!

Midnight Club Street Racing is a great game. There are two different modes in this game: arcade mode and career mode. In arcade mode, you just select one of the cars you've unlocked so far and go for a joyride without police in either London or Manhattan, do some street races, or play capture the flag against either a computer player or a friend with a split screen. You can also take a joyride with a friend in Manhattan or London. There are a total of 40(!) cars you can drive, starting out with just a lowly taxi cab in career mode to drive and the taxi, a lowrider, a pickup truck, and a hatchback to drive in arcade mode. You can unlock cars for use in carrer mode by winning one-on-one races with other members of the Midnight Club.
It's nice to have the freedom of 40 different cars (and trucks) to drive, but you are limited to only two cities. It's also nice to be able to change the weather to clear, cloudy, foggy, or raining in arcade mode, but there is no way to change the time to day. One other comfort for control freaks like me is the ability to change traffic and pedestrian levels to ten different levels.
Some disadvantages of this game include medicore graphics and some touchy pedestrians (but you can run them down if they get on your nerves!). One example of this is you can be speeding down the middle of the road when a pedestrian shouts out: "Get off the sidewalk, bud!!". But despite these setbacks, this is a very fun game overall.

Highs:
~40 different cars and trucks
~change traffic levels, pedestrian levels, weather, and time of night
~run down pedestrians!
~really fun two player mode
~really fun one player mode, too!

Lows:
~medicore graphics
~touchy pedestrians
~only two cities to drive in
~can't drive during the day
