This game is great at first. You're a hero in a Chinese army, like a Colonel, and you fight with the men in your command to defeat the opposing general. Strategy is realistic; if you deviate from your mission and get bogged down, the enemy may overrun your general and you'll lose. I found that the game was difficult at first, but once I got a little stronger I started using "navy SEAL" tactics and just ran straight to the opposing commanders and generals, and killed them. I beat the 3rd and 4th levels in 5 minutes using this tactic. It gets easier as you go, because you get a special guard of men that eventually become better than you! I had to run away from my men to get a chance to fight because they killed everyone!
It took me all of 3 hours to beat the game, and that was after figuring it out for an hour or so. It left me disappointed and wanting more. Worth a 5 for the 3 hours you'll play it. Go out and rent it, and you'll have your fill.

Good game BUT....

It is way too short for a KOEI game. Even if there are 8 levels and not just 5 (which takes some work to unlock the extra characters and levels) we are still talking about only 8 levels. That is way too short.

I have loved all kinds of KOEI games (from Ghengis Khan for the NES to Romance for the Station) all give hundreds if not thousands of hours of strategy game play. However, Dynasty gives you at best (and this is stretching it) 50-70 hours. That is if you use all the characters and really work your way through the entire game each time. However, the game is repetitive in nature, so doing basically the same thing with different officers each time gets tiresome.

Moreover, there really isn't a whole lot of strategy involved. You play as an officer. Basically, you go around and try to hack the opposing officers and protect your general. There is a bit of strategy, but it is all dependant on how well you are with the action fighting game play. Your character and his/her bodyguards get better as the missions go on, but any real war strategy (moving troops, angles of attack, etc.) are nonexistent.

If you buy this game you will probably say what I did: "that was cool, but is this it?"

Graphics are great and it is a great idea. However, there isn't and real strategy like I enjoyed in past KOEI games. There isn't anything that really requires you to think and try to figure out. So as a strategy game it just fails. As an action game, it succeeds, but like most action games its life span is relatively short.

Awesome demo, OK game

"Dynasty Warriors 2" is an impressive example of what the PlayStation 2 can do. The battles with dozens of realistically animated 3-D soldiers, with allies and enemies acting independently, probably couldn't be done on previous systems, and it surely wouldn't look this good.

But there's no getting around the fact that there's a certain monotony to the proceedings. DW2 is essentially a modern version of old beat-em-up's like "Double Dragon" or any number of its clones cranked out by Capcom, Data East, etc. in the late 80's -- walk down the street, dispatch dozens of anonymous thugs, pick up some power-ups, and fight the boss. In DW2, you get to do the same thing in 3D, and while you're responsible for knowing how the battle is progressing on the world map, you can get by just by moving along with your allied troops, slaughtering enemy ranks and taking out their bosses.

Since this is a beat-em-up and not a fighter, the move list is far simpler than what you'd find in a "DOA2" or a "Soul Calibur": one button for fast attacks, one for a slow sweeper, and an occasionally-available special. Not that I want a two-page move list, but when you're personally slaughtering 300 or more enemy troops, you can't help but feel like you're doing the same thing over and over again.

Production values are very nice: it FEELS like being in a war in 2nd Century China. Costumes, horses, encampments, etc. are all well done.

Ultimately, it's a fun diversion for a while, ... wanton slaughter, but you can't help but think that someone's going to take the ideas of how this game works further and make something truly breathtaking -- where I'm doing more in this immense 3D world other than going square-square-square-triangle to an endless horde of faceless troops.

good game cool moves but the only bad thing is you have to have a memory card tp play this game because it takes way to long to beat without a memory card

Dynasty Warrior 2 was one the greatest hit on PS2 in Japan. The producer of the game was KOEI, which is famous by making strategy games and game series of the Three Kingdoms. Dynasty Warrior 2 is more than just an action game, it also combined a great amoujnt of strategy. As a warrior from one of the Three Kindoms, you are about to defeat the other Kindoms and achieve the final victory! You have 9 characters to start with PLUS 19 more hidden characters waiting for you to unlock them. You will love it no matter what type of game player you are.

The first game I played (but not the first I actually owned) whenever I play this I feel like I'm a newbie to the games once more. Liu Bei is my favourite character (but he is REALLY hard to earn as some characters are).

It was a bit difficult the first few times I hired it and I could never get past the Yellow Turban Rebellion (the first level) but once you get used to the game it becomes easier. I could never get tired of this, I could just play and play and play and play.... you get the picture?

The graphics... the people are okay, they don't speak audibly in this game, words just appear on the screen when they do. When you ride horses if your character has a cape it often cuts the rumps of the horses. The horses in this game are animated better than in any of the other games! The hocks look right, they move at an appropriate speed fo that of a galloping horse. Their hoofbeats even sound more realistic.

If you've played any of the other games, then play this one. I recommend it greatly, but only if you are into the good old hack and slash video games.

This game is really fun, but it seems like the whole war is up to you, the other groups aren't as effective as they could be with a little more AI work. And it gets really repetative just hacking your way through hundreds of little dudes that all look the same... If your troops stayed with you instead of lagging behind it would cut down on getting mobbed by the enemy, the only big difficulty in this game.

Best ever

I loved this game. I thought it was kinda historically accurate, but the fun factor is great too. I gave this game five stars. because it was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
much fun. Personnaly I love Kung Fu movies and martial arts books and video games, I also am very intereste4d in Asian history, so if you have the same attitude buy this game, for the love of god, buy this game.
