Dead or alive 2 was a port from the dreamcast version its graphics were not enhanced. It looks exactly like the dreamcast version and plays like the dreamcast version. The game was written for the dreamcast hardware its a poor port wth no extra characters and no improvement to the terrible control scheme and bad combo system. If you really want this game get the dreamcast version instead. Tekken tag tournament is better anyway.
Very Disappointed

Am I the only gamer who lost interest in these tekken types of games? Graphics of DOA2 is anime-like and has many good looking female fighters. Too bad they don't make up for the terrible game-play though. Juggle and special moves are phony and are getting old. If you like games like virtua fighter4, you might like this game. I'm not sure if tekken tag fans would like this game, but I sure don't. In my opinion, Tekken requires more strategy in comparison to DOA2. DOA2 yields beginners about the same chance of winning if they smash buttons. There is no need for skills in this game. Learning difficult moves doesn't reward you. What's so good about a fighting game if you can't get good at it? Also, if you're a fan of mixed-martial-arts, know how MMA fights go, and prefer a simulation of MMA fights, stay away from this game. Wait until Pride FC is available.
I own both Tekken TT and DOA2. Tekken TT is better by far.

I bought DOA2 based on the good reviews on this board. What a waste of .... Just so you know my perspective, I'm not a hard core gamer, but I'm not a casual gamer either. I'm middle of the road. I can't do most of the hard combination moves of Tekken but I enjoy Tekken much better. Here's why. Tekken graphics are much better than DOA2. Tekken characters offer much more variety than DOA2. Tekken fighting offers much more depth than DOA2. Tekken audio is much better than DOA2. The only thing DOA2 offers over Tekken is the multi-level stages. That's kinda cool. Button mashing you say? While there are a couple of characters in Tekken who are effectively used with button mashing, the majority will not respond to such amateur tactics. However, DOA2 encourages button mashing because everyone's moves are so simple and in fact require pushing buttons fast repetitiously. The bottom line is I own both games. I only play Tekken Tag. I will be selling DOA2 soon. If you can't take my word for it, I strongly recommend you rent it or borrow it first before you buy. By the way, all this talk about DOA2's characters' physical appearance/proportions and their costumes are not up to hype and Tekken's characters are hotter than DOA2's characters.
Too Narrow-Minded

This game is graphically beautiful. Too bad graphics only go so far. The gameplay is lacking, and its not much fun when someone can do nothing but counter you over and over to win a match. The gameplay is simple, a turnoff to professional players. Button-mashing is very common, and it doesn't take much skill to win a game. This game is obviously geared toward only males, as the female characters wear relatively nothing and have up to 8 skimpy costumes to choose from. All the hidden gallery has to offer is pictures of these forementioned girls, usually as skimpy as ever. While this is fine to me (being a guy), it is a major turnoff to female players. Seeing how there are already a lack of them, this game doesn't really give them reason to want to play, either. This game hardly has reason to give anyone but newbies to play, seeing how the story bites and the gameplay is anywhere but skill-related. While the FAQs and the game's setting is well-presented and just plain cool, it is not enough to save this game. Some will like, some will loathe. I view it as "ok" but very limited. Check out Tekken Tag Tournament, which is superior to this game in more ways than one. Only get this game if you happen to like the setting, unique playing style, or just want another fighting game to add to your PS2 library. But I still suggest trying out Tekken Tag first.
Umm.....NOT so great

This game, in one word, is "bad." It just doesn't have enough going for it to get over 2 stars. It is a button smasher, and should NOT appeal to any real gamers who have any respect for [their] skills. If you have no skills and can't DO anything besides button mashing, I recommend this game to you, you loser with no reaction time and no idea how to play a game. But here: I'll explain the generous 2 stars I've given this game - it's beautful. The graphics are beautiful, and so are some of the characters *g*, but that doesn't (and never should!) make up for the awful gameplay. Firstoff, there's the awful slow control characteristic of fighting games. Then there's the button mashing. Being a gamer who relies on speed, I brought me fast moves and strategy to bear on my younger sister - and I was demolished for it!! She literally set her controller on the ground and began to smack it, and she beat my arse! My recommendation is against this game, no matter how sexy the girls and how good the graphics!
The Graphics were terrible

This game did have like 10 more stages then the dreamcast version which i like. but i think the graphics for this were terrible. if your going to buy this game buy the dreamcast version. the gameplay is alot more fun and the graphics are alot better. Plus if you havent gotten playstation 2 yet. dont worry about it, the system hasnt come out with good games yet.
This game has jagged edges.

This games is just like the Japanese game the graphics are horrible. I got my Playstation 2 two days ago,and I put in DOA 2:Hardcore first I was so disappointed I was about to take my Playstation 2 back, but luckly I played SSX and I didn't even think about taking it back then. The Dreamcast game is better. I took DOA 2:Hardcore back and got Tekken Tag Tournament. The graphics were a little better.
Great Graphics, Good Moves, Dumb Story line and Voice Acting

This game definatly shows off the PS2's graphic capabilities. It looks great! The moves are pretty awesome too. Hard to access alot of them though (for me at least, not a avid fighter gamer). But the storyline is abysmal. Maybe 4-6 chars have a storyline that makes sense and the rest are just movie clips to show off the PS2. The Voice acting for this game is about as bad as the storyline. Buy the game for the fighting not the storyline and mute the voice acting and turn on the subtitles.
Not as good as the Dreamcast version

Lets face it people, what's more important? Slightly better graphics with a few more color schemes for the same costumes and two or three new arenas, or more responsive controls?
That's right, more responsive controls.
All the eye-candy in the world won't amount to squat if the game is more sluggish!
Being a vet of DOA2 for Dreamcast, I was excited about the PS2 version, so I bought it. For some reason, I can't execute counters as intuitively as I could on the DC version. This is a very serious problem, because counters are vital in DOA2.
I can't stress the importance of this lack of responsiveness in the game except to advise you to buy the Dreamcast version, if possible, or Tekken Tag for PS2. This will satisfy your fighting needs as well as DOA2.
I feel the PS2 version isn't as responsive because the game was designed on Dreamcast hardware, and ported over to the PS2.
What a shame...
One of the better launch PSX2 titles

DOA2:Hardcore is overall a very nicely done game. The PS2 version shines in its background graphics and the beauty of the characters, personally I prefer the lighting of this version over the DC version, but that's a more subjective view. Gameplay is simply just plain fun. The good balance of characters offers the perfect solution to the fighting style of your choice. Multiplayer gaming is great, as tag (2vs2)battle, team (3-5 vs 3-5), and vs. modes should keep at most 4 people occupied for a while.
What this game seems to fail gracefully is its single player story mode. Although we all know that there will never be a good story plot in arcade fighting games, Namco could at least put some more rewards and depth into single player challenges. To me, simply getting cosmetic changes to my characters and etc. just doesn't motivate me that much to spend my time into it. This game in its single player story mode could never be on par with DC's Soul Calibur, which offers a much richer and in depth single player gaming experience. The other single player modes of this game is interesting, but as I mentioned, the depth is just not there (sorry DOA fans).
The control of this game is very good (thanks to the PSX controller), but not great. The full analog support on the Dual Shock 2 has its ups in the ease of use with the joypad section and higher sensitivity in the buttons(which makes making combos A LOT easier), but its downs is evident in the direction pads (u will rarely get a chance to use them, except for jump, crouch, and defend) where the users have to get used to switching back and forth. Learning curve of this game's controls should be around 60~90 minutes for casual gamers and shorter for hardcore experts.
DOA2:Hardcore is a better presented game over its Japanese counterpart, as improvements in gaming is evident. This game is FUN and great to play with friends, but be forewarned, the single player experience MIGHT let you down if u have played DC's Soul Calibur. But, it should be YOU who should decide the fun value of the single player modes. This game is definitely worth your $$, and is definitely the better PS2 launch title on the market.
