Perfect port of the DC version, but a little late

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4

Dead or Alive 2 first turned heads as an arcade title that was later ported to the Dreamcast earlier this year. Now, the definitive version of the game, DOA 2 Hardcore has emerged to go up against the likes of Tekken Tag Tournament and Street Fighter EX3 as the PS2 launches. It's an easy call to say DOA 2 is the most visually captivating of them all. Game play wise, the fighting engine is solid, although the attack reversals work a bit too well and the disproportionate damage they cause keeps the combat system from truly achieving its potential. The game's audio is simply awesome with great stage music and well-done Japanese voices. The awkward English voices make the already nonsensical story even more so. If it's any consolation, fighting game plots rarely make much sense anyway. While DOA 2 Hardcore doesn't sport as many hidden characters as its competition, it does feature the beloved hidden-costume unlocking feature that is a trademark of the series. This is one of those debates that will certainly rage on and even in the GamePro offices not all are in total agreement. Suffice it to say that the fighting game the majority of the Gamepro.com staff will buy is DOA 2 Hardcore. For fighting enthusiasts, DOA2 Hardcore is the first must have game for the PlayStation 2. End of story.

If you have played the DC version then maybe you should stay away from this version but if not then you will be amazed! The Graphics are really really inpressive with the cool and slick backgrounds, very tight and easy controls,a very up beat sound track and most important if you have a PS2 Multi-Tap get ready for some of the most awesome tag team battles! Over all this game is worth it and if you have not played alot of the DC version then it's worth it even more.

DOA2 Rocks!

DOA2 is the best game in the fighting genre for PS2. With unbelievable graphics, awesome moves and fighting styles, and varied characters, this game surpasses the rest. You can choose from over 6 modes, including sparring(practice)and versus modes. The graphics are awesome, period. There's nothing else to say. You can choose from 12 great fighters, 5 bodacious girls and 7 ... kicking boys, which range from a karate trainer with a lost memory to a women's pro-wrestling superstar, excluding two characters that you have to unlock. Altough some people refer to this game as a "button-masher", it really isn't. "Button mashing" will not accomplish Hayabusa's "Izuna," or Jann-Lee's "Fall of the Dragon." I would certainly rather "button mash" than spend a month in training to learn a few moves, as in Virtua Fighter 4. Some heavy attacks may be distributed through this term, but only sorry and players new to fighting game scene would resort to this. Another cool feature is your age. The higher your age, (which can be altered by choosing Others from the Options menu) determines how bouncy the girls are. The ages go from 13-99, so have fun, set it to the limit and enjoy. The CG Gallery is a feature where you can watch the well-endowed women pose in bathing suits and such. This can be accessed by successfully completing a mode with 5 characters.(Test this suggestion.) The setbacks are that Story mode is very short and you only fight 7 characters, and the stories have no point. But why get bothered over this. The second one is that the computers win bouts by mostly blocking followed by a reversal of your attack, which takes an extremely large amount of power. This flaw kept the game from getting a perfect score. Besides that, this game is great and should appeal to all mega fighting gamers around.

Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore is definitely one of the better PS2 launch games. If you read the Gamespot review, this version has significantly improved graphics over the Dreamcast version and the Japanese PS2 version. The game has new modes that have never been seen in the DC version either. In my opinion, this game is graphically more amazing compared to Tekken Tag Tournament. But DOA 2: Hardcore also has one unique feature that has attracted many teenage gamers ahem...Anyway, like Tekken Tag Tournament, this game features a tag mode, so you can duke it out 2 on 2. There is a larger fighting environment than Tekken Tag Tournament that you can react with, like sending your opponent through a window. What's also cool is that the characters speak in Japanese and you can choose what language subtitles you want. Overall, this whopping DVD-ROM game is worth getting for fighting fans that are too sick and tired of Tekken or don't own a Dreamcast to try an awesome game in a new series of figthing - Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore.

most people will just buy tekken for a "better cover name", but this is a much better game. if you gat it on dreamcast and think nothing new will be there you are sourly mistaken. this game is the best example of pure fighting with enough extras to choke a horse

Too Narrow-Minded

This game is graphically beautiful. Too bad graphics only go so far. The gameplay is lacking, and its not much fun when someone can do nothing but counter you over and over to win a match. The gameplay is simple, a turnoff to professional players. Button-mashing is very common, and it doesn't take much skill to win a game. This game is obviously geared toward only males, as the female characters wear relatively nothing and have up to 8 skimpy costumes to choose from. All the hidden gallery has to offer is pictures of these forementioned girls, usually as skimpy as ever. While this is fine to me (being a guy), it is a major turnoff to female players. Seeing how there are already a lack of them, this game doesn't really give them reason to want to play, either. This game hardly has reason to give anyone but newbies to play, seeing how the story bites and the gameplay is anywhere but skill-related. While the FAQs and the game's setting is well-presented and just plain cool, it is not enough to save this game. Some will like, some will loathe. I view it as "ok" but very limited. Check out Tekken Tag Tournament, which is superior to this game in more ways than one. Only get this game if you happen to like the setting, unique playing style, or just want another fighting game to add to your PS2 library. But I still suggest trying out Tekken Tag first.

This sequel is a great continuation of the DOA franchise. I was really impressed with some of the new spaces, and character movement. I loved the first game, and think that this one is a must own. They are definatly taking advantage of what the PS2 is capable of.

This game is a great fighter. Look at interactive backgrounds, a fair number of different fighting styles, nice # of characters, easy to get the grasp of but hard to get good at. Beginers will like the ease at first and appreciate the difficulty of intentionally doing moves as they play on. all in all one of the better fighters on the system... just a shame that they moved to X box with pt three and DOA volley ball

DOA2:Hardcore definitely worth your hardearned dough......

I've always like the DOA series. Not because of the girls in the game and their assets that defy gravity, but because it has always been one good technical fighter. Most people claim that it's just a Virtua Fighter .... I'll admit, there are similarities there but they didn't rip them off. DOA takes the bar on fighting games and raises it. DOA2:Hardcore carries on that tradition. To be honest, the Dreamcast version of DOA2 has more crisp visuals but Hardcore has more for the money.
As for the game itself, It's one fighter that I highly recommend all PS2 owners to own. It's definitely worth your hard-earned dough.
If I had any gripes, it'd be with company, Tecmo, itself. Why do you keep changing consoles for your games?? How about bringing out DOA3 for the PS2. I can't keep forking out [$] each time you put out a game just to keep up with the series. Please!!, do us fans a favor and multiplatform so everybody can get the best your games have to offer.

Jiggle Factor...

Yes, as a female gamer... it's kinda this Jiggle Factor that doesn't appeal to me about this game. Other than that it's not bad for a 3D fighter. Has a good control system and some cool characters, (Ayame is great) but a little gratuitous.
