Flashes of Brilliance

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 1

This game shows fleeting glimpses of greatness, but more often then not, is clumsy. Defensive controls are clunky and awkward, and the flashy plays that the computer puts on are nearly impossible for a human player to accomplish, because of way-too-small camera angles in the field, SLOW fielders and clumsy controls. These faults make games uncompetitive very early and the games become dull as each inning is more redundant than the last. The Player Creation mode leaves much to be desired. You can only fiddle with the basic attributes and not alter their facial features. If you create two players of the same race, they'll look nearly identical. However, the flashes of brilliance are quite bright. The player's faces are well rendered and the defensive animations are outstanding (when you can actually pull off a play). The Home Run Derby is fun, but when you hit so many home runs, you will soon get tired of hearing the same home run call again and again. The same thing happens if you play two games in a row with the same team. Bob Brenly's player-specific comments are insightful, but the the same one is played each time the player comes to the plate for the first time. I agree with other reviewers that the batting practice is useless. The problem isn't making contact; it's just a matter of hitting it where the fielders can't get it, which means that most hits end up being bloops or blasts. Also, I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but I ended a rally once by lining a pitch off the dugout. This should've been a foul ball, but the pitcher (controlled by the computer) ran over to foul territory, picked up the ball and threw me out at first. This game is a fun game for the first few innings (that is, if the teams are evenly matched), but one can quickly lose interest and not make it all nine innings without dozing off.

Best Baseball Game this year but.......

..... it could have been better. As for all the people who complained about the flaws here i disagree.
The fielding aint THAT hard. You'll get the hang of it when you start playing the game a lot. Also i heard some1 complain that u cant choose jerseys during a season. Well you're right, but then again thats what exhebition is for isnt it?
I mean this game has real cool but it has some flaws. I think the home run derby is horrible. I used to love it at Triple Play 2001 but now i hardly ever play it. I mean u can choose any player but for a team and not for themselves like the real derby. Also the part where u cant choose the amount of innings really ticks me off. Some ppl complained that u cant trade or sign between other teams in season. Well actually if ya go 2 da main menu, and click on team management, Voila! THat was hard. Jeez...............
THis far in this post buyers will probably think that this game sux, well dont be mistaken ive just covered most of the bad points. For once, this game has EXTRAORDINARY graphics of players faces and stadiums. You can even see the audiences faces (most of them are clapping). You can hear every sound that would be made on the real thing.
Also this game is really real. On Rookie you wont finish the season with 120 wins. Your win total matters what team you choose and how good they are but you'll most likely make the playoffa. However you can never be sure and in other game son Rookie levels you win all da time.
The commentary is a bit boring but they do say different things about every player so its not that boring. They are some flaws with the fielding but its kool all da same. When I played Triple Play at my friends it was an arcade game. This isnt. People beleive me this is da game to buy!

I found HHBB 2002 a lot better than this game.Gameplay (is bad) in this game.
Specially when you trade players, this gane doesn't behave well.
HHBB 2002 is better in those aspects.

Entertaining

Awesome. This is the top baseball game i've played so far. The graphics are stunning, and the controls are easy to master. In Create-A-Player, there are many different accessories to choose from, like blue batting gloves and Red gloves. The pitches for pitchers are cool too. They have the usual pitches, like Curve and Change Up, but they also have pitches like the Knuckle Curve, Slurve, Cutter, Circle Change, and Fork. The gameplay is awesome, and the reaction time is very good. I like the Pitching helper, so you can decide where to pitch it, and where the strike zone is. You can even pitch with with Non-Pitchers. They are good too! My create-a-player Utility man knew a 4-Seam-Fastball, and a slider. This game is awesome. Get All Star Baseball 2002 or 2003!!

What happened to All Star 2001

This game was a great disappointment to me for several reasons: the graphics are ok, but the players don't look like who they are suppose to be. Big Mac, one of the most recognizable players, is just another face in the crowd. There is a good pitch selection, but just try to hit them. The batting controls are terrible, the base running and fielding controls are subpar, and what happened to the ability to change to camera angle?? Rent it before you buy it, or just go get All Star 2001 for the N64. Now there is a good baseball game.

this is the best baseball game for the ps2

this is a pretty good baseball game. the graphics are great and the players look very realistic. the reason i give it 4 stars out of 5 is because i believe the hitting is too easy. everybody else thinks it is hard but i play on the hardest level which is all-star and i am 40 and 27 with yankees. i hit too many home runs and doubles. the fielding is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. there are many statistics in the game. the pitching is easy. the pitchers react to the weather and other than the little minor glitches this game is the baseball game to buy.

Not What i expected

When i first bought this game i thought it was going to be great. The good thing about this game is that the player graphics are breath taking and the game play is really easy. Also the throw back uniforms are pretty cool. So what is it that it only got 2 stars. First of all the graphics for the stadiums are horrible. MLB 2K1 is a thousand times better. Second of all the commentary for the game is dull and boring, It is the samething over and over again. Last the game only has on camera angle and it just dosent fell like you are in the game. All in all this game was not what i expected. This is something i would expect from PS1 not PS2.

..we'll see ya tomorrow night...

This game is a winner and you will be back night after night. Im a die hard Triple Play fan and this game has as many flaws as TP, however it gets over it with good gameplay. Im not interested so much in graphics as much as reality. As mentioned by others u wont get 70-80hr seasons like TP. I took the Giants thru a season and ended Bonds with 62hrs, with only 1HR in last 10 games. Stats are very accurate and there are a bunch of Awards at seasons end , MVP, CY Young, Rookie etc. Flaws. Yes there are some, fielding is quite difficult even after getting used to the game, and on auto i find that the computer makes some strange , and albeit very conservative throwing choices/errors. A comebacker to pitcher if you dont have fielders at DP depth edes up in centre field..grrrr. Commentary is quite repetative and boring at times they dont have the facts, trivia talk about games very often during breaks etc. Also there is no franchise option, every year you get your created players as rookies and the computer rarely(if ever as i can tell) makes trades, a feature that was very prominent in TP. However for all its faults its a great , realistic game, and thats more important. Recommended for Baseball fans with a sense of realism not for arcade fans, stick with TP for that.

A GREAT GREAT BASEBALL GAME

I usually don't write online reviews, but after reading the other user reviews I've gotta speak up. First off, this game has received rave reviews by every magazine that has reviewed it. IGN.com gave it an Editor's Choice award the day after it was released!

This game is BEAUTIFULLY DONE. I've played many (many!) baseball games on PS1, N64, and I've also played Triple Play on PS2. This game is *** BY FAR THE BEST BASEBALL GAME ON THE MARKET ***

Pick a category, fluid graphics, sound, gameplay, realism, replay value -- this game is far and away the leader of the pack.

By comparison, the other contender on the PS2 (EA sports 'Triple Play' baseball) is completely unrealistic, has awkward controls, scoring problems, and in the end plays like a arcade game. I have two friends who bought Triple Play and traded it in for credits toward ASB 2002.

Take my advice. RUN TO THE STORE and BUY THIS GAME NOW!!! If you're a serious baseball fan, or a novice to sports games -- this is one title you will absolutely lose yourself in! A Great Great Game.
