Good game but could have been better....

Being a big baseball fan and fan of the PS2 I was really excited about buying this game. I have heard positive things about the game, but I had to buy it for myself. I am going to be honest with you, hitting is very difficult in this game but so is hitting a 90 mph fast ball in reality. Playing against the computer is hard but winning every game you play makes game play boring. The graphics for the game are mediocre, and the players sometime don't represent the actual size of the players. If you are a Mets fan it is frustrating not to have Benny Agbayani, Rick Reed, or Shinjo on the team. Overall, I suggest buying this game but I will definitely be interested in renting the other 2 to compare in the future.

Not perfect, but a very solid game

I have always been a big fan of the Acclaim ASB series for the N64 -- I own 2 of the three. Therefore, when I learned that Acclaim was bringing the franchise to the PS2, I was excited. All of the other Acclaim sports were bested by EA offerings, but baseball was one sport the company still had a stronghold of.

After first playing ASB 2002, I have to say that I was a little disappointed. While the graphics were great, there were a number of flaws that were not present in earlier versions of the game. Fielding seemed sluggish, as was the baserunning (I still have yet to hit a triple, and I have played over 50 games). The lack of camera angles, the lack of minor league prospects, the inability to even choose pitch types for created pitchers, and no instant replay -- these were all features of previous years that are now missing. Worst of all, Acclaim still does not allow you to trade players on other teams during the season.

But I must say that the more that I play the game, the more I appreciate it. There are some additions to take the place of some shortfalls -- pitchers have varying numbers of pitches, hitting stats are now even kept for pitchers -- these are some improvements over the old games. And, since I am a Mets fan, when I heard the planes over Shea Stadium, I was sold. The improved graphics package truly provides a TV style appearance, and the improvement in stances and pitcher deliveries is noticeable. You can almost see Armando Benitez staring down the hitter. Nice touches, including mascots and (finally) the inclusion of real faces on the players make up for some of the shortcomings.

In all, I think that this could be a nearly perfect game next year, once they build on the positives and work on the negatives. But even as it stands, it is a great game that gets more interesting the more you play. I have since played the other offerings on the PS2, and I know that I made the right choice.

The best baseball sim for ps2.. but could be improved

Aclaim sports, finaly introduced the AllStar baseball series to playstation. They fully succeeded in bringing a quality game to the system whcih is capable of so much. Why only 4 stars? Simply because the great graphics aren't taken advantage of, because there is only one angle to chose from. Now i'm sure you all already knew that, but im just reinforcing the fact that this needs to be changed, because the graphics can't seem to get any better. They totally took advantage ofwhat ps2 has to offer. Also, the gameplay is superb. In tpb, you win games 14-0 on 10 homeruns. Fun for awhile, but for a real baseball and sports video game fan, it doesn't cut the mustard. When i started winning and losing games from a variety of 6-3, 1-0, 10-2 i became extremely happy. Numbers of players are also extremley accurate. In a season, you don't end up hitting 60 homers at the all star break. I love the realism in this game, it really makes it worth the money. Overall i really enjoy this game, and was surprised that acclaim has become able to put out a quality game like this. -Peace out

Fatal error.

The truth is out there. And, the mixed reviews for this baseball game are certainly out there too. So I, based on those reviews opted to purchase ASBB 2002 as I thought I could deal with the games alleged problems. I'll get to those in a minute, but first let me say this. I think most of us that enjoy sports video games like to play as the teams we follow in real life. Don't we? And, do we also like the ability to "tweak" our chosen teams and improve their chances on the video playing field? Especially if you happen to be a Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls or Chicago Bears fan? Like me. So I like a video game to allow me to do what I want to do. It's my game isn't it? If that means creating a player, trading a player, editing a player, releasing a player or whatever, I WANT THE ABILITY TO DO THAT! ASBB I think is lacking in this option. You can create a player and the number of options to do so while truly incredible lacks in one aspect. You can't create a "superstar". The best you can do is turn out an "above average" player which is fine, but also limits your POWER. But even more importantly than that, you cannot trade players in the SEASON mode, if the other team rejects the deal. As a Cub fan, I tried to get Greg Maddux and Mark Grace back, but the Braves and the Diamondbacks would not accept my offer. Not that I blame them, but like I said before, THIS IS MY GAME! I found out later there is a way around this (you can make the trades in the exhibition mode), but I still don't care for the limitations. Now as I said before all of the criticisms you may have read in other reviews of ASBB 2002 are valid. The AI base running is pathetic, the camera angles are limited, instant replays are CPU controlled only, the ball coming off the bat camera angles make fielding awkward, and there is no drama when someone hits a homerun. However none of the above ruin the gameplay for me. After all we should know by now, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT SPORTS VIDEO GAME. One has to deal with the imperfections and just enjoy the virtual reality as it is. But I can't do that with ASBB 2002 because of the glitch that my game (now returned and refunded) came up with in the 3rd game I played in SEASON mode with the Cubs. It was in the 8th inning and the Cubs and Expos were tied 2-2. I was letting the CPU play the game (as I was occupied elsewhere) and Ron Coomer (spelling?) came in as a pinch hitter. Then to my utter dismay, he was then pitching for the Cubs in the top of the next inning! HE'S AN INFIELDER! So, quickly I jumped in to intervene, yanked him and put in an actual relief pitcher thinking that maybe what I had seen was just a fly in the ointment. Then I let the game continue on it's own, while I went on with my other business. When I returned the game was displaying the box score. The Cubs had won 3-2 in 12 innings and the winning pitcher for the

northsiders was Joe Girardi. Joe is the Cub's RESERVE CATCHER! I like to play full seasons, I like to see REALISTIC statistics, I do not want to see my RESERVE CATCHER,and my PINCH HITTING INFIELDER leading the league in saves. And, I'll be danged if I keep a game that allows that to happen! I will be real interested in seeing if this happens to anybody else. Maybe I got a lemon, but what with the return policy for most stores regarding video games, I will be real reluctant to buy another one.

Ugh, they were close, and then went backwards

I am a baseball enthusiast, and I was so excited when All Star Baseball came out two years ago for the n64, I was one of the first to buy, and loved it. I got into the season about 85 games with my friend, and then the file was corrupted, and was so dissapointed.
So I waited for the ps2 version to come out, and it was TERRIBLE. The players don't matchup with the ball in the field (ie. ball is 5 feet next to him, all of sudden he has the ball), you can't throw a friggin pitch by the computer without him swinging, and if you do and it's in the zone it's still a ball, and a bunch of other big problems I just didn't enjoy. Not to mention the fact that half way into my 162 game season, the file got corrupted again (cmon Quality Assurance!) and I had to restart a season!!!!
I went back to the n64 version for comparison, and it was better all around in speed, performance, and player interaction. I couldn't return the game quick enough.
WHEN IS SONY GOING TO GET THE IDEA THAT IT"S TIME FOR SEGA'S BASEBALL SERIES (2k2) TO COME TO SONY???? Till then, I have to (regretfully) avoid all baseball games. *sigh*

Don't believe the hype

Generally it's difficult to find console baseball games that are worthwhile, but I've read that this is the title to buy in 2001 if you're looking for the best combination of realism and fun gameplay. Let me tell you that those reviews would be wrong. The game certainly looks pretty enough, with realstic player models and beutiful ballparks. The problem is that the game is presented so badly you can barely see any of the stadiums besides the first 15 rows of fans and the outfield wall. The camera angle provided is set way too low and besides detracting from the aesthetics it also greatly hinders fielding during gameplay. What's worse is that there are no other camera angles provided! I can't say I've played enough to really rate the batting and pitching, but it's a pretty standard cursor based system. For me, one of the biggest things in rating gameplay of a baseball title is how the ball transitions from the batter/pitcher screen to the wider view once the ball is in play. I might consider this the single biggest thing to thrill or annoy me in a video baseball game, espescially with home runs. This game falls horribly short on this front. If a ball is hit with a chance to leave the park I want suspense! I want to see a panoramic view of most of the field and the outfielder drifting towards the wall as the ball is in flight. Will it go out? Will it be caught on the track? This is for my money the biggest rush these games can provide and All Star Baseball 2002 has totally removed this thrill by making sure you know its a homer right off the bat. The camera follows the ball all the way out in arcade-like fashion and takes all the fun out of it. This is another in a long line of mediocre baseball titles dating back to PS1 that is neither really fun to play or deep enough to hold my interest with multiple season play and such. Why can't someone get this sport right?!

Just Awesome

I'll admit it, am a big fan of the Triple Play Baseball games and just loved all of them. That is until Triple Play Baseball turned up.

At first i liked it a lot but still thpught graphics should be a bit better for a ps2 game. When I got better a the game and started playing on harder levels is when the damage was done. I mean finishing a season with 125 wins and having Jeter and Justice both with more than 70 homers isn't what i expected. So i returned the game(Lucky I didn't lose the receipt) and decided next time to rent a game before buying.

I rented All Star Baseball 2002 and loved it. It had awesome graphics and was really realistic. It has a few minor glitches but the graphics and reality make up for it. All I can say is rent it first(Im sure ull love it) and if u like it then......BUY IT!

Game needs improvements, but still a great game

First off, people are dead wrong about some of the complaints. You CAN beat the computer if you are somewhat a gamer and not a complete newbie. Yes, it takes a few games to master the moves and buttons, but after a while I play in allstar mode and still can beat the computer 22 - 1. Second, you CAN create great players. I don't know were people get off saying you can only make average players. I have created batters with an A- rating and pitchers with an A rating depending on the statistics you use. By taking away stats from bunting, patience, and so forth and adding them to Power, Contact, and Speed. The created batter that I have made, so far, has 52 homers and its only the end of May. Yes, the game only has one view for both fielding and batting which hampers the game. The computer has never tried to steal a base and the fielding engine in this game works funny at times. But, players like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa are potrayed well. I don't advise throwing a slider or fastball in the middle of the strike zone, they will homer. Another drawback is that you can't see the ball placement until the ball is thrown. Which makes it harder for new players but is nice when you get a hang of the game. Fielding is hard so i would advise for the outfield to use auto fielding. Stealing second is somewhat easy if you have a fast runner and get a good lead. Lastly, the game is great to play. It is not as good in gameplay as last years on the N64, but the graphics are awesome. If you want a baseball game that is realistic, and not arcadish than this is the game for you. If you want a baseball game that is "perfect in every way" wait until next year because this year doesn't have one.

Alright

Graphics are pretty cool, new stadiums, mascots, and the players really look like themselves. But hitting is so hard, and fielding is even harder. When I thought I hit a ball deep in the gap the computer gets there in no time and even dives. On the otherhand I can never get there fast enough. Plyers are very slow. You can throw a guy out at first from the outfield sometimes. I have played 7 full games and have only won once. Trying to Hit is really frustrating.

Great graphics and boring game play

The graphics are very good. But, the game play is terrible. There is no consistency to batting. Just when you've timed a pitch well and expect a great hit, it's a pop-up or a weak fly ball. And, hitting a home run is just too difficult. Perhaps Acclaim should remember that games are supposed to be FUN not frustrating.
