There's a reason why this was the best selling video game of 1999. When I popped this into my playstation for the first time..allmost exactly a year ago, I expected a lot, this coming from the people that brought me Destruction Derby, a game that has given me countless hours of entertainment. Driver delivered, big time. They created a free-roam city enviroment that was just incredible. The civillian cars, the police, the 70's muscle cars..how can you not love this game?
The game has the undercover mode, which is the actual game itself, in which you play Tanner, the undercover cop that plays freelance Driver for the mob. Tons of missions, tons of beautiful cutscenes with an involving plotline that concludes with a twist I dont think anybody expected.
The game has Mini-Games, where you can see how long you can run from the cops, see if you can follow and trash a specific car in the shortest time possible, or try your hand at the practice course. The game also has the Take A Drive mode, which lets you take your car and do whatever you want with it.
That's where the fun begins. Especially with citys like San Francisco, where you've got some nice hills, you can record police crashes that are absolutely incredible. Very few games have given me this much entertainment.
And to top this masterpeice off, we get some of the most classic 70's music ever created. This is a must-buy, if you havent allready.

It's about time! Finally a game with real-life driving through real cities with total real-life situations. This game is a blast. Whether you're doing donuts in the street or lawn, smashing other cars for fun, fish-tailing around corners, scaring the pedestrians, or in a high-speed pursuit with Johnny Law...this game is extremely hard to put down! Worth every penny! I am eagerly awaiting a sequel!

Although not as sleek or sophisticated as some of the other driving games on the market, Driver does provide something the others do not. A sense of adventure. The game does not force feed a load of cartoonish or mindless sets of missions, but rather provides a well developed story line that gets the gamer engrossed in the situations and circumstances the character finds himself in. Other great attributes of the game are the tons of "extras" included besides the main storyline. You can have hours of fun just driving around a particular city, getting chased by the Fuzz or chasing targets and demolishing them. The movie style replays are also very cool to watch after completing a mission. The analog controller is very well adapted for playing this game, with the vibrations complementing the Sound Effects perfectly. I recommend this game to any gamer of any age. It is a solid game and you won't be disappointed.

This game is so cool, I own several Playstation Video Games dealing with racing like Need for Speed, Gran Turismo etc. But I never felt like I was really into the game like Driver, it feels like you are really a driver or bad guy! I like the part where you have to do that test in the parking garage, it took a few tries, but when that guy said "you got the job" it was well worth it. I love the 70s feel. I also enjoy the fact that you can stop at stoplights etc. The only grip as one person said is the cops, they practically ram you into the buildings. I wish they made the game more realistic cop wise, instead of the cops going after you when you didn't do anything, they should make the cops only go after you when you are really doing a felony. I think that would make it more realistic. But that is nothing compared to the great game play. If you are a girl you will like this game a lot. Being a girl, it is hard to find a game without lots of gore and other sick stuff. So this game is perfect for boys and girls. Hey even my mom loves it!
THIS IS THE GAME TO GET FOR 1999!

I should rephrase that, number 1 driving adventure! That's what it is. No more driving around a track, but actually proving your driving skills on the streets. If you liked gta, but didn't like the view, this is the game for you. The game has very realistic damage and driving handling, and the missions are fun. If you get tired of the undercover part of the game you can always "take a ride", or play some of the driving games such as; survival, dirt track, pursuit, checkpoint, and several others. What makes it even better are the cheats that you can put in to make the game a real challenge, from mini cars, to stilts, to invincibility. Overall this game is very realistic and has now become number 1 on my list of driving games (yes in front of Gran Turismo).

I think that driver is really fun and has awesome game play! The graphics when you play are pretty good, but when you're watching the little cut scenes the graphics are really good, Kinda like Final Fantasy 8. I would recommend Driver for any one who likes driving games and getting chased by cops!

Driver is sure to go down as a classic in the Playstation library. It puts Grand Theft Auto to shame. Anyone who's ever watched car chases in movies such as French Connection, Bullit, and the Driver should buy this now. Okay, so the plot and video sequences are underpar. Big deal, what makes this game great is the control and the fun factor. When you are speeding up a San Francisco hill and fly right over top of another car, you will thank me for recommending this game. The director mode is my favorite. You can save your replays and direct your own high octane car chase. The classic 70's cars range from a Buick, a Nova, a Cadillac, and many others. Trust me, go out and buy this game now. It took me over 20 trys to beat the last level.
You are the wheel man

Ever wondered what it would be like to run from the police instead of just pulling over when those pretty red lights are in your rear view mirror? Well Driver lets you do just that. You are the wheel man in this great game. You start out as ex-stockcar racing driver who is hired by the local law enforcement to go undercover and infiltrate the local organized crime. But when your hired, it seems as though your boss forgot to tell the rest of the force you were a good guy. You begin in a cheap hotel room with a decent ride sitting outside, a car similar to a 69' camaro. You get Jobs or missions by answering the telephone in your room. These consist of anything from giving someone a ride, driving your car through the front of a store window, or even being the get away man for a bank robery.
Driver pretty much gives you total freedom to go anywhere in the city you are currently at. The controls are very simple to learn, but for anyone who wants to realy experience this game I would advise buying a steering wheel, it realy enhances the game play. The actual game is pretty tough, the police can downright be insanely tough to get away from. The graphics are wonderfull, providing great eye candy around every corner. While you drive around, the game records your every move letting you later on make a movie of your most recent drive. The options in this director mode are wonderfull. Enabling you to recreate those cool car chases from the old 70's and 80's flicks like "Gone in 60 Seconds."
Overall Driver is a great game that will appeal to anyone who likes driving games. It provides fast furious chases, a mix of different scenarios, and some great extras. You may find it a tad difficult at first but stick with it, and in the end you will be happy you did. Don't pass this one up, a must for anyone who likes any type of driving game.
Driver is fun, but could use a few improvements

The game claims to have 4 realistic cities, but none of them lived up to that claim. I mean, since when does a freeway have intersections? And does Miami really have a monorail that people can jump out of? (You'll see what I mean when you play it)
This is a very fun game, only because you can smash into everything, including cop cars, and actually see the damage! (unlike some other games)
My gripes? The weak storyline gets very boring after a while, and the fact that these gangsters actually talk the way that they do is a huge insult to my intelligence. The graphics are extremely boxy, and it seems that everyone in N.Y. drives a big, long, black car, and it rains everyday. (It also seems to rain everyday in L.A. too) Also, in the time that it takes to change scenes you can fix a full course dinner, which you could eat in between the next scene change!
Overall, I give this game 3 stars, but for realism, -1! I was so disappointed when I played this game, due to the fact that graphics are weak, the storyline is patronizing, and the realistic cities fall way short of that claim.
For pure fun, I give it 5 stars, but the lack of realism draws away from the fun aspect. When I first started playing it, I loved how some of the missions were to actually destroy another car! (For the destuctive side in us) However, that gets old quick, and there is nothing to keep you going after that runs out. This game is for you if you have money to burn, and own every other PS game ever made, but even if you don't, it's still fun to play if you have some time to kill.
Finally, a driving game I enjoy!

After buying every racing/driving game on the market since the introduction of the Playstation (and taking them all back after being disappointed in some fashion or another), I finally have found a driving game that I enjoy! This game plays with the same feel as Grand Theft Auto, except with the graphics of Destruction Derby. A lethal combination of fun and a never ending shelf-life. Unlike many of the "popular" driving games, this one actually gives your car damamge when you hit something. Finally, a driving game that has more than just "true driving physics"; it is actually realistic. It's about time someone figured it out...
