Driver is Tops for Driving Games in 1999

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: December 30, 1999

The game has all the realism of actually driving on crowded city streets. The crashed are almost too realistic. Your car will crash into another car and the accident will cause that car to smoke, the lights to break and it will even come to a slow rolling stop. Your car has active suspension, it bounces off jumps and needs to be driven around corners at high speeds being mindful of oversteer so as to enter and exit the apex of turns to maximize your get-a-way potential. The cops are as aggressive as possible and make the game a true challenge. I would get the codes after you complete the game, and re-try. The game is fun to just drive around. The driving test needs a bit of work in that the directions don't clearly spell out the purpose and the way to complete certain tasks are not well defined. Other than that, this game and Gran Turismo 2 are phenominal! 4 1/2 stars.

"Suspect is heading up in the charts!"

Well why can't all driving games be like this? Instead of thinking about norms and how driving is restricted to race tracks Reflections produce this belter that takes you back to the likes of Bullitt, Starsky and hutch and The Italian Job.

This game is different to most as you are BAD! Well not totally bad, just undercover. You see in this game you play a cop named Tanner who has been sent undercover as a getaway driver in the hope that he can bring one of the biggest mobs in the U.S.A.

However it isn't simply drive away from the bank to the safehouse routine, certain missions involve totalling another vehicle so they can't escape, pursuit of other vehicles (end of first city being a prime example and even being part of a murder plot!

While all this is going on you are not immune to police activity, as only you and your boss know about the job at hand, so meaning that if you are spotted behaving suspiciously they'll take you in!

The environment of cities is fantastic! While you can deviate as much as you like, other road users will be stopping at red lights, keeping to speed limits and so on... It is that paves the way for being chased, as if you are spotted by police breaking these laws then they are after you!

Not only does the game feature a great undercover mode (main game) there are many sub-games to try your hand at. From trailblazer mode where you must tag targets all around the city (difficult) to the awesome and extremely challenging mode, where every cop in the city is not only chasing you, but they are in faster cars that do well more damage! This mode is a good old laugh (try it in San Francisco and you'll see what I mean!).

If the above modes don't grab your fancy (saddo) than you can try take a drive, this is where you drive around a city with no missions at all! You can do as you please, no time limits, nothing (apart from cops of course!) What is great about this mode is that if you park up you can sit and watch what looks like a real city with people driving by the rules, pedestrians strolling the pavements and parks, and you can even see people sat down at resturaunts!

This is a cracker even a year after release, get this now while it is cheap (even though it is well worth paying the full-price) and play. You won't be disappointed.

An excellent time filler until its sequel arrives...

The driving game I was waiting for

No doubt about it - this one is the driving game I was waiting for all these years. Pure fun. The best thing about it is the control of the car. This is the first game I know where you can throw your car into a turn and easily control your skid using your handbrake and steering. If you're skilled enough it really feels like 'sailing' on a concrete road. Unlike other driving games, the brakes here are very strong, and when you hit the brakes, the car really stops. When you pass all the missions on the 'undercover' section of the game, you get new cars and cheats enabled, which, of course, increase the fun level. Some of the new cars, combined with the 'super fast cars' cheat can go in speeds up to 300 mph. Not so realistic, but very much fun. The control of the car is, naturally, much more difficult in those speeds (In San Francisco you spend much of your time airborne).

As for realism, this is a whole other thing. The graphics is quite good, but some things don't make any sense, such as: - People drive on highways at the same speed they drive on roads inside the city. - Cops get angry whenever you touch your handbrake even if you're standing still. - Cops keep blaming you for hitting other vehicles even when your car is flipped over. - I've never been to the US, but I can't imagine all the turns in New York, Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles are right angled. - The other cars on the road are very much robots-like, and they will slam into other cars even when it's easily avoidable.

So if you're looking for fun driving - this is the game for you, but if you're looking for realism - it's probably not. I just wish they make a PC version of Driver 2.

A great game if not impossible

This game is so much fun that you just can't take your hands off it. It has a fun game engine- in the style of Destruction Derby(but much better). It has fun missions that are just great. Then there's replay value which it has plenty with the driving games option. But of course, there's one problem with this game. I can't beat it! In fact, I haven't met one person who has beat this game. I know it's beatable. I almost did it once. But it takes cheat codes or a perfect run to beat this game. And that's almost impossible. One day I will beat this game.
Another drawback to this game is the corny storyline. Though it connects everything and explains a lot of stuff, it kind of gets corny at times. And I mean really corny. But it is needed to understand what's going on behind the scences. It does add something to the game. So I guess it is cool that it's there, I just wish it was better acted and better written. MTV can do a better job than these guys did on some scences.

Amazingly addictive and fun.

I got this game because I wanted a good street-arcade racer where you could just drive around smashing into things. I got what I wanted. Driver includes four real US cities (relatively accurate in street layouts) complete with traffic and police who generally want to smash you up because you've broken the law. The traffic is fairly realistic, going so far as to have their own accidents occasionally and honking at you for reckless driving or nearly broadsiding them.

The free play option, as I like to call it, as opposed to the actual storyline is a much better use of the game. The storyline itself, while originally a good idea, is rather vague and becomes repetitious. In addition, the final mission is impossible. Let me repeat that. The final mission is impossible. Read it and weep.

Of course, one of the really big fun factors is being able to customize your replays. The replay editor allows you to position various cameras from all kinds of angles: in car, chase (from full 360 degrees) and various stationary cameras which can be told to follow your car as it goes by or not. Make sure you have a lot of memory cards if buying this game. You'll soon fill up your spaces with saved replays (they take two blocks each).

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because of its poor storyline, impossible mission, and its tendency to freeze from time to time. There are plenty of graphical bugs as well and I've found myself inside a building every now and then. Collision physics have gone haywire on me a couple of times where I'll be coasting almost at a stop, brush a car and go flying seventy feet into the air. Oh well, you can't have everything be perfect.

A Good Solid Effort

This is one of the best car and racing games ever. I mean how can you not like a game that has 70's muscle cars in it!! Granted there are better games out their(such as GTA 3, and Driver 2) but this game really gives you a run for your money! BUY this if you like car games, look at the price how can you miss out on a deal like this!

I could not complete the driver test you have to beat before the game opens up. It was way to hard! I consider myself an average gamer, but I tried and tried and couldn't complete all the things it wants you to do before the game opens up. So all I could do was drive around two cities. For a driving game, I'll wait and get Grand Turismo II. Why did they make the entry level so frustrating? Maybe it's fun after that, but who knows? Poorly thought out by the developer.

Very Good Game.

This is a very good game. The graphics are pretty sharp compared to Driver 2 and the gameplay is good and realistic. The cities are pretty well detailed and pretty accurately portrayed. The levels are numererous and are hardly ever boring. The cut scenes may be a little cheesy but they only add to the experience. I would say to anybody who is considering getting Driver 2 to get Driver first its much better.
