The original Driver still has fun to be derived from it, but it doesn't have as much class or finesse as its sequel. The graphics look terrible and the city feels lifeless most of the time. The police chases, missions, crashes, and a few other things keep this game from slipping into total mediocrity and keeps the experience fun most of the time. The controls and camera need work because of how unsteady they can be. Like I said, this game still has plenty of fun left in it, but you should look for better options before turning to this game.

Very fun

SECOND BEST CRIME-DRIVING GAME ON THE PS1!

Thats after Driver 2!-though Driver 2 has worse graphics but you can do more stuff.
These were the days where GTA was a horsekrap 2D game that only the odd geeks liked and NO they are not classics-even SMB has better graphics than it!
After Driver 1 then comes Worlds Scariest Police Chases, then The Italian Job,Than the rest(if there were any)
in Driver you "make yr own movie" and when in "T-A-R" you automatically record whatever you do in the game then you can watcha cinematic replay of your performance, then make a "movie" for your own amusement or to beat your friends(although there were no multi-player, you could use it Film director in a way of multiplayer).
Driver had good music that filled in the action!
You had 4 cities to roam around in:Miami,San Francisco,L.A. and NYC.
you could annoyy the cops for fun, destroy traffic,go on peoples lawns and leave treadmarks on them, crash up the fence,go on a rally rampage or find a ramp(or something like it) and zoom off into the air.Gosh what fun it was then.
Driver 2 is only better because the cops in different cities had different cop cars, and you can jack cars-which was part of the reason why GTAIII got made. However even if GTA3 was lightyears ahead of Driver 2-D2 was *still* the first EVER game that you could car-jack in 3D which is what Rockstar planned to do with GTA but they were beaten to the position by a hollywood driving game!
Lots of games use the car-jack concept now-so there are some clones.

If i had to pick my 5 faverite PS1 games ever they would be(in no specific order)

Metal Gear Solid
Driver 2
Driver 1
Tomb Raider 3
GTA1-Not really it would be WWF Smackdown! 2:KYR since i am partly a wrestling fan(of TNA and WWE) and it had good multi-player.

MGS is still the best set of stealth-games even today-Splinter Cell is worse than hell!,Hitman is second best and i never played Syphon Filter.

Definatly a Legend worthyness

THIS game is cool, you get four U.S. Cities Miami,Florida and San Francisco,Ca. and Los Angeles,ca. and finnaly New York all of these cities are 70% successful rplicas of the real thing. You play a driving expert Tanner whose mission is to go undercover as a Mafia man & a Gangster and seek and destroy the Castaldi group.LISTINGS:GRAPHICS:8/10:the graphics are not what we would now call up 2 date they are 1999 PSONE graphics because people are blocky but, what earns this game it great rating is that the damaging effects on vehicles look so realistic.SOUND:9/10:the sound is actually great the smashing sounds sound real, the cops sirens also the cops radio, ure able to hear it when in persuit or hiding.GAMEPLAY:9/10;gameplay is cool i love smashing into cop cars when/or when not their after you because it realy irritates them i also love driving on private property and breaking fences up.there are very little ramps around but if i do find some thing to ramp on i reverse so far back that i`m able to realy cut air.you unlock types of car to drive in including Taxi,Police car, ect.RECCOMENDINGS:i would reccommend this game to to anyone who like fast cars, ramps, getting chased/or chasing or love movie style storylines.COMPARE: this game knocks GTA 1 and 2 out of the water but is beaten by five other games Driver 2,Driver 3,GTAIII,GTA:Vce Cty and GTA San Andras.SIMMILARITIES:On the PSONE this game is very simmilar to The Italian Job and The Worlds Scariest Police Chases. worthless waste of money

I bought this game for a present because I thought my brother would enjoy it. I wanted to try it too, because I fell for the marketing hype (including tainted reviews in magazines that act in the interests of their advertisers instead of their readers). I also wanted to cruise around San Francisco.

My brother didn't like it, and he gave it to my neices. They said it was too hard for them. I laughed, borrowed it from them, and it ended up being a waste of time. I'm sorry I bought it in the first place.

Why, might you ask? You are REQUIRED to pass a very difficult driving test before you can do anything else with the game. The test consists of some maneuvers that require a lot of skill, and even if you are able to do each one of them, you have to do them in so little time that it is nearly impossible to pass. There is no cheat code to get around it, and you can't even go for a leisurely cruise through the cities without passing this lousy test. So for me, anyway, it makes the game useless and a useless game is a worthless game unless you enjoy getting frustrated.

I have Driver 2, and recommend that instead. At least you can play the game without having to pass a stupid test. It's difficult, so you might not play well at first, but at least you can do *something* with it. Don't get me wrong, though: Driver 2 is far from easy and the level of difficulty can be frustrating at times. At least it isn't as worthless as this piece of junk.

You can get plenty of useless CDs in the mail for free. Why pay for one?

Extremely Addicting...

This game, along with other PSX classics like Ridge Racer 4 and Tekken 3, probably soaked up to half my free time in my freshman year in college. This is a classic game and deserves all the recognition it gets. There aren't many other games where you can drive thru regular traffic and T-bone a cop car just for sh**'s & giggles. Plus, the music is funky and true to the era the game takes place in, and so are the movie cuts and the cars...speaking of that, anybody whining about the poor handling of the cars apparently doesn't understand physics : Hello people! a near 2 ton 71' 454 Chevelle is going to hug a corner like a 97' Honda Civic! It's called weight distribution, look it up. Cars of the 70's era were like that, it's called authenticity and i'm glad the programmers did that.
The graphics aren't the greatest, but just wait till Driver 3 comes out. One complaint is you can't run over people like Grand Theft Auto, but oh well. There is great attention to detail in other places, such as the locations, as far as I know, most of the streets in San Francisco are true to real life. Other great details include your car losing its hubcaps if drive to aggressively (ala the movie Bullitt). All in all, this game has classic written all over it, and is probably one the best games for old-school Playstation fans.

not as good as GTA

As I said above Driver is not as good as Grand Theft Auto. Graphics are really jaggey, though, but better than GTA's 2-D graphics. There are only 4 cities to drive in but they are alot of fun. The reason I said that it is not as good as GTA is because you can't steal other cars, and you can't shoot people. But, don't think that Driver is not a good game, it is. It has a great 3 person shooter and the gameplay is just plain FUN.

DONT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!

I really hated this game, it is so complicated and no fun at all. I looked at the back and thought it could be fun. Every step you have to do just right and then when you do it right, you still don't pass the level and what not. If you like complicated, challenging, and non-fun games you'd like this one. Comming from a 16 year old this is what i think.
