Not just another resident rip-off

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 9
Date: August 03, 2001

it would be unfair to pass this game by as another resident evil rip off because, although the basic premise is the same it is actually a very different game in every respect. And with the exception of 2, dino crisis easily excels any of the resident back catalogue.

The graphics are very good and use a different technique than RE allowing for much more user interaction. In RE the graphics are made up of pre-rendered backgrounds but DC uses polygonal characters and backgrounds to better effect and look very much like the areas they are trying to convey. This style of graphics works better than in RE and heightens the tension very well.

The gameplay is more innovative than in the RE games with more puzzles and less emphasis placed on action. DC's weapons are reasonably feeble compared to those in RE but this works for the better. Instead of just splattering every enemy you come across you need to think of alternatives as shooting everything will soon either get you killed or make you run out of ammo fast. Throughout the game you have to use security fences to your advantage, running past a raptor when its back is turned, past a sensor and then turn on the fence, much better than just killing the raptor and more satisfying to boot.

Enemies are also more intelligent than in RE games, as they would need to be, and will chase you through doors and follow your trail of blood. They are all also more agile than those in RE and so those encounters you cannot avoid are made even more visceral.

The use of puzzles through the game is also well done and some are real brainteasers, they are also more inventive than in RE, such as finding the right combination of gases for a poisoned room to gain entry or searching corpses for fingerprints to make a keycard. Much better than RE's simple need key, find key approach.

The enemies in the game is where it starts to slip a bit with not too many variations in there but this isnt much of a problem as dino encounters are not all that frequent anyway. The way the dinos are presented to you is good and the ways you are encouraged to beat them is refreshing. such as guiding a pterodactyl into a fan or electrocuting a raptor.

The main boss, although it hd to be a T-Rex, is better a good alternative to the tyrants in the RE series and provides a constant menace much like in RE3 and always seems to be breathing down your neck. Even when you think youre safe he bursts through a window or finds some way of spoiling your day.

The longevity of the game is pretty much what you expect of a game of this type, a fast play through can take approximately 3 hours but the first time took me about 5 1/2.The game length did surprise me though as at one point i was sure that i had finished the game but i was only half way through.

There is significant replay value in the game with three endings and many different costumes to be unlocked and with the game made in such a way you can play through and experience it differently each time.

Overall there is not much to gripe about with this game and i really cannot find much fault with it at all. Although the game length is expected with this sort of game it can seem annoying to others for it to be over so fast but with MGS the game is so enjoyable that this isnt a problem. Also hardcore blasters may complain about the puzzle orientated gameplay but if you ask me its far better this way.

i'd give it a 95%

This game is a dream come true, whether you liked RE or not!

This game is a few steps ahead of Resident Evil! The camera angles are improved, and perfected. Some will hopefully be used in future RE games! The FMVs are absolutely amazing. They run perfectly, making the game as realistic as humanly possible. The graphics, sound and music are all great! The graphics really push the Playstation to its limit, but keep it to where it still plays without a problem! The storyline branches at points, making it all that much more enjoyable. The story itslef is absolutely great. The way the saving works could have been made better, but it sure beats the heck out of finding ribbons and typewriters. This game is almost flawless, and I reccomend it to anyone who enjoys RE, or just likes being scared. If you hated RE because of the zombies' slowness, then this is the game for you. The dinosaurs are FAST! You'll like RE more after you've beat this game. Contains life-like graphics, very light language, and extensive gore. Rated mauture; 17+

Dino CrisisýWhat is it and how is it?

When I first heard of Dino Crisis, I though it was going to be a Resident Evil but only with dinosaurs. I was partly wrong. The system for the game is rather similar to the Resident Evil series but it is more than just a Resident Evil with dinosaurs. The gameplay system may be a bit annoying at first since you can only carry 10 items around at a time, but after a while you get used to it. My favorite idea in the game is mixing items together to create newer and more powerful items. The CG in the game is beautifully done, with more realistic figures and those dinosaurs look REAL! The story in the game is rather interesting. At first I thought it was going to be a Jurassic Park lookalike but no, it was a whole new idea. You can pick your routes in this game and there are three different endings that make the game much more durable than others. However, each game much also have both sides of the coin. What I found annoying in the game was that I kept running out of ammunition for my weapons. Ammunition is scarce in the game as well as some areas without that many save points. What is annoying (and challenging) were the puzzles. Many times the puzzles are very interesting as compared to some other games I've played. These puzzles in the game put your mental capability to the test! At the same time, when your stuck in a area and desperate for a save, the puzzles are annoying. So in conclusion: Dino Crisis is a great game, but they could've done a better job if they spent more time on it. Get it! I'm all for it!

A great game - with little annoyances

Although dinosaurs may not be as scary as zombies, they are a hell of a lot smarter and faster. This game captures the essence of being inside Jurassic Park. And the grandfather of all dinosaurs - T-Rex - makes several grand entrances throughout the game. Sweet. This game really takes the Resident Evil paradigm and molds into a different animal (pardon the pun). My biggest grouse is the fact that you have to run from one end of the level to the other far too often. More localised puzzles would have been better, I think. This doesn't detract from the fun factor of this game. If you like Resident Evil, but a litle tired of slow moving, mindless zombies, take Dino Crisis for a spin. Your innards may depend on it.

You play Regina a U.S solider on a mission on a Island far away. Her mission (co Gale and Copper) find out what Doctor Kirk is doing on the Island. And eleminate him if he is doing something nasty.

This sound very easy, but I can promise you that it is not so easy. Dinos have taken completely controll of the base on the Island. And they want your blood. There are many types of dinos.I find this game very fun. Because it contains action, adventure and lots of brain tbbeling puzzels. This a must buy game for everyone with a playstation.

The best game ever made

This game rocks! there is none better! I think its worth the $50! The strategy guides are great espcially the detailed ones! I think my favorite part is when you have to run around a destroyed helicopter wth the T-Rex on your tail! And The SPAS12 Is the coolest gun there is! all in this is a must get !

My dad originaly baught this to play himself but after three days of not getting around to it I decided to give it a try. From the first video this game pulls you in and dosn't let go.First off the larger videos have exelent graphics the gameplay graphics are pretty good too.Second the music sorta makes you want to keep looking behind you're shoulder(just in case.)Next there are three endings, four costumes and a mini game to unlock so you're getting aot for you're money.Last this game keeps jumping out at you wether it's a twist in plotline or a Raptor smashing through a window.O.k. we've covered all the pros now it's time to talk about what sucks with this game.First you're weapon selection is pretty slim. You get a handgun a shotgun and a grenade gun blows do'nt it.Next you might find you'reself strpped for ammo when you need it the most it's not as bad as Resident Evil but it's bad. Finally some of the puzzles or chalanges you will face are nearly impossable to get through so you definetly want a player's guide.Other than those downsides I highly recomend you buy this game.

FUN CHALLAING AND not much action.,,(i would like more)

yes this game DOES NOT HAVE MUCH ACTION. this game is basically a game for pepz who love puzzles. i was a littel disapointed but the game was still very fun. it remindes me of final fantasy5... goes on and on and on. you think you are at the very end of the gmae and then suddenly something happens and you figure out that you are only half way through the game. but this game is MUCH more creative then most games like this. insted of need card key get card key it is get finget print scanner find dead body scan finger print and make key card on a computer.the AI level seems to bet better too. the dinos can follow you like marys littel lam into some other hall or room and scare the [daylights] out of you. this game has a lot of surprises too. you never know when a dino is going to jump through the window and start chewing on your arm.the game does not have many dinos thougn. the only ones they have are the littel tiny ones that bite your legs off and kill you before you know it , the medium sized villosorapter which likes to chew on your head, arms or dead carcasses. and then there is the big grey thing that i have not clue on how to describe.(it is small compared to the GIANT t-rex)this game also has a problem with weponry. you have about um.... 3 guns in the whole game. the pistol shotgun and grenade launcher. there is also ammo problems. i would be fighting my head off agains 3 velos that followed me and i have 3 bullets in my pistol and none in my shotgun or grenade launcher....so i run run run as fast as i can the velo cant catch me cause i have a electric fence that i just opened and closed down when i got in.... that is the only way of ecscping a vellosorapter. so this game is REAL HARD but worth trying....you should rent that game and try it out....(you will not beat the game when you rent it cause i usually do and it came as a surprise that i could not beat it in a weeks time of playing......) well i hope this review was helpful to you lata
